  • In this study, advanced unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and particle filter (PF) implementations are introduced and applied to perform system identification (SI) for sudden structural damage induced by seismic loading. These two methods are then compared to validate their applicability to SI tasks. For this validation, the Bouc- Wen model is used to simulate the nonlinear shear-building response, and an adaptive rule (i.e., an adaptive tracking method) is applied to the two filter methods to improve their tracking performance during sudden changes in system properties. When the original UKF and PF are applied to an earthquake scenario, both methods fail to estimate the damage initiation time and post-damage parameter values. After applying the adaptive tracking method, it is found for both methods that although the occurrence time is identified, the estimation of the damage state is still not accurate. To improve the accuracy, an adjusted adaptive tracking method is applied, and the two methods then derive accurate estimates. Finally, when considering the computation time, UKF is promoted as a better choice for practical applications, provided that a proper adaptive tracking method is implemented.

  • To neutralize fast Anti-Tank Guided Missiles(ATGMs) or Anti-Tank Rockets(ATRs) projected at short ranges, the trajectories and times that the threats arrive at hard-kill systems should be predicted precisely. The trajectories of ATGMs or ATRs are almost stationary but the velocity and acceleration are very changeable in the terminal stage, so that it is needed to predict the characteristics of ATGMs and ATRs for filtering. In this paper the Fuzzy Rule based Adaptive Kalman Filter(FRAKF) is proposed to estimate the position, velocity and acceleration of the threats with accuracy and the performance of it is compared with the existing tracking filter considering the maneuvering characteristics of threats.

  • This paper presents design concepts of a reconfigurable mobile robot for both of indoor and outdoor applications. A linkage mechanism and wheel-in-motors give the proposed mobile robot various driving modes in maneuver and good adaptability to irregular surface. Since the mobile robot receives multiple sensor signals from odometers and an orientation sensor, states related to the position and the orientation of the mobile robot are optimally estimated by an extended Kalman filter. Simulations and experimental results show that the performance of dead reckoning on estimating the pose of a mobile robot can be improved remarkably by the optimal state observer.

  • Vehicle dynamic states used in various advanced driving safety systems are influenced by road geometry. Among the road geometry information, the vehicle pitch angle influenced by road slope and acceleration-deceleration is essential parameter used in pose estimation including the navigation system, advanced adaptive cruise control and others on sag road. Although the road slope data is essential parameter, the method measuring the parameter is not commercialized. The digital map including the road geometry data and high-precision DGPS system such as DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) based RTK(Real-Time Kinematics) are used unusually. In this paper, low-cost cascade extended Kalman filter(CEKF) based road slope estimation method is proposed. It use cascade two EKFs. The EKFs use several measured vehicle states such as yaw rate, longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration and wheel speed of the rear tires and 3 D.O.F(Degree Of Freedom) vehicle dynamics model. The performance of proposed estimation algorithm is evaluated by simulation based on Carsim dynamics tool and T-car based experiment.

  • Object tracking is being studied with various techniques such as Kalman filter and Luenberger tracker. Even in situations, such as the one in which the system model is not well specified, to which existing signal processing techniques are not successfully applicable, it is possible to design artificial neural networks to track objects. In this paper, we propose an artificial neural network, which we call 'maximum-likelihood weighted-average neural network', to continuously track unpredictably moving objects. This neural network does not directly estimate the locations of an object but obtains location estimates by making weighted average combining various results of maximum likelihood tracking with different data lengths. We compare the performance of the proposed system with those of Kalman filter and maximum likelihood object trackers and show that the proposed scheme exhibits excellent performance well adapting the change of object moving characteristics.

  • Object tracking is a field of signal processing that sequentially tracks the location of an object based on the previous-time location estimations and the present-time observation data. In this paper, we propose an adaptive scaling neural network that can track and adjust the scale of the input data with three recursive neural network (RNN) submodules. To evaluate object tracking performance, we compare the proposed system with the Kalman filter and the maximum likelihood object tracking scheme under an one-dimensional object movement model in which the object moves with piecewise constant acceleration. We show that the proposed scheme is generally better, in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) performance, than maximum likelihood scheme and Kalman filter and that the performance gaps grow with increased observation noise.

  • Kalman Filter model of demand for residental water and consumption pattern wore tested for their ability to explain the hourly residental demand for water in metro-politan distribution system. The daily residental demand can be obtained from Kalman Filter model which is optimized by statistical analysis of input variables. The hourly residental demand for water is calculated from the daily residental demand and consumption pattern. The consumption pattern which has 24 time rates is characterized by data granulization in accordance with season kind, weather and holiday. The proposed approach is applied to water distribution system of metropolitan areas in Korea and its effectiveness is checked.

  • Flooded lead acid batteries are still very popular in the industry because of their low cost as compared to their counterparts. State of Charge (SOC) estimation is of great importance for a flooded lead acid battery to ensure its safe working and to prevent it from over-charging or over-discharging. Different types of Kalman Filters are widely used for SOC estimation of batteries. The values of process and measurement noise covariance of a filter are usually calculated by trial and error method and taken as constant throughout the estimation process. While in practical cases, these values can vary as well depending upon the dynamics of the system. Therefore an Adaptive Unscented Kalman Filter (AUKF) is introduced in which the values of the process and measurement noise covariance are updated in each iteration based on the residual system error. A comparison of traditional and Adaptive Unscented Kalman Filter is presented in the paper. The results show that SOC estimation error by the proposed method is further reduced by 3 % as compared to traditional Unscented Kalman Filter.

  • Recently, visual object detection and tracking has become a vital role in many different applications. It spans various applications like robotics, video surveillance, and intelligent vehicle navigation. Especially, in current situation where the use of UAVs is expanding widely, detection and tracking to soot down illegal UAVs flying over the sky at airports, nuclear power plants and core facilities is becoming a very important task. The remarkable method in object tracking is correlation filter based tracker like KCF (Kernelized Correlation Filter). But it has problems related to target drift in tracking process for long-term tracking. To mitigate the target drift problem in video surveillance application, we propose a tracking method which uses KCF, adaptive thresholding and Kalman filter. In the experiment, the proposed method was verified by using monochrome video sequences which were obtained in the operational environment of UAV.
