The subjects were 148 6th grade children selected from three elementary schools in Seoul; family income was less than 2,000,000 won, Statistical techniques were Person's Correlation and Simple and Multiple Regression. Findings were that (1) Perceived parenting behavior was a significant predictor of the school adjustment in low-income children. (2) Perceived parenting behavior was a significant predictor of the ego-identity of low-income children. (3) When the effect of perceived supportive parenting behaviors was controlled, the effect of ego-identity of low-income children was significant. However, when the effect of ego-identity of low-income children was controlled, the effect of perceived supportive parenting behaviors became non-significant.

  • Children from low-income families are vulnerable to variable psychological and emotional stress related to financial issues and dysfunctional families. The subjects were 15 1st to 3rd graders who were low on the Self Esteem Scale (SES). They were attending an after-school center for elementary school students. They participated in three art therapy groups from April to October 2005. Children's depressive symptoms and self-esteem were assessed using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and an observational check-list. Results showed that the group art therapy program brought about significant effects on increasing self-esteem of the children and reducing depressive symptoms, showing that group art therapy can facilitate emotional and psycho-social growth of children from low-income families and can be developed in family-based community programs.

  • This study investigated developmental levels and explored play behaviors in 194 4- and 5-year-old children from low-income families attending 18 daycare centers in Seoul. The Developmental Test for Korean Kindergartners(Korea Institute Curriculum & Evaluation, 1996) was used to assess developmental levels in seven areas. Play behaviors were observed during free-play in their classrooms. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and $x^2$. Results were that the children from low-income families showed highest scores in motor skill development and the lowest scores in mathematical and scientific development. The children engaged most frequently in group-functional play, followed by onlooker behaviors, group-dramatic, and group-constructive play. Onlooker behaviors were the most frequent activity of the 4-year-olds, and the block corner was the most frequently used area during free-play.
