  • This study aimed to enhance the durability by distributing the stress concentration at the contact and increasing the mechanical characteristics, as well as by changing the surface shape for LIP in the low-pressure seal among oil seals installed to the power steering of automotive. Accordingly, results were derived from comparisons and reviews with oil seals under the existing mass production by carrying out the performance tests after designs and productions are done with the addition of embo shapes on the surface of LIP in the low-pressure seal. As a result of this study, it has been identified that the durability of oil seals with the addition of embo shapes was enhanced with higher radial force and less variation in the internal diameter for the LIP. In addition, it was seen that the sealing ability for those oil seals is superior to the existing oil seals as their rotational torque values are less than those of the existing oil seals.

  • This paper summarizes the technical difficulties pertaining the double-compression ramp scramjet inlet model testing in a shock tunnel and their corresponding solutions. Four technical difficulties are identified: 1) test facility unstart, 2) flow disturbance and model damage due to the impact of diaphragm debris, 3) lack of fuel jet development due to multiple injection, and 4) short test time. After overcoming the identified technical difficulties, the improved results were confirmed through the results of shadowgraph images and shock tube end wall pressure.

  • The performance test of an axial-type turbine is carried out with various axial gap distances between the stator and rotor. The turbine is operated at the low pressure and speed, and the degree of reaction is 0.373 at the mean radius. The axial-type turbine consists of ons-stage and 3-dimensional blades. The chord length of rotor is 28.2mm and mean diameter of turbine is 257.56mm. The power of turbo-blower for input power is 30kW and mass flow rate is $340m^3$/min at 290mmAq static-pressure. The RPM and output power are controlled by a dynamometer connected directly to the turbine shaft. The axial gap distances are changed from a quarter to three times of stator axial chord length, and performance curves are obtained with 9 different axial gaps. The efficiency varies about 8% of its peak value due to the variation of axial gap on the same non-dimensional mass flow rate and RPM, and experimental results show that the optimum axial gap is 1.6-1.9Cx.

  • This research performed the laboratory model tests for Top-Base Foundation developed in Japan and Floating Top-Base Foundation developed in Korea on the typical clayey soft soils, namely, clay, clayey silt and clayey sand. The performances of the two types of top-base foundation were compared with each other and evaluated by measuring load-settlement, heaving of foundation side, ground stress distribution in this model tests. The change of settlement caused by the increase of top base width was also analyzed. As a result of the model tests, Floating Top-Base Foundation showed better performance in bearing capacity improvement, settlement decrease, stress dispersion effect and lateral confinement force. And settlement caused by the increase of top base width converged to a regular value from $5{\times}5$ layout of the width.

  • The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between kinematic and kinetic characteristics of foot joints resisting ground reaction force. Passive elastic joint moment and angular displacement were obtained from the experiment using 3 cameras and force plate. The relationship between joint angle and moment was mathematically modeled by using least square method. The ranges of motion of joints ranged from 5$^{\circ}$ to 7$^{\circ}$ except metatarsophalangeal joint. In the study, we presented simple mathematical models that could relate joint angle and plantar pressure. From this model, we can got the kinematic data of joints which is not available from conventional motion analysis. Furthermore, the model can be used not only for biomechanical model which simulates gait but also for clinical evaluation.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate biomechanical characteristics of trekking shoes using 3D Bootie method as mimics barefoot form of F Co. that provides the best comfort and plantar pressure dispersion. The control group is normal trekking shoes of M Co. and K Co.. 13 healthy males measured the foot pressure, EMG and GRF. Collected data was analyzed using One-way ANOVA in order to investigate the effects of each trekking shoes. The results are as follows: Trekking shoe of F Co. was significantly wider in contact area than others at MF and significantly lower in maximum force, peak pressure than others at RF. In the case of muscle activity, acted in the same way as the effect of barefoot walking. In the case of GRF, effectively absorbed the impact force, so it is possible to efficient walking. As a result of the analysis, trekking shoe using of 3D Bootie method of F Co. can be efficient walking by reducing the load of foot during walking.

  • This research was undertaken to do the technical and economical feasibility study of membrane water treatment system. For the technical feasibility study, batch water treatment system using UF(ultrafiltration) was set up and several experiments were carried out. The performance of the UF membrane was tested in terms of turbidity. The experimental results showed that the UF membrane process produced less than 1 NTU water regardless of input water turbidity. For the economical feasibility study, the cost model was analyzed and programmed for simulation. Also costs of the membrane water treatment and the conventional treatment were evaluated. The simulation results showed that the unit production cost increased when design flow or permeate flow decreased. The production cost of membrane water treatment system was lower than that of the conventional system. Both technical and economical feasibility study showed that the UF membrane water purification system was a very competitive water purification process.

  • Natural gas in tight reservoirs, one of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, has become a significant exploration and exploitation targets. Tight gas reservoirs are the gas-bearing rocks that commonly have a permeability of less than 0.1 millidarcy (mD). Tight gas reservoirs are characterized by extensive and deep locations as well as abnormal pressure such as over- or under-pressure. The tight gas reservoirs are independent of structural or stratigraphic traps, whereas conventional gases normally occur at these traps. Tight gas reservoirs can be productive when stimulated by hydraulic fracturing. Better production areas within the tight reservoir beds are referred to as sweet spots that are commonly caused by natural fractures, which should be understood and identified to enhance the recovery of the gas from tight reservoirs. The exploration and production techniques allow the commercial production of tight gas, one of environmentally friendly resources. Slant and horizontal wells have best production when they intersect the fractures. Gas production from the tight reservoirs has rapidly grown in U.S. and Canada. Indeed, the U.S. gas production of tight sandstones increases from 11.1% in 1990 to 24.1% in 2005. The presence of tight gas reservoirs has been suggested on the Korean offshore block 6-1. Paradigm shift from conventional to unconventional tight reservoir is required to develop the tight gas from the block.
