Although faults can be found by geological surveys, the surface traces of faults are not easily discovered by traditional geological surveys due to alluvia. In and around faults and fracture zones, the electrical resistivity appears to be lower than that of the surroundings due to the content of groundwater and clay minerals. Therefore, electrical resistivity surveys are effective to search buried faults and fracture zones. The dipole-dipole array electrical resistivity surveys, which could show the two dimensional subsurface electrical resistivity structure, were carried out in two areas, Yongdang-ri, Woongsang-eup, Yangsan-si, Kyungsangnam-do and Malbang-ri, Woedong-eup, Kyungju-si, Kyungsangpook-do. The one was next to the Dongrae Fault and the other near the Ulsan Fault was close to the region in which debatable quaternary fault traces had been found recently. From each measured data set, the electrical resistivity cross-section was obtained using the inversion program the reliability of which was analyzed using analytic solutions. A low resistivity zone was found in the inverted cross-section from the Yongdang-ri area survey data, and two low resistivity zones were found in that from the Malbang-ri area survey data. They were almost vertical and were 15∼20 m wide. Accounting the shape and the very low resistivity values of those zones (<100 Ωm)in the inverted section, they were interpreted as fracture zones although they should be proven by trenching. The reliability of the interpretation might be improved by adding some more parallel resistivity survey lines and interpreting the results in 3 and/or adding other geophysical survey.
Electrical resistivity survey (2D and 3D) were employed for detection of possible weak zone of core zones of three central core earth-rockfill dams in Korea. In the 2D results, the core zones is lower resistivity zone with less than $50{\sim}400ohm{\cdot}m$, and the basement is relatively higher resistivity zone with over $1,000ohm{\cdot}m$. In the 3D results, especially, the weak zone with under $100ohm{\cdot}m$ was detected spatial distribution area in the dam. We also drilled boreholes to collect soil samples of core zones of each dam. Water was not used during boring, because water for rotary wash boring could cause structural damages in earth dams. We found that the soil samples of core zones from all of the boreholes correspond to CL (USCS), but we also found that the fluidized or water-saturated soil samples were found in lower resistivity zones. Therefore, the electrical resistivity survey and drilling method without water are a quick and efficient method for structural-health evaluation which is detection of possible weak zones in earth core rockfill dams.

To clarify the geological structure of Yangsan fault around Sangchon-ri in the southern part of Kyungsang Basin the resistivity (dipole-dipole profiling) and VLF surveys carried out on the four profiles, crossing the inferred trace of the fault. The resistivity contrast across the fault is clearly shown on the profiles: higher resistivity and lower resistivity on the east and west, respectively. It is most likely from the uplift of the granitic bedrock on the east park due to the strike-fault raulting with vertical movement. The zero-crossing points of VLF anomalies, associated with near-surface fracture zone, are found to well correlate with the resistivity boundaries from the dipole-dipole profiling. Consequently, southern segment of Yangsan fault (at Sangchon-ri area) is interpreted to be vertically developed strike-slip fault with a difference more than 10m depth of basement rock at both sides.

Electrical soundings were conducted in and around the Nanjido waste landfill in August, 1994 and February, 1995. Schlumberger array was adopted and 37 and 22 soundings were performed around and in the Nanjido landfill, respectively. Besides, self potentials were measured at 50 points, in front of the right Nanjido landfill. Interpretations of the sounding data show low resistivity zones of about 10 Ω-m at depth ranging from 10 to 80 m from the surface in front of the landfill and of about 6 Ω-m at depth ranging from 37 m to 130 m in the landfill. It appears that these low resistivity zones are contaminated by or saturated with leachate, and their depths are deeper than those of boring data by 20∼30 m. These results indicate the possibility of contamination of weathered zone and the upper part of the bed rock in these areas. But sounding data obtained at the back of the landfill reveal more resistive and thinner low resistivity zones than those in and in front of the landfill. Thus it is concluded that the degree of contamination by leachate in and in front of the landfill is greater than that at the back of the landfill.
Resistivity surveys can identify the distribution of geological units and structures (including fragmented fault zones), the extent of weathered and modified geological strata, and the characteristics of groundwater. This study aims to analyze the underground sedimentary layers and geological structures near the Nari and Albong Basins of Ulleung-do, Korea, focusing on six survey lines to identify the spatial trends in subsurface resistivity. A modified dipole array method (D method) was employed, combining resistivity results obtained by existing dipole array methods (A and C methods). The modified method provides optimal analysis of the cross-section of underground resistivity, and shows a clear boundary between a low-resistivity zone (${\leq}500{\Omega}{\cdot}m$) of sedimentary layers and weak zones, and a high-resistivity zone (${\geq}5,000{\Omega}{\cdot}m$) of volcanic rock (trachyandesite). The estimated average thickness of the sedimentary layers is 50~100 m for the Albong Basin and 100~200 m for the Nari Basin. An anomaly zone, different from the weak zone in the bedrock, is identified as a caldera fault, and the low-resistivity zone extends from the surface down to the lowest survey depths.
Vertical electrical sounding and 2D electrical resistivity survey were applied for evaluating the characteristics of alluvial layers at a groundwater artificial recharge site. The fine particles in alluvial layer, main target layer of groundwater artificial recharge, may cause clogging phenomena. In this case, electrical resistivity method is an effective technique to verify the spatial distribution of low-resistivity layers, such as saturated silts and clays. On the other hand, much attention should be paid to interpret the resistivity data in unconsolidated layers, because thick clayey overburden sometimes produces a masking effect on underlying interbedded resistive sands and gravels. Considering these points, we designed 35 points arranged in a grid form for vertical electrical sounding and 10 lines for 2D electrical resistivity survey, and concentrated our effort on enhancing the vertical and horizontal resolution of resistivity images. According to the results, 15 meters thick layers consisting of sands and gravels are located in 30 meters below ground. And the spatial distribution of silts and clays are mapped, which may cause clogging. Consequently, this approach can contribute to design and determine the location and depth of injection and observation wells for groundwater artificial recharge.
Low resistivity zone is observed at the lower part of a CFRD (Concrete Face Rockfill Dam). Generally, CFRD tends not to have any saturated zone within the body, but the result of resistivity survey shows that it is possible for the dam to be saturated under 20m depth with water. The level of reservoir was under 10m from the crest. We suspect that this result may come from the wrong 2D inversion process ignoring the 3D geometry of dams. For the analysis of possibility of distortion by different geometry, we perform the 3D forward modeling for the dam and apply the 2D inversion process. And then we check the point of traditional interpretation of resistivity data. By the analysis, it is found that the result of 2D inversion process of 3D geometry of dams, seems to have deep relation with the reservoir level, and the complex 3D structure hide some internal electrical anomaly of dams from resistivity information.
