This paper presents vibration control performance of a passenger vehicle installed with olectro-rheological(ER) engine mounts. As a first step, a mixed-mode ER engine mount is modeled and manufactured. After verifying the controllability of the dynamic stiffness by the intensity of the electric field, ER engine mounts are incorporated with a full-car model. The governing equation of motion is then formulated by considering engine excitation force. A skyhook controller to attenuate vibration motions is designed. The controller is implemented through hardware-in-the-loop simulation and control responses are presented in the both frequency and time domains.
This paper presents performance investigation of a continuously variable ER(Electro-Rheological) damper for passenger vehicles. A dynamic model of the damper is formulated by incorporating electric field-dependent Bingham properties of the ER fluid. The Bingham properties are experimentally obtained through Couette type electroviscous measurement with respect to two different particle concentrations. The governing equation of the hydraulic model treating three components of fluid resistances;electrode duct flow, check valve flow and piston gap flow, is achieved via the bond graph method. A prototype ER damper is then designed and manufactured on the basis of parameter analysis. The damping forces of the system are experimentally evaluated by changing the intensity of the electric field, the particle concentration and the electrode gap.
This paper presents an active position control of a moving table utilizing ER(electro-rheological) brake and ER clutch. A transformer oil-based ER fluid is composed and its Bingham properties are evaluated with respect to electric fields. The dynamics of the actuators : ER brake and ER clutch, are identified through experiments, and subsequently the governing equation of motion of the moving table system is formulated from the governing equation, a sliding mode controller is designed to achieve an accurate position control. Both simulation and experimental results and presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.
This paper presents a novel type of a semiactive damper featuring an electro-rheological(ER) fluid. Unlike conventional cylindrical ER damper, the proposed one has controllable orifices by the intensity of electric fields (We call it orifice type). The dynamic model of the orifice type ER damper is formulated by incorporating field-dependent Bingham properties of an arabic gum-based ER fluid. Design parameters such as electrode gap are subsequently determined on the basis of the dynamic model. After manufacturing the orifice type ER damper, field-dependent damping forces and damping force controllability are empirically evaluated. In the evaluation procedure, conventional cylindrical ER damper is adopted and its performance characteristics are compared with those of the orifice type ER damper. In addition, the proposed one is installed with a full-car model and its vibration control performance associated with a skyhook controller is investigated.
The purpose of this study is to visualize the characteristics of ER fluids as preceding step of developing 3 port ER valves. ER fluids are made with silicone oil and 3 weight fraction starch having hydrous particles. The flow visualization of ER fluids flow is obtained by CCD camera with changing the strength of electric field to ER fluids flow. As the strength of the electric field increases, more clusters in flow are made and these clusters are though to be the reasons of the load flow rate being increased and the outlet flow rate being decreased. The ER Valves and load and outlet flow rate check method are considered to be applied to the fluid power control system.
This paper concerns the design and application of an electro-rheological (ER) fluid damper to semiactive vibration control of rotor systems. In particular, the system under present study is constructed structurally flexible in order to explore multiple critical speeds within operation range. To this end, the dynamic models of the proposed ER damper and its associated amplifier are derived in the first place. Subsequently entire rotor system model is assembled along with the dynamics of the end effector based on a finite element method enabling prediction as to its free and forced vibration characteristics. Next, an artificial intelligent (AI) feedback controller is synthesized taking into account the peculiarity of Coulomb damping effect in rotor applications. Finally, computational and experimental results are presented including model validation and control performances. In practice, such an AI control proved effective whether the spin speed was either before or after critical speeds.
This paper presents performance characteristics of a semi-active suspension featuring continuously variable ER (electro-rheological) dampers. These are evaluated through the field test of a passeng er car. Four ER dampers (two for front and two for rear part) are manufactured and their field-dependent damping properties are experimentally investigated. The damping force responses to step input fields are also identified by employing small size of high voltage amplifiers which are made adaptable to the field test. A skyhook controller considering the vertical, pitch and roll motions is formulated and incorporated with a car to be tested. The field test is then undertaken in order to evaluate both comfortability and steering stability showing bump, dive and squat responses.
This paper presents control and response characteristics of a continuously variable ER(electrorheological) damper for small-sized vehicles. The ER damper is devised and its governing equation of motion is derived from the bond graph model. The field-dependent yield shear stresses are distilled from experimental investigation on the Bingham property of the ER fluid. The distilled data are incorporated into the governing system model and, on the basis of this model, an appropriate size of the ER damper is manufactured. After evaluating the field-dependent damping performance of the proposed ER damper, the skyhook control algorithm is formulated to achieve desired level of the damping force. The controller is then experimentally implemented and control characteristics of the ER damper are presented in order to demonstrate superior controllability of the damping force. In addition, response characteristics of the damping force with respect to the electric field with fast on-off frequency are provided to show the feasibility of practical application.
This paper presents control response of a semi-active electro-rheological(ER) suspension. After showing dynamic characteristics of the ER damper, 1/4 car model is formulated by incorporating with the time constant of the damping force. $H_{\infty}$ controller compensating mass and time constant uncertainties is then designed in order to suppress vibration level of the suspension. The control responses such as vertical acceleration are presented.
This paper presents a proof-of-concept investigation on an active tension control using an ER (electro-rheological) brake actuator. Firstly, an ERF (electro-rheological fluid) which has an inherent reversible feature from Newtonian fluid to Bingham fluid upon applying an electric field is composed, and its property is tested to obtain intrinsic parameters of the Bingham model. An appropriate size of the ER brake is manufactured on the basis of the Bingham model, and dynamic characteristics of the brake are experimentally identified. After formulating a governing equation of motion of the tension control system, a sliding mode controller is designed to achieve a certain desired level of tension. Both simulation and experimental works are undertaken in order to demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed active tension control method.
