Terminal Characteristics-Based IP Paging Strategy with Low Power Consumption for Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서 네트워크에 적합한 단말 특성 기반 저전력형 IP 페이징 기법)

  • IP paging strategy, one of the solutions for derived problems in IP mobility support protocol, reduces the messages and the overheads over the network, since there is not registration procedure when a mobile terminal moves into a new router within the same paging area. However, the fact that the mobile terminals with the previous strategy consume electrical power continuously for paging signal reception obstructs the application of IP paging strategy to the IP-based wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a discontinuous paging reception strategy based on the characteristics of the wireless sensor networks and their mobile terminals. As a result of the mathematical analysis, the proposed strategy significantly reduces the terminals' power consumption. In addition, by setting the relating parameters as appropriate values, the proposed strategy can be switched to the continuous reception strategy, or can be adjusted to limit the terminals' power consumption or paging delay.

Study on the low power consumption of active RFID tag system (저전력 능동형 RFID 태그 시스템에 대한 연구)

  • In this study an active RFID system of low power consumption is proposed, for which we improved the tag collection algorithm of ISO/IEC 18000-7 standard and significantly reduced the tag collection time. We classified the type of power consumption according to the operating mode of active RFID and proposed the method which can accurately estimate battery life time. By calculating the power consumptions of proposed and current methods, we can compare the battery life times of both methods. Through this analysis we can demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in battery life time.

A Study on Power Dissipation of The Microprocessor Based on Trace-Driven Simulation (명령어 자취형 모의실험을 기반으로 하는 마이크로프로세서의 전력 소비에 대한 연구)

  • Recently, power dissipation is a very significant issue not only in embedded systems and mobile devices but also in high-end modern processors. Especially, by the prevalent use of smart phones and tablet PCs, low power consumption of microprocessors is requisite. In this paper, a fast power measurement tool for a high performance microprocessor based on the trace-driven simulator has been developed. The power model of the microprocessor consists of complex combinational circuits, array structures, and CAM structures. Using SPEC 2000 benchmarks as input, the trace-driven simulation has been performed to estimate the average power dissipation of each program.

  • While the use of battery-powered embedded systems has been rapidly increasing, the current level of battery technology has not kept up with the drastic increase in power consumption by the system. In order to prolong system usage time, the battery size needs to be increased. The amounts of power consumption by embedded systems are determined by their hardware configuration and software for manipulating hardware resources. In spite of that, the hardware provides features for lowering power consumption, if those cannot be utilized efficiently by software including operating system, reduction in power consumption is not optimized. In this paper, we propose a BET(Break Even Time)-based scheduling method using task partition to reduce power consumption of multimedia applications in a mobile embedded system environment.

0.35㎛ CMOS Low-Voltage Low-Power Voltage and Current References (0.35㎛ CMOS 저전압 저전력 기준 전압 및 전류 발생회로)

  • In this paper 2 types of voltage references and a current reference suitable for low-voltage, low-power circuits are proposed and designed with $0.35{\mu}m\;CMOS$ process. MOS transistors operating in weak inversion and bulk-driven technique are utilized to achieve low-voltage and low-power features. The first voltage reference consumes 1.43uA from a supply voltage of 1.2V while it has a reference voltage of 585mV and a TC(Temperature Coefficient) of $6ppm/^{\circ}C$. The second voltage reference consumes 48pW from a supply voltage of 0.3V while having a reference voltage of 172mV and a TC of $26ppm/^{\circ}C$. The current reference consumes 246nA from a supply voltage of 0.75V with a reference current of 32.6nA and a TC of $262ppm/^{\circ}C$. The performances of the designed references have been verified through simulations.

  • This paper introduces 3 type of OTAs with $0.35-{\mu}m$ standard CMOS technology for Low-Power, Low-Voltage. The first type is a two-stage OTA designed to operate with a 1-V VDD and it has $1.774{\mu}W$ low power consumption. All transistors are operating in strong inversion. It takes Gm-Enhancement techniques to compensate gm, which is lowered by Bulk-Driven technique and has an Wide swing current mirror for low voltage operation and a Class-A output. The second type is a Two-stage OTA designed to operate with a 0.8-V VDD and It has 52nW low power consumption and 112dB high gain. The current mirror uses Composite Transistor binding Gates of two MOSFET to raise Rout which is similar with cascode structure. The third type is a Two-stage OTA designed to operate with a 0.6-V VDD and It has 160nW low power consumption and 72dB high gain. It takes Level Shift technique by Common Gate structure to amplify signals without additional bias voltage at second stage.

  • ULSI는 대용량화, 고밀도화, 저소비전력화 및 고속 다기능화로 기술발전이 이루어 지고 있다. 기술추세에 의하면 90년 후반에 16MDRAM이 개발될 것으로 보인다. 여기에서 16MDRAM의 예상되는 패키지 형태를 알아본 결과 소비전력 50mW, 칩면적 $120mm^2$에 대응하는 SOJ형이 주로 쓰일것이며 재료로는 세라믹이 유망하다.

  • In this paper, the design of a 10-bit 40-MS/s pipelined A/D converter is implemented to achieve low static power dissipation of 70 mW at the ${\pm}2.5\;V$ or +5 V power supply environment for high speed applications. A 1.5 b/stage pipeline architecture in the proposed ADC is used to allow large correction range for comparator offset and perform the fast interstage signal processing. According to necessity of high-performance op amps for design of the ADC, the new op amp with gain boosting based on a typical folded-cascode architecture is designed by using SAPICE that is an automatic design tool of op amps based on circuit simulation. A dynamic comparator with a capacitive reference voltage divider that consumes nearly no static power for this low power ADC was adopted. The ADC implemented using a $1.0{\mu}m$ n-well CMOS technology exhibits a DNL of ${\pm}0.6$ LSB, INL of +1/-0.75 LSB and SNDR of 56.3 dB for 9.97 MHz input while sampling at 40 MHz.

Energy requirement of Korean households from 1995 to 2010: An input-output analysis- (한국 가정부문의 직간접 에너지소비: 산업연관분석)

  • As energy conservation can be realized through changes in the composition of goods and services consumed, there is a need to assess indirect and total household energy consumption. The Korean household sector was responsible for more than 55% of Korea's total energy consumption in the 1995 to 2010 period. More than 69% of household energy consumption was indirect. Thus, not only direct but also indirect household energy consumption should be the target of energy conservation. Electricity consumption became in 2009 the main source of household energy consumption in Korea. Households consume more and more electricity intensive goods and services, a sign of increasing living standards. Decrease in energy intensities of products consumed by Korean households contributed greatly to reduce the increase in the total household energy consumption. However, switching took place towards more energy intensive products, thus the structure effect was negative. It is necessary to direct consumption and production towards much less energy intensive goods and services as to reduce energy consumption or its growth rate. The Korean government should readjust low energy and electricity prices to cost-reflective prices levels as these low prices are one of the main reasons for the consumption of more energy intensive products. This study differentiates prices of oil products and electricity between households and industries, as to allow more accurate estimation.
