Aerodynamic analysis was done for a fuselage and wing configuration of a mid-sized aircraft using unsteady 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. Various turbulent models including a transitional SST were used to observe a dynamic stall as well as cruise characteristics. Also, different mesh moving methods were evaluated. Flow hysteresis which causes dynamic stall was investigated through flow field investigations.

An improvement of computational resources with a large scale cluster service is available to the individual person, which has been limited to the original industry and research institute. Therefore, the application of powerful computational resources to the engineering design has been increased fast. In naval and marine industry, the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics, which requires a huge computational effort, to a design of ship and offshore structure has been increased. Floating bodies such as the ship or offshore structure is exposed to ocean waves, current and wind in the ocean, therefore the precise modelling of those environmental disturbances is important in Computational Fluid Dynamics. Especially, ocean waves has to be nonlinear rather than the linear model based on the superposition due to a nonlinear characteristics of Computational Fluid Dynamics. In the present study, a fast reconstruction technique is suggested and it is validated from a series of simulations by using the Computational Fluid Dynamics.
NUFLEX is a general purpose thermo/fluid flow analysis program which has various physical models including spray. In NUFLEX, spray models are composed of breakup and collision models of droplet. However, in case of diesel engine, interaction between wall-film and impingement model considering heat transfer is not coded in NUFLEX. In this study, Lee & Ryou impingement & wall-film model considering heat transfer is applied to NUFLEX. For the verification of this NUFLEX program, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Differences of film thickness and radius between numerical results and experimental data are within 10% error range. The results show that NUFLEX can be used for comprehensive analysis of spray phenomena.
The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's propulsion mechanism of the Weis-Fogh type, in which a airfoil moves reciprocally in a channel, are studied in this paper using the advanced vortex method. The airfoil and the channel are approximated by a finite number of source and vortex panels, and the free vortices are introduced from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart low and the pressure field is calculated from integrating the equation given by the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields. Two-dimensional unsteady viscose flows of this propulsion mechanism are numerically clarified, and the calculated results agree well with the experimental ones.
In the present work, flow analysis has been performed for side channel type double stage ring blower by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. Shear stress transport model is used as turbulent closure. The commercial CFD code CFX 11.0 is used for the calculations. Each of two stage is calculated separately and the second stage inlet flow is same as the first stage outlet flow so that consecutive calculation is possible. Velocity and pressure fields have been analyzed at the mid-plane between blades. The numerical results are validated with experimental data for head coefficients at different flow coefficients.
Flow control butterfly valve(FCBV) is known to have difficulty in controlling flow rate along valve opening due to its high flow rate. In low opening condition, the butterfly valve also has some shortcomings such as noise, vibration and erosion which are mostly caused by cavitation effects. Therefore, the FCBV requires proper remedies to reduce cavitation effects and to improve flow control performance. Numerical analysis is applied to FCBV flow to find effects of design factors such as seat diameter and valve opening rate. Cases with 3 different sizes of seat diameter and various valve opening rate are selected for the numerical analysis. From the analysis results, it is found that the FCBV with small seat diameter shows better pressure loss performance and reduced cavitation effects.
Despite the massive effort which has been given to the analysis of the base flows, one commonly occurring case seems to be overlooked. This is for base (rearward facing surface) which is between a subsonic flow and supersonic flow. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conservation of mass, momentum and energy is achieved by multiple iterations. Despite the iterations, the wake flow field is computed with modest computer requirements.
To alleviate NOx emission, a variety of approaches has been applied. In marine diesels, the application of SCR systems has been considered an effective exhaust aftertreatment method for NOx emission control. Most current SCR systems use a various catalyst for the reaction of ammonia with NOx to form nitrogen and water. In theory, it is possible to achieve 100% NOx if the NH3-to-NOx ratio is 1:1. However, the reaction has a limited non-uniformity of the exhaust gas flow and ammonia concentration distribution. Therefore it is necessary to investigate the optimum flow conditions. In order to achieve uniform flow at monolith front face, we are equipped with a various mixed device. In this paper, it is presented that the mixed devices play an important role improvement of flow patterns and particle distributions of NH3 by numerical simulation.
In the present research, the exclusive analysis system based on the CFD method were suggested to predict the fire-suppression performance of water mist fire-suppression equipments for design applications. The computing scope is ranged from starting pump to fire-suppression equipments, composed of three parts that calculation of flow rate and pressure distribution at each nozzle, examining of spray performance and predicting of fire-suppression performance in the fire space. Application were done to the fire-suppression system for electric power generation plants. The results were analyzed by comparison between numerical results and initial design conditions in terms of thermal and fluid mechanics.
