전극물질에 따른 단전극 대기압 제트 플라즈마 스트리머 동역학 연구

  • 대기압 제트 플라즈마를 저주파(수-수십 kHz) 전압에서 구동 시, 일반적으로 '스트리머(streamer)'혹은 '플라즈마 총알(plasma bullet)'로 불리는 현상이 특정 운전조건에서 관찰된다. 본 연구에서는 동일 구조의 Ta, Ti, stainless steel, brass, Cu, Ni 전극을 이용하여 전극물질에 따른 대기압 제트 플라즈마의 특성 변화를 분석하였다. 각각의 물질은 서로 다른 이차전자방출계수, 일함수, 전기전도도 등 고유한 성질이 다르기 때문에 이들 전극을 이용하여 발생시킨 제트 플라즈마 역시 다른 특성을 갖는다. Acton SpectroPro750 분광기를 이용하여 얻은 플라즈마 방출광스펙트럼으로부터 구한 전자 여기온도(Texc=680~720 K)와 OH의 분자 회전온도(Trot=350~380K)는 물질에 따라 큰 변화를 보이지 않았으나, 발생된 스트리머 거동에서 큰 차이를 확인하였다. ICCD 카메라를 이용한 시간 분해된 이미지에서 전극물질에 따른 첫 번째 스트리머의 발생시간 및 스트리머 속력, 두 번째 스트리머의 분리시간이 모두 다른 것을 확인하였다. 제일 차이가 심하게 나타나는 Ti과 Cu의 경우 첫 스트리머의 발생시간 차이는 약 $1{\mu}s$이며, 평균속력 및 순간속력이 약 2 km/s 차이가 났다. 이 결과를 통해 물질의 이차전자방출계수 및 일함수가 대기압 제트 플라즈마에서 스트리머 발생에 영향을 주는 것을 알았고, 다른 전극물질을 사용한 제트 플라즈마의 특성이 다름에 따라 여러 응용에서의 결과에도 영향을 미칠 것이라생각한다.

Removal of Ammonia in Aquaculture Wastewater by Electrolysis with Switching Poles (극전환 전해 반응기를 이용한 양식 폐수 내 암모니아 제거)

  • We have introduced switching poles in the conventional electrolysis for the removal of ammonia in aquaculture wastewater to prevent the fouling on the electrode surface by the deposition of insoluble metallic compounds. We have also tried to locate the optimal period of switching poles considering the effect of the current loss during switching poles on the free chlorine generation. First, we have observed the decrease of free chlorine generation with the decrease of the period of switching poles due to the expected current loss, and this would lead to the decrease of ammonia removal efficiency. Meanwhile, the measurement of calcium and magnesium concentration in wastewater vs. the period of switching poles have demonstrated that a properly low level of fouling on the electrode surface could be retained with a period of switching poles of less than 60 sec by the decomposition of metallic compounds during switching poles. In a summary, we have optimized the period of switching poles to gain a high level of free chlorine generation and a high level of fouling prevention on the electrode at the same time.

Neutral Electrolyzed Water for Prevention of Dental Caries (기존 구강청결제를 대체할 수 있는 치아우식 예방을 위한 전기분해수)

  • Gargle solution has typically been used for the prevention of oral infectious disease such as dental caries and periodontitis. However, the use of most gargle solutions is controversial in application for children because some gargle solutions have harmful side effects. Electrolyzed water is generated by passed an electric current and has antimicrobial activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the efficacy of electrolyzed water in various conditions for eliminating cariogenic bacteria. Electrolyzed water was generated by a platinum electrode in the presence of sodium chloride at various concentrations. Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus were cultivated into a brain heart infusion broth. After harvesting planktonic bacteria, the pellets were treated with the electrolyzed water and commercial gargle solutions and plated on a mitis-salivarius agar plate. Also, the anti-biofilm activity of the electrolyzed water and commercial gargle solutions was investigated after biofilm formation of S. mutans and S. sobrinus. The bacteria in the biofilm were plated onto a mitis-salivarius agar plate. The plates were incubated, and the colony forming unit was measured. The electrolyzed water containing sodium chloride showed significant antibacterial activity against S. mutans and S. sobrinus as well as some gargle solutions. Furthermore, the electrolyzed water had more disruptive effect on the biofilm of S. mutans and S. sobrinus and killed more bacteria in the biofilm than commercial gargle solutions. The results demonstrate that electrolyzed water may be a useful gargle solution for prevention of dental caries.

Removing High Concentration Organic Matters by Using Electrolysis (전기분해에 의한 고농도 유기물질 제거 특성)

  • Organic removal from synthetic wastewater by electrochemical methods was investigated with various operating parameters, such as current density, retention time, electrode gap and $Cl^-/COD_{Cr}$ ratio. In electrolysis, dioxide iridium coated titanium ($IrO_2/Ti$) and stainless steel plate were used for anode and cathode respectively. The $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiencies between plate type anode and net type anode were about same effect, but electrolytic power using net type anode is low than plate type anode. The $Cl^-/COD_{Cr}$ ratio was about $1.3kgCl^-/kgCOD_{Cr}$ when organic removal obtained 70 %, $Cl^-/COD_{Cr}$ ratio needs $2.2kgCl^-/kgCOD_{Cr}$ so as to organic completely remove. The removal efficiency of organics increased with current density, retention time and $Cl^-/COD_{Cr}$ ratio, but decreased with increasing electrode gap. The relationship of operating conditions and $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiencies are as follows. $$COD_{Cr}(%)=80.0360(Current\;density)^{0.4451}{\times}(HRT)^{0.8102}{\times}(Gap)^{-0.4915}{\times}(Cl^-/COD_{Cr})^{0.5805}$$ There existed a competition between the removals for $COD_{Cr}$ and ammonium during electrolysis, the removal of ammonium was shown to be dominant and $COD_{Cr}$ removal was low. But $COD_{Cr}$ removal was raised as addition of alkalinity.

The Effect of Electrode Spacing and Size on the Performance of Soil Microbial Fuel Cells (SMFC) (전극간 거리와 크기가 토양미생물연료전지의 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • Soil microbial fuel cells (SMFC) have gained a great attention as an eco-friendly technology that can simultaneously generate electricity and treat organic pollutants from the contaminated soil. We evaluated the effect of electrode spacing and size on the performance of SMFC treating soil contaminated with organic pollutants. Maximum power density decreased with increase in electrode distance or decrease in electrode size, likely due to higher internal resistance. The maximum voltage and power density decreased from 326 mV and $19.5mW/m^2$ with 4 cm of electrode distance to 222 mV and $5.9mW/m^2$ with 9 cm of electrode distance. In case of electrode size test, the maximum voltage and power density generated was 291 mV, $0.34mW/m^3$ when both of anode and cathode area were $64cm^2$ with 4 cm of electrode distance. The maximum voltage decreased by 19~29% when the anode area decreased to $16cm^2$ while only 3~12% of voltage decreased with cathode area decrease. The maximum power density decreased by 49~68% with decreasing anode size, and by 29~47% with decreasing cathode size. These results showed that the anode area had more significant effects than the cathode area on the power generation of SMFC which has a high internal resistance due to a coexistence of soil and wastewater in the reactor.

Electrode properties of various carbon anodes containing different sizes and distributions of pores (다양한 기공 크기 및 분포를 갖는 양극 탄소의 전극 특성)

  • Differences in electrode properties and in fluorine electrolysis behaviors of various carbon anodes, which were the YBD-like grade carbon, the YBD grade carbon and the P2X grade carbon, containing different pore sizes and distributions were investigated. The evaluations were performed by measuring their mechanical properties, cyclic voltammograms and chronoamperometries in 0.5 M $K_2SO_4$ solution with 1 mM $[[Fe(CN)_6]^\;{3-}/Fe(CN)_6$] $^{4-}$ redox couple and electrochemical behaviours of fluorine electrolysis in molten KF . 2HF electrolyte at $85^{\circ}C$. It was found that the P2X grade carbon anode showed better electrode properties in the cyclic voltammogram and chronoamperometry than the other carbon anodes while the YBD-like grade carbon anode which contained the pore size of 200~300$\mu$m showed superior electrode properties for fluorine electrolysis to the others. These differences in the electrode properties of various carbon anodes seemed to be owing to different sizes and distributions of pores on their surfaces.

  • Five kinds of modified electrode arrays were proposed to overcome the weak points of the commonly used arrays using dipole and/or pole in two-dimensional resistivity surveys. The modified pole-pole array was suggested to overcome the inefficiency caused by distant earthing in pole-pole array. Four kinds of modified arrays using dipole were designed to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the conventional dipole-dipole and pole-dipole arrays through boosting up the measured potential difference. In the numerical experiments using the two-dimensional modeling and inversion, the effects of the ambient electrical noise and the resolving power were examined and the results showed the validity of the modified arrays proposed in this study.

A Study of Photoelectrolysis of Water by Use of Titanium Oxide Films (산화티타늄 피막의 광 전기분해 특성에 관한 연구)

  • For the development of semiconducting photoelectrode to be more stable and efficient in the process of photoelectrolysis of the water, pure titanium rods were oxidized by anodic oxidation, furance oxidation and flame oxidation and used as electrodes. The Indium islands were formed by electrodeposition of "In" thin film on $TiO_2$ and Ti by electrodeposition. Also $A1_2O_3$ and NiO islands were coated on Ti by the electron-beam evaporation technique. The maximum photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency(${\eta}$) was 0.98% for flame oxidized electrode($1200^{\circ}C$ for 2min in air). Anodically oxidized electrodes have photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency of 0.14%. Furnace oxidized electrode($800^{\circ}C$ for 10min in air) has 0.57% of photoelectrochemical efficiency and shows a band-gap energy of about 2.9eV. The $In_2O_3$ coated $TiO_2$ exhibits 0.8% of photoelectrochemical efficiency but much higher value of ${\eta}$ was obtained with the Increase of applied blas voltage. However, $Al_2O_3$ or NiO coated $TiO_2$ shows much low value of ${\eta}$. The efficiency was dependent on the presence of the metallic interstitial compound $TiO_{0+x}$(x<0.33) at the metal-semiconductor interface and the thickness of the suboxide layer and the external rutile scale.

전기 펜톤-유사 반응을 이용한 염료의 색 제거

  • NaCl 첨가는 전력 소모를 줄여주는 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났고, 같은 전력량에서 NaCl의 첨가량이 증가하여 전류가 증가할수록 초기 반응속도가 증가하는 것으로 나타났으나 30분의 반응시간 후 최종 RhB 농도는 유사한 것으로 나타났다. 철 전극만을 이용하여 전기분해 반응만을 이용하는 경우보다 $H_2O_2$를 첨가하여 전기분해 + 전기 펜톤-유사 반응을 이용하는 것이 RhB의 탈색에 유리하다고 사료되었다. pH가 산성영역으로 갈수록 초기반응속도와 반응종결시간이 빨라졌으며, 97%의상의 제거율을 얻기 위해서는 pH 6이하에서, 5분 이내의 반응종결을 위해서는 pH 5이하에서 운전하여야 한다고 사료되었다.

  • Kinetics of electrochemical polymerization of aniline on a tungsten electrode in acidic aqueous solution was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and kinetic measurements of anodic oxidation. Aniline molecule appeared to be intially oxidized via two-electron transfer to produce oxidized deprotonated aniline ion, which subsequently undergoes nucleophilic attack to the parent aniline and results in head to tail coupling to yield a dimerized species. But, being contrary to the case of Pt electrode, the propagation of polymerization occured through attack of the monomer by the oxidized aniline monomer to polymer. The growth rate of polyaniline was slow in comparison with the growth on Pt electrode. The degradation products were confirmed to be not p-benzoquinone(BQ) but p-phenylenediamine(p-PDA) by spectrophotometry, which agrees with the fact that oxidation of p-PDA was not observed below 1.0 V.
