  • High spectral efficiency can be obtained by adaptive modulation in which the modulation scheme is changed according to the channel environment. Thus it is especially suitable to mobile channel which is a typical example of time-varying channel. It is required to determine the optimum thresholds of signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) to change the modulation scheme effectively according to mobile speeds. Thus the optimum thresholds for specific mobile speeds to get the required bit error rate(BER) of $10^{-6}$ are obtained with the powerful turbo code in this paper. In addition, the optimum thresholds for the continuous mobile speed are proposed by interpolation of the obtained results. And the error performance and average spectral efficiency are investigated at various mobile speeds and channel environments.

  • Noise in biomedical X-ray image degrades the quality so that it might causes to decrease the accuracy of diagnosis. Especially the noise reduction techniques is quite essential for low-dose biomedical X-ray images obtained from low radiation power in order to protect patients, because their noise level is usually high to well discriminate objects. This paper proposes an efficient method to remove the noise in low-dose X-ray images while preserving the edges with diverse resolutions. In the proposed method, a noisy image is at first decomposed into several images with different resolutions in pyramidal representation, then the stable map of edge confidence is obtained from each of analyzed image using a fuzzy logic-based edge detector. This map is used to adaptively determine the parameter for guided filters, which eliminate the noise while preserving edges in the corresponding image. The filtered images in the pyramid are extended and synthesized into a resulted image using interpolation technique. The superiority of proposed method compared to the median, bilateral, and guided filters has been experimentally shown in terms of noise removal and edge preserving properties.

  • The Zienkiewicz-Zhu(Z/Z) error estimate is slightly modified for the hierarchical p-refinement, and is then applied to L-shaped plates subjected to bending to demonstrate its effectiveness. An adaptive procedure in finite element analysis is presented by p-refinement of meshes in conjunction with a posteriori error estimator that is based on the superconvergent patch recovery(SPR) technique. The modified Z/Z error estimate p-refinement is different from the conventional approach because the high order shape functions based on integrals of Legendre polynomials are used to interpolate displacements within an element, on the other hand, the same order of basis function based on Pascal's triangle tree is also used to interpolate recovered stresses. The least-square method is used to fit a polynomial to the stresses computed at the sampling points. The strategy of finding a nearly optimal distribution of polynomial degrees on a fixed finite element mesh is discussed such that a particular element has to be refined automatically to obtain an acceptable level of accuracy by increasing p-levels non-uniformly or selectively. It is noted that the error decreases rapidly with an increase in the number of degrees of freedom and the sequences of p-distributions obtained by the proposed error indicator closely follow the optimal trajectory.

  • In this paper, we present a new method to reduce crosstalk of a glasses-free three-dimensional (3D) display using a multi-view image processing technique. Since crosstalk makes the current view image mixed with its neighboring ones, the output 3D image becomes severely blurred. We apply adaptive depth retargeting and view gradient-based crosstalk inverse filtering onto a multi-view image to minimize crosstalk of the glasses-free 3D display. In addition, overflow and underflow pixels are compensated by epipolar image pixel interpolation so that visual artifacts are minimized. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces crosstalk more efficiently than the previous work while improving 3D image quality.

  • Recently, as the necessity of a light-weighted video encoding technique has been rising for applications such as UCC(User Created Contents) or Multiview Video, Distributed Video Coding(DVC) where a decoder, not an encoder, performs the motion estimation/compensation taking most of computational complexity has been vigorously investigated. Wyner-Ziv coding reconstructs an image by eliminating the noise on side information which is decoder-side prediction of original image using channel code. Generally the side information of Wyner-Ziv coding is generated by using frame interpolation between key frames. The channel code such as Turbo code or LDPC code which shows a performance close to the Shannon's limit is employed. The noise model of Wyner-Ziv coding for channel decoding is called Virtual Channel Noise and is generally modeled by Laplacian or Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we propose a Wyner-Ziv coding method based on the frequency-adaptive channel noise modeling in transform domain. The experimental results with various sequences prove that the proposed method makes the channel noise model more accurate compared to the conventional scheme, resulting in improvement of the rate-distortion performance by up to 0.52dB.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic segmentation method of the endo- and epicardial boundary by using ray-casting profile based on intensity distribution and gradient information in CT images. First, endo-cardial boundary points are detected by using adaptive thresholding and seeded region growing. To include papillary muscles inside the boundary, the endo-cardial boundary points are refined by using ray-casting based profile. Second, epi-cardial boundary points which have both a myocardial intensity value and a maximum gradient are detected by using ray-casting based adaptive gradient profile. Finally, to preserve an elliptical or circular shape, the endo- and epi-cardial boundary points are refined by using elliptical interpolation and B-spline curve fitting. Then, curvature-based contour fitting is performed to overcome problems associated with heterogeneity of the myocardium intensity and lack of clear delineation between myocardium and adjacent anatomic structures. To evaluate our method, we performed visual inspection, accuracy and processing time. For accuracy evaluation, average distance difference and overalpping region ratio between automatic segmentation and manual segmentation are calculated. Experimental results show that the average distnace difference was $0.56{\pm}0.24mm$. The overlapping region ratio was $82{\pm}4.2%$ on average. In all experimental datasets, the whole process of our method was finished within 1 second.

  • Contour detection is important for many computer vision applications, such as shape discrimination and object recognition. In many cases, local luminance changes turn out to be stronger in textured areas than on object contours. Therefore, local edge features, which only look at a small neighborhood of each pixel, cannot be reliable indicators of the presence of a contour, and some global analysis is needed. The novelty of this operator is that dilation is limited to Deluanary triangular. An efficient implementation is presented. The grouping algorithm is then embedded in a multi-threshold contour detector. At each threshold level, small groups of edges are removed, and contours are completed by means of a generalized reconstruction from markers. Both qualitative and quantitative comparison with existing approaches prove the superiority of the proposed contour detector in terms of larger amount of suppressed texture and more effective detection of low-contrast contour.
