  • EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) dust is classified as special wastes containing heavy metal contaminants may cause to damage an environment such as underground water contamination if they were not treated properly. For reutilizing the EAF dust, the porous body was made from EAF dust/clay composition system, and analyzed pore characteristics. It was found that a light-aggregate body was made up two different microstructures. One was non-black and dense microstructure which located near surface, and the other was black and porous microstructure (black coring) which located inner part. For systematizing the relationship of the black-coring area and the bloating degree, we defined the Ic(core index) and Is(shell index). It was found that the optimal bloating conditions of artificial light-weight aggregate were more than 0.5 of Ic and 0.4 of Is.

  • Generally, the residues of EAF's dusts treated by reduction process at high temperature are disposed. If the residues can be recycled as iron sources of EAF by upgrading their iron contents, it can be expected to reduce the amounts of disposed wastes and the environmental impacts. Reduction of EAF's dusts mixed with millscale was carried out in rotary hearth furnace to upgrade iron contents of reduction residues. Dusts should be reduced rapidly to protect from reoxidation of reduced iron residue which can be reoxidized at high temperature. In our experimental conditions, optimum reduction time was about 40min. and iron contents of the residues were increased with increasing mixing ratio of millscale and upgrade to 85% at 50%wt mixing ratio. Zinc and lead contents in residues were about 3% and 0.5% respectively. The residues reduced rapidly must be recycled in EAF because heavy metal elements in the residues can be extracted easily and contaminate air and water.

  • Most electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) treatment processes to recover zinc from EAFD employ carbon as a reducing agent for the zinc oxide in the EAFD. In the present work, the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon in the present of iron oxide was kinetically studied. The experiments were carried out at temperatures between 1173 K and 1373 K under nitrogen atmosphere using a weight-loss technique. From the experimental results, it was concluded that adding the proper amount of iron oxide to the reactant accelerates the reaction rate of zinc oxide with carbon. This is because iron oxide in the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon promotes the carbon gasification reaction. The spherical shrinking core model for a surface chemical reaction control was found to be useful in describing kinetics of the reaction over the entire temperature range. The reaction has an activation energy of 53 kcal/mol (224 kJ/mol) for ZnO-C reaction system, an activation energy of 42 kcal/mol (175 kJ/mol) for $ZnO-Fe_{2}O_{3}-C$ reaction system, and an activation energy of 44 kcal/mol (184 kJ/mol) for ZnO-mill scale-C reaction system.

  • Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) contains compounds, such as oxides and chlorides, including large quantities of Zn, Pb and Fe. An efficient and stable method for the extraction of metal elements from EAFD is the Rotary Kiln Process. This method is used to recover Zn in the form of crude ZnO (approximately 60%) via the addition of a reducing agent (coke, anthracite) and limestone (for basicity control) to EAFD. This process is commonly used in industry as well as in research and development. Currently, this method is used in many Korean commercial plants, producing approximately 150,000 tons of Crude ZnO per year. The majority of Zn is found in crude ZnO (approximately 76%). In addition components such as Pb, Cd, Sn, In, Fe, Cl, and F are present as oxides, chlorides, and alkaline compounds. This elements have an adverse effect on the zinc smelting process. Therefore, a refining process that eliminates these impurities is essential. In this study, we developed a process technology that efficiently separates Zn and Pb from byproducts (mainly chlorides). A bag filter was used to collect Zn and Pb generated during the dry purification process of crude ZnO. Pure components were recovered as metals or metal carbonate.

  • EAFD (Electric Arc Furnace Dust) is considered as pernicious pollutant, assigned hazardous waste. Since this dust is a by-product of industry, it contains valuable metals such as Fe, Zn, Ni, Cu which can be turned into resources by recycling process. In this study, hydrometallurgical process was applied to recover Zn from Electric Arc Furnace Dusts. The result showed 95% Zn recovery at 3M $H_2SO_4$, Solids/Liquid ratio 1:2 and aeration of 1.8L/min for 2hr. However there was 80% Zn recovery at lower $H_2SO_4$ concentration apply for pilot scale plant.

  • We had investigated combustion pro야$\pi$ies of rice bran dusts. Decomposition of rice bran d dusts with temperature were investigated using DSC and the weight loss according to t temperature using TGA in order to find the thermal hazard of rice bran dusts, and the p properties of dust explosion in variation of their dust with the same particle size. Using H Hartman's dust explosion apparatus which estimate dust explosion by electric ignition after m making dust disperse by compressed air, dust explosion experiments have been conducted by v varying concen$\sigma$ation and size of rice br뻐 dust. According to the results for thermodynamic stability of rice bran dust, there are little change of initiation temperature of heat generation 때d heating value for used particle size. But i initiation temperature of heat generation decreased with high heating rate whereas d decomposition heat increased with particle size. Also, the explosion pressure was increased as t the ignition energy increased and average maximum explosion pressure was 13.5 kgv'cnt for 5 BJ/60 mesh and 1.5 뼈Ie미 dust concentration.
