In this paper, this study aims at the evaluation on the characteristics of CFRP laminate plates using a falling weight impact tester. The experiment was conducted on several laminates of different orientation. A system was built far measur- ing the impact strength of CFRP laminates in consideration of stress wave propagation theory using a falling weight impact tester. Delamination areas of impacted specimens for the different ply orientation were measured with ultrasonic C- scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen having flour interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the greater the energy absorbed. The absorbed energy oft hybrid specimen containing a GFRP layer was higher than that of normal specimens.
The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to interpret variations in structural and material properties, e.g. for structural integrity monitoring and assessment. To illustrate one of this potential benefit, PVDF film sensors are used for monitoring impact damage initiation in Gr/Ep composite panel. Both PVDF film sensors and strain gages are surface mounted to the Gr/Ep specimens. A series of impact test at various impact energy by changing impact mass and height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The sensor responses are carefully examined to predict the onset of impact damage such as matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage, etc. Test results show that the particular waveforms of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. As expected, the PVDF film sensor is found to be more sensitive to impact damage initiation event than the strain gage.
The PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor as one of smart sensors has good characteristics to detect the impact damages of composite structures. The capabilities of the PVDF film sensor for evaluating impact behaviors and damages of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to low-velocity impact were examined. From sensor signals, the specific wave-forms implying the damage were detected. The wavelet transform(WT) and Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) were used to decompose the piezoelectric sensor signals in this study. The impact behaviors of Gr/Ep laminates were simulated and the impact forces were reconstructed using the sensor signals. Finally, the impact damages were predicted by finite element analysis with the reconstructed forces. For experimental verification, a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy were carried-out. The extent of damage in each case was examined by means of ultrasonic C-scan and the measured damage areas were agreed well with the predicted areas by the F.E.A.
In this study, the material characterization and the dynamic behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite materials has been studied under transverse central low-velocity impact condition by means of the micromechanical model using finite elements. To build up the micromechanical model considering tow spacing and waviness, an accurate unit structure is stacked in x-y-z direction repeatedly. First, the mechanical properties of 3D orthogonal woven composites arc obtained by means of virtual experiment using full scale Finite Element Analysis based on the DNS concepts, and the computed elastic properties arc validated by comparison to available experimental results. Second, using the implementation of this validated micromechanical model, 3D transient finite-clement analysis is performed considering contact and impact, and the impact behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite is investigated. A comparison study with the homogenized model will be carried out in terms of global and local behaviors.
This paper studied the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) and Acoustic Emission sensors characteristics of the laminated composite panels under the low velocity impact. The various impact test by changing impact height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The STFT(short time Fourier transform) and WT(wavelet transform) are used to decompose the each sensor signals. A ultrasonic C-scan and digital scope are used to define damaged area in each case. The test result indicated that the individual sensor signals involve the damage initiation and development.
Recently, composite material which has much excellent mechanical characteristics has been applied in many industries. However, it has a brittle characteristic under impact condition and its invisible characteristics of the damaged area has been the motivation of many engineers investigation. The modified failure criterion is implemented to predict the failure behavior of the composite plate subjected to low velocity impact using commercial finite element analysis code, ABAQUS-Ver. 5.8. The new criterion is in good agreement with experimental results and can predict the failure behavior of the composite plate subjected to low velocity impact more accurately.
Carbon/epoxy composite(CFRP) coupons previously damaged by low velocity impact were tested under static tensile loading and microscope progress of damage was characterized by ultrasonic C-scan, Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) and Acoustic Emission(AE) techniques which were based on the application of elastic waves. The degress of impact damage has been correlated with the AE activity during monotonic or loading/unloading tensile testing as well as the result of ultrasonic test. The coupons were subjected to impact velocities ranged from 0.71 to 2.17 m/sec, which introduced the amount of damage rated as 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50% with reference to the total absorbed energy at fracture. Special attention was paid to determine optimal AE parameters to characterize the microscopic fracture process and to predict the residual strength of composite laminates. AE RMS voltage during the early stage of tensile loading was found an effective parameter to quantify the degree of impact damage. It was also found that the Felicity ratio is closely related to the stacking sequence and the residual strength of the CFRP laminates.
