  • 현재 국내에 체류하는 외국인 수가 150만 명에 이르고 있으며 그 수는 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 이처럼 한국사회가 다문화사회로 진입함에 따라 일선 도서관에서 제공하는 다문화서비스가 중요해졌기 때문에 다문화자료실과 다문화프로그램도 증가하고 있다. 그러나 서비스 제공을 전담하여 전문적으로 제공할 인력은 충분하지 않다. 본 연구에서는 다문화자료실 혹은 다문화프로그램을 운영하는 도서관의 다문화서비스전문사서 현황과 문제점 등을 알아보고 앞으로의 발전 방향을 모색하고자 한다.

A Study on Functions and Present Situation of Subject Specialists for Information Services in Korean College and University Libraries (한국의 대학도서관 정보서비스에 있어서 주제전문사서의 현황과 기능에 관한 조사연구)

  • The objective of the study is to search for a theoretical and practical solution for the question "what is the most effective and Qualitative method of information service for the college and university libraries in Korea." Assuming the maximum service, or total service theory in information services, it needs the subject specialist who has highly qualified in his subject. This research adapted the survey method by questionnaire to the reference/information librarian who worked in college and university libraries, 159 librarians returned the questionnaires. By the analysis of this questionnaires, the following major results were found: 1. There were only 7.6% who could be called as subject specialist in Korean college and university libraries. 2. The subject specialist system is necessary to enhance the Information services in college and university libraries. 3. The major functions of subject specialists are information services In given subject fields; to prepare the bibliographies, guides, reading lists, indexes and abstracts; distribution of information and current awareness services; well balanced collection developments; liaison function between academic departments, students and faculty members; formal and informal lecture on the use of the library and the resources; and the cataloging and classification. 4. The best library and information education system is the graduate level study which is offering the M.L.S. or M.S. of library and information science with the emphasis on the study of subject background. 5. They will establish the faculty status for academic librarian by the development of subject specialist system in college and university libraries in Korea.

An Analysis on the Effectiveness of Book Selection and Circulation After Introducing to Subject Librarian (주제전문사서제의 도입 여부가 도서의 선정과 대출에 미치는 효과 분석)

  • This study analyzed the difference between the two situations to verify the effectiveness of the book selection by the subject professionals in a academic library. In this, some circulation statistics before and after introduction to subject specialists were compared. Moreover, by using Minitab and t-test, ANOVA among other statistical techniques, 186,435 books selected 3 years before September 2005 and after 3 years and 622,213 circulation statistics about those books in 'S' University Library were compared and analysed. The results were as follows: (1) After introduction to the subject librarian, the proportion of books selected by librarians were increased. (2) After introduction to subject reference librarian, the foreign books selected by the faculty and the librarians were statistically significantly increased. (3) By academic field, the academic fields of the books selected by the faculty were significantly increased, but the academic fields of the books selected by the students were significantly decreased.

  • The National Museum of Korea is a nation's representative museum library that provides collection development, organizes, and utilize museum collections. Considering the limited budget, staffing, and users' awareness of the museum libraries in general, the role of the National Museum of Korea is vital. The purpose of this study is to establish the identity and development plan of the National Museum of Korea library as a specialized library. For this purpose, the current states of the National Museum of Korea library, preliminary studies, domestic and overseas case studies, and user & expert interviews were conducted. As a result of the study, the study suggested future directions to secure the professional identity of library, and development plans for collection, service, and human resources by museum library, and also to increase the role of library in museum and to improve users' awareness.

A Study on Improvement of the 'Subjectized Reference Services' in Korean University Libraries (우리나라 대학도서관에서의 주제별 참고봉사 활성화 방안)

  • This study investigated the current state of the reference services of the Korean university libraries and examined ways to improve the system. Especially this study introduced the concept of 'subjectized reference services'and tried to find a way to apply it to the present stage of the Korean university libraries. For that purpose, this study surveyed the reference librarians of the university libraries across the country. The results of this study can be used as the basic data for training 'subject specialist librarians', who can provide specialized services appropriate to the realities of the Korean university libraries.

  • As the use and expectations toward the specialized library have increased, the importance of information services in special fields has become more emphasized than before. In this context, the role and functions of the museum libraries have been more highlighted as the museum has been more frequently used and become popular. In that, this study builds a theoretical background of the information services of national museum libraries, examines their webpages, and analyzes survey results conducted for national museum libraries. By so doing, this study intends to point out issues based upon the analysis and to suggest some recommendations for more effective information services of national museum libraries.

  • With the rapid change of information environment, this study suggests role models and strategies for the university library in Korea based on the subject specialization. By analyzing the current situation and problems of university library, this research presents various directions for the subject specialization. Major research issues are (1) university library's subject specialization directions, models, and factors, (2) subject specialized librarian' s role and education system, (3) basic framework for customized information service and user education, (4) enhancement of subject specialization through subject gateway, (5) academic information sharing system.

An Analysis of Online Readers' Advisory Services Offered by Public Libraries (공공도서관의 온라인 독자상담 서비스에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the rapid advancement of information technology and changes in the reading environment, the readers' advisory services provided by public libraries are facing challenges and opportunities. Recognizing the need for public libraries to respond and propel their services forward, this study analyzed the current status of online readers' advisory services offered by public libraries in Korea and discusses areas that require improvement. To achieve this, the study analyzed the online readers' advisory services in 50 public libraries located in Seoul and six metropolitan cities (Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, Busan, and Ulsan) across seven categories. These categories encompass various aspects, such as announcing reading programs and new books, identifying and addressing reader needs, developing content by librarians, generating content by readers, providing guidance on external reading information, connecting with professional book review databases and online websites, and utilizing social media services. Through this analysis, the study identified areas for improvement to enhance online readers' advisory services in public libraries and ultimately improve reader satisfaction. It suggested enhancing activities such as librarians' book recommendations and reviews for individual readers, reader participation, and interaction.
