  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flexural strengthening effectiveness for the beams combined reinforced with NSM CFRP strips and EBR CFRP strips. To accomplish this objective, a total of nine concrete T beams were tested. From this study, it is found that the flexural stiffness and strength of the beams combined reinforced with NSM and EBR strips were significantly improved compared to the beams strengthened only with NSM CFRP strip. The maximum increase of flexural strength was 347% compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Failure of the beam combined reinforced with NSM and EBR strips (T shape) is initiated by debonding of EBR strips attached on the bottom face, and it was succeeded a part of separatio-n of NSM strips along the longitudinal direction and secondly failure of NSM strips was occurred, eventually sudden explosive failure with the separation of concrete cover in the shear region. This result shows that the NSM and EBR strips have good combination to resist applied load and the combined reinforcement with NSM and EBR strips can redistribute appropriately the total stress subjected concrete beam to the EBR and NSM strips.

  • In this study, to improve the thermal stabilities of the epoxy composite specimens in addition to the enhanced mechanical properties, those were reinforced with carbon nanotubes and micrometer-sized silica particles. To disperse the filler in matrix relatively simple physical process, specimens were fabricated using shear mixing and sonication. Tensile strength, coefficients of thermal expansion and thermal conductivity of the specimens were measured with varied contents of the two fillers. The mechanical and thermal properties were also discussed, and the experimental results of thermal expansion related to the thermal stability of the specimens were compared with those from several micromechanics models. The hybrid composites specimens incorporating 0.6 wt% of carbon nanotubes and 50 wt% of silica particles showed better mechanical properties than the others with increase in tensile strength up to 11%, with respect to those of the baseline specimens. As the silica contents were increased the thermal expansion was reduced down to 36%, and the thermal stability was improved with the decreased thermal deformation. Thermal conductivity of the epoxy composite specimens incorporating 50 wt% of silica particles was enhanced, which demonstrate improvement of 72%. The mechanical and thermal properties of the hybrid composites specimens incorporating the two fillers were improved simultaneously.

  • The waste solution discharged from the LCD manufacturing process contains acids like nitric, acetic and phosphoric acid and metal ions such as Al, Mo and other impurities. It is important to remove impurities less than 1 ppm in phosphoric acid to reuse as an etchant because the residual impurities even in sub-ppm concentration in semiconductor materials play a major role on the electronic properties. In this study, a mixed system of solvent extraction, diffusion dialysis and ion-exchange was developed to commercialize in an efficient system fur recovering the high-purity phosphoric acid. By vacuum evaporation, almost 99% of nitric and acetic acid was removed. And by solvent extraction method with tri-octyl phosphate (TOP) as an extractant, the removal of acetic and nitric acid from the acid mixture was achieved effectively at the ratio A/O=1/3 with 4th stage of extraction stage. About 97.5% of Al and 36.7% of Mo were removed by diffusion dialysis. Essentially almost complete removal of metal ions and purification of high-purity phosphoric acid could be obtained by using ion exchange.

  • Four different composition of autoxidation drying type waterborne coatings (WBC-1, WBC-2, WBC-3, WBC-4) were prepared by the compounding of bentonite (BEN) as a water swellable clay and organometallic soaps as a drier with acrylic binder and coating additives. The solution viscosity, solid content, rheological properties and drying rate of WBCs were investigated. Also the thermal stability, the transmittance and the water-resistance of the films casted by WBCs were measured, and the surface topology of WBC films were investigated by the scanning probe microscopy. As WBC-2, WBC-3 and WBC-4 containing BEN showed the thixotropy with the shear rate, the storage stability of WBC was a excellent. When the driers was mixed in the ratio of Mn/Zn/Ba=1/2/3, the dry ability of WBCs showed maximum as 5.0 sec at 60$\^{C}$. The initial decomposition temperature and the transmittance of WBC films containing BEN increased in range of 32.2∼54.7$\^{C}$ and 5.1∼8.6% than the commercial WBC (MC-21W), respectively. The water resistance of WBC films increased in order of MC-21W

  • The recycling of waste XLPE(crosslinked polyethylene), which is a major source of scraps from high voltage power transmission cables, has been discussed. The waste XLPE scraps were ground into fine powder with various sizes from less than $100{\mu}m$ up to about $1000{\mu}m$ using two types of tailor-made pulverizers. The compounds were prepared in a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder at various conditions such as different compositions, types and powder sizes of waste XLPE, screw configurations and various polymer matrices (LDPE, HDPE, PP, PS). The mechanical and rheological properties and the fracture surface or the compounds were investigated. It was found that an improved impact strength was obtained from the compound with white XLPE powder pulverized from the scraps without outer/inner semi-conductive layers. Generally, the impact strength increases with the content of XLPE but decreases with the size of XLPE. Especially for LDPE, the extrusion was possible up to 80 wt% loading of XLPE. Also, the impact strength increases with the number of kneading disc blocks in the given screw configurations. The melt viscosity of the compounds increases with increasing XLPE loading. However, the higher shear thinning behavior of the compounds at common shear rates implies proper processibility of the compounds. In addition, the impact strength for other polymer matrices used increases with XLPE and it is noticeable that the impact strength of PS/XLPE (80/20 wt%) compound was improved twice that of pure PS.

It is important to removal of impurities to tess than 1ppm in phosphoric acid to reuse as an etchant because the residual impurities even in sub-ppm concentration in semiconductor materials play a major role on the electronic properties. About 97% and 76% removal of Al and Mo were achieved by diffusion dialysis. Essentially complete less than 1ppm removal of Al, Mo by using ion exchange ion resin and purification of the phosphoric acid was obtain.

  • A 90-d trial was conducted to determine the influence of additives such as pegmatite (Peg), precious stone (PS), grape pomace extracts (GPEx) and complexes of these additives (Peg + GPEx and PS + GPEx) via evaluation of meat quality including sensory properties in 90 d old finishing pigs. There were no significant differences in the approximate composition and physiochemical characteristics, including meat color, among the treated groups. However, the Peg treated group was found to have a higher water holding capacity than the other groups. The shear-force was evaluated as an indicator of hardness and found to be lower in the Peg and GPEx treated groups, and this tendency was greater when the complex of Peg and GPEx was supplied. No significant differences were observed among groups following analysis of the free amino acid composition and fatty acid (FA) composition. Sensory evaluation of the boiled loins showed significantly (p<0.05) better results from pigs fed diets containing Peg and GPEx complex. These results suggest that Peg may improve the water holding capacity and tenderness. In addition, supplementation with a complex of Peg and GPEx may improve tenderness.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe the change of viscoelastic properties of dental resin cements during polymerization. Materials and methods: Six commercially available resin cement materials (Clearfil SA luting, Panavia F 2.0, Zirconite, Variolink N, RelyX Unicem clicker, RelyX U200) were investigated in this study. A dynamic oscillation-time sweep test was performed with AR1500 stress controlled rheometer at $32^{\circ}C$. The changes in shear storage modulus (G'), shear loss modulus (G"), loss tangent (tan ${\delta}$) and displacement were measured for twenty minutes and repeated three times for each material. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (${\alpha}$=0.05). Results: After mixing, all materials demonstrated an increase in G' with time, reaching the plateau in the end. RelyX U200 demonstrated the highest G' value, while RelyX Unicem (clicker type) and Variolink N demonstrated the lowest G' value at the end of experimental time. Tan ${\delta}$was maintained at some level and reached the zero at the starting point where G' began to increase. The tan ${\delta}$and displacement of the tested materials showed similar pattern in the graph within change of time. The displacement of all 6 materials approached to zero within 6 minutes. Conclusion: Compared to other resin cements used in this study, RelyX U200 maintained plastic property for a longer period of time. When it completed the curing process, RelyX U200 had the highest stiffness. It is convenient for clinicians to cement multiple units of dental prostheses simultaneously.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the functional effects of adding oyster shell powder on the quality properties and storage stability of emulsion-type pork sausages to substitute phosphates as a curing agent. Seven treatments were prepared: T1 (Control), T2 (0.3% STPP), T3 (1.5% NaCl), T4 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein), T5 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein + 0.15% oyster shell powder), T6 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein + 0.3% oyster shell powder), and T7 (1.5% NaCl + 0.5% whey protein + 0.5% oyster shell powder). Significant differences were observed for ash in the proximal analysis. Adding 0.5% oyster shell powder significantly increased pH values when compared to the other treatments. Pork sausages with 0.3% oyster shell powder had significantly improved water holding capacity and cooking loss. Adding oyster shell powder (0.15, 0.3, and 0.5%) resulted in significantly higher hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, and chewiness values than those in the other treatments. No significant differences were observed among treatments during 14 d of cold storage at $4^{\circ}C$.

  • Strain improvement and bioprocess development were undertaken to enhance hyaluronic acid(HA) production by Streptococcus zooepidemicus cells. Using a high-yielding mutant strain, statistical medium optimization was carried out in shake flask cultures, resulting in 52% increase in HA production (5.38 g/l) at the optimal medium composition relative to the parallel control cultures. For sufficient supply of dissolved oxygen (DO), which turned out to be crucial for enhanced production of HA, agitation system and speed were intensively investigated in 5 L bioreactor cultures. Increase in oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) through increment of agitation speed (rpm) and 35% expansion of diameter of the newly-designed impellers showed significantly positive effects on HA production. By installing an expanded Rushton-turbine impeller for efficient break-down of sparged air, and an extended marine impeller above the Rushton-turbine impeller for efficient mixing of the air-born viscous fermentation broth, maximum amount of HA (9.79 g/l) was obtained at 450 rpm, 1.8 times higher level than that of the corresponding flask culture. Subsequently, the possibility of bioprocess scale-up to a 50 L bioreactor was investigated. Despite almost identical maximum HA production (9.11 vs 9.25 g/l), the average HA volumetric productivity (rp) of the 50 L culture turned out only 74% compared to the corresponding 5 L culture during the exponential phase, possibly caused by shear damages imposed on the producing cells at the high stirring in the 50 L culture. The scale-up process could be successfully achieved if a scale-up criterion of constant oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) is applied to the 50 L pilot-scale bioreactor system.
