  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum tagging method of the abalone juvenile, Haliotis discus hannai in indoor culture system from May 2000 to January2001. Tagging methods were shell drilling, copper-wire tagging at the respiratory pore and nut gluing on the shell. The attachment rates of the shell showed high in the 2- and 3 cm bolt-nut tagged groups, about over $89.5\%$, whereas shell drilling groups on the shell were about $18.5\%$. The internal coating rates tagged with bolt-nut were over $96.6\%$, while those tagged with copper wire were less than $17.1\%$. Growths in the all marked and tagged experimental groups comparing with control groups were not significantly different (p>0,05). Survivals in all tagging groups except shell drilling and nut gluing groups in the 5 cm abalone were over $95\%, Accordingly, all juvenile groups were not affected by the tagging methods in terms of the growth and survival on the abalones. Based on these results, the micro bolt-nut tagging was the most effective method in abalone.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for object counting via a conveyor system using machine vision is suggested. Object counting systems using image processing have been applied in a variety of industries for such purposes as measuring floating populations and traffic volume, etc. The methods of object counting mainly used involve template matching and machine learning for detecting and tracking. However, operational time for these methods should be short for detecting objects on quickly moving conveyor belts. To provide this characteristic, this algorithm for image processing is a region-based method. In this experiment, we counted young abalone shells that are similar in shape, size and color. We applied a characteristic conveyor system that operated in one direction. It obtained information on objects in the region of interest by comparing a second frame that continuously changed according to the information obtained with reference to objects in the first region. Objects were counted if the information between the first and second images matched. This count was exact when young shells were evenly spaced without overlap and missed objects were calculated using size information when objects moved without extra space. The proposed algorithm can be applied for various object counting controls on conveyor systems.

• Dietary value of eight species of benthic diatoms, considered as essential live food for larvae and spat of abalone, was assessed on the retarded spat (ca 4.4 m shell length). Survival of the spat, fed on Caloneis schroderi, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Raphoneis sp. was over 93 % and significantly higher than that of others; spat fed on C かwがwi gained the highest daily growth of 112.6 mm, which was two times faster than that fed on Undaria pinnatifida Spat fed on natural or cultured diatoms of C. schroderi grew at rates, that were not significantly different. C. schroderi is recommended to restore the retarded growth of abalone spat.

  • Abalone aquacultural industry has been growing rapidly in a short period of time, however, there has been just a few researches related to the forecast of the supply, demand and price. Even the models developed by these researches have problems of low compatibility and reliability. To resolve these problem, a biological supply model needs to be developed that maintains time difference and linkage among the quantity of juvenile abalone into the plots, quantity of cultivation, quantity of shipment, and at the same time juvenile abalone is transplanted into the plot, matured and shipped by the expected market price. This study focus on the development of the model for determining quantity of the abalone cultivation, which is the core part of the entire abalone demand and supply model. Key factors that affect cultivation quantity were identified and verified the causal relationship among these variables and cultivation quantity. It turned out that the quantity of juvenile abalone transplanted and the relative price(the abalone price of the place of produce divided by the brown seaweed price) have a great influence on the cultivation quantity. Also, the similarity of the variation for the cultivation quantity of the observed value and the forecasted value implies that the model developed in this study has a high compatibility.

  • This study looked into recovery rate and histological changes in the gills of juvenile abalone Haliotis discus hannai by exposure time (3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h) of different water temperatures (15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$) and salinities (30, 25, 20 and 15 psu) to understand reasons for the death of abalone exposed by low salinity water. In each water temperature, abalone spats that were exposed to low salinity water (less than 20 psu) for over 6 hours showed decrease in survival rate during recovery and those were exposed at the salinity of 15 psu for more than 24 hours all died. Histological observation showed expansion or damage of gills of the species which were exposed at less than 20 psu for over 6 hours. In case of abalones exposed at the salinity of 15 psu for over 24 hours, most gill tissues were destroyed. This result was glaringly obvious at a higher water temperature, lower salinity and longer exposure time. Accordingly, suffocation caused by damage of gills considered one of direct causes of the death.

• To find out suitable indoor rearing tank shape and stocking density of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai, young abalones were reared in the square or ellipse shape tanks with various stocking densities and were fed dried sea mustard, Undaria Pinnatifida HARVEY for three years. There were no significant differences between the square rearing tank and the ellipse one in growth rate and survival rate. With regard to vertical design of rearing tanks with three floors, the significant differences were not found among culture floors. However, the growth and survival rates of young abalones from the running water system were significantly higher than those of the abalones from the circulating system (P< 0.05). For the stocking density experiment with 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 individuals of 20 mm young abalone, there was no significant differences in growth and survival rates among these groups. However, in that of 200-400 individuals of 40 mm abalone and 100-300 individuals of 50 mm abalone, the lower stocking density of young abalone showed the higher growth and survival rates. The lower stocking density and the smaller size of young abalones showed the higher daily feeding rate and feed efficiency.
