  • Effects of the electric conductivity of particles were studied for the aggregation process of charged particles with a Brownian dynamic simulation in the free molecular regime. A periodic boundary condition was used for the calculation of the aggregation process in each cell with 500 primary particles of 16 nm in diameter. We considered two extreme cases, a perfect conductor and a perfect nonconductor. The electrostatic force on a particle in the simulation cell was considered as a sum of electrostatic forces from other particles in the original cell and its replicate cells. We assumed that aggregates were only charged with pre-charged primary particles. The morphological shape of aggregates was described in terms of the fractal dimension. The fractal dimension for the uncharged aggregate was D$_{f}$= 1.761. However, the fractal dimension decreased from 1.694 to 1.360 for the case of the perfect conductor, and from 1.610 to 1.476 for the case of the perfect nonconductor, with the increase of the average number of charges on the primary particle from 0.2 to 0.3. These values were smaller than that of the centered charge case.e.

  • In genral, the water process facilities include the purification plant, the waste water plant and the process of this purification plant is consisted of the intake, coagulation, settling, filtration, disinfection. The coagulation is very important in filtration processing plant and is very related to process of turbidity. The coagulation to the turbidity is, however, not yet to be clarified and the amount of coagulant can not be easily calculated. Moreover the coagulant dosing amount has to be decided adaptively according to the qualities of the raw water. So, the automation of chemicals dosing process and the supervisory system were needed to improve the performance of facilities. In this paper, a neural network is employed to model the coagulation to the turbidity of the treated water and the historical jar-test data are used to train the neural network. And also, an automation system to support the coagulant dosing process using the neural network was implemented and was shown by the field test. This automation system for the operator support system was constructed the environment to supervise the state an management of facilities for the maintenance.

  • This study is to develop the pretreatment for the excess and digested sludge by elector-coagulation and dewatering. Electrocoagulation is applied to excess and digested sludge before transferring to the pistion type for dewatering. Piston type filter press as a laboratory scale plant was used to estimate the dewaterability. MMD of excess sludge was increased from initial diameter of particles ($34.16{\mu}m$) to the 87%($64.01{\mu}m$) after electrocoagulation. Al electrode is more effective than Fe electrode for the dewaterabiltity of excess sludge Electrodewatering after electrocoagulation as pretreatment makes the water content of sludge cake 50~60 wt%.

  • In case that the seepage of contaminants into the subsurface has been generated from the waste impoundment by demage of geomembrane liner, it is necessary to repair the leaks of geomembrane liner for minimizing the environmental contamination by electrophoresis method. However, when electrophoresis method is applied to leachate electrolyte system, the phenomenon of clay particles flocculation would be accelerated by the interaction between clay particles and specific chemicals in leachate. In addition, the gravitational settling behaviour would be induced superior to the electrophoretic migration behaviour. Eventually, the limitations of field applicability for using the electrophoresis method are appeared. Therefore, 1-D enhanced electrophoresis method is conducted to prevent the clay flocculation and accelerate the migration of clay particles separately. After the 1-D enhanced electrophoresis experiment, we can get the results that the deflocculation effect of clay particles is increased by electrical repulsion of polymer, which adsorbed in clay particle edge, in case of using PAA dispersing agent.

  • This study was investigated to evaluate the effect of electric fields application for the reduction of membrane fouling, the inactivation of microorganisms and the enhancement of particle coagulation in microfiltration/coagulation. Cumulative permeate in the case with electric field treatment showed high value compared to the case without electric field. Particularly, the increase of HRT (Hydraulic retention time) showed the increase of cumulative permeate as well as the decrease of total resistance. By electric field treatment, the amount of small particle size less than 100 ${\mu}m$ is increased and the survival fraction is reduced by the increase of electric field intensity. This may be attributed to the cleavage of particle or cytological destruction resulting from the inactivation of microorganism. Coagulant dosage of PAC compared with no electric field application could also be saved about 75% for the 95% of turbidity removal at 10 kV/cm.

  • Due to the enforcement of effluent water regulation the advance sewage treatment system is needed to retrofit and remodelling. In this case the most important issue is the effluent concentrations of TP and there are a lot of system to reduce its concentration. But biological treatment processes have many restrictions to enhance the removal efficiency of TP. In this study the efficient ECO operating condition to improve and retrofit biological sewage wastewater treatment system is as follow; 1) The treatment efficiency of BOD, TN and TP at the current density of $15mA/cm^2$ was higher than the treatment efficiency at $5mA/cm^2$ in the electrodes arranged with Al-SUS(Stainless Steel) regardless of the reaction time, The TP concentration was 0.1 mg/L or less. Especially, when the reaction time was maintained at 10 min, the TP concentration was 0.06 mg/L or less irrespective of the current density. 2) The change of TP concentration is not influenced by the change of current density and rather the concentration of treated water changes according to the reaction time. In the case of electro coagulation reaction, a few seconds to several minutes are required. However, the reaction time of electro coagulation and oxidation was studied to be more than 10 minutes. 3) As a result, it has been studied that the economical current density of the electro coagulation oxidation process for TN and TP treatment of domestic wastewater is $15mA/cm^2$ or less and the reaction time is 10 minutes.

  • A numerical study has been carried out on the evolution of the particle size distribution for unipolar charged particles that experience coagulation in an alternating electric field. The collision frequency function of charged particles was analytically derived. The log-normal size distribution function is utilized for representing a poly-disperse size distribution and the moments of the particle size distribution are used to solve the general dynamic equation considering only AC electric force effect. The results are compared with the effects of brownian coagulation.
