Low-rank coal with high water content (32.3 wt%) was dried by fry drying, and the fuel characteristics of the dried coal from which the oil was separated by using a high-speed centrifugal separator were analyzed. After fry drying for 6 min and 10 min, the water content decreased to 5.0 wt% and 4.2 wt% respectively. The higher calorific value (HCV) of the coal increased remarkably after fry drying, from 11,442.0 kJ/kg-wet. The oil content of the fry-dried coal was 15.0 wt% and it decreased with an increase in the reheating temperature: 9.7 wt% at $80^{\circ}C$ to 9.3 wt% at $100^{\circ}C$, and then to 8.5 wt% at $120^{\circ}C$. The recovered oil could then be reused. According to of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), there was no difference in the weight loss patterns of the coal samples with different coal diameters at a reheating temperature of $120^{\circ}C$. This was because the amount of oil separated by the centrifugal separator was affected by the reheating temperature rather than the coal diameter. And derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curves of raw coal before the fry-drying process, a peak is formed at $400^{\circ}C$ in which the volatile matter is gasified. In case of the fry-dried coal, the first peak is generated at $350^{\circ}C$, and the second peak is generated at $400^{\circ}C$. The first peak is caused by the oil that is replaced with the water contained in the coal during the fry-drying process. Further, the peaks of the coal samples in which the oil is separated at a reheating temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$, respectively are smaller than that of the coal in which the oil is not separated, and this is caused by that the oil is separated by the centrifugal separator.
Extraction was performed to prepare ash-free coal from low rank coal under the temperature of $200-430^{\circ}C$ and initial pressure of 0.1MPa. Three kinds of coal samples with different rank were used and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone(NMP, polar), 1-methyl naphthalene(I-MN, non-polar), Light Cycle Oil(LCO, non-polar) were used as solvents. Results showed that higher extraction yield could be obtained with NMP than with 1-MN and LCO, but the ash concentration shows minimun in the case of 1-MN. Three operation modes were compared, that is, idle, agitation and ultrasonic extraction mode. From the results, it was found that the extraction yield and ash concentration were 70.09% and 1.03% under the agitation mode, 80.7% and 0.76% under the ultrasonic operation mode respectively in the case of NMP used at the temperature of $350^{\circ}C$. Similar results were obtained with 1-MN. Effect of ultrasonic on the extraction was estimated as 15-20% increase in the yields and 26% reduction in the ash concentration.

In this study, in order to increase solid content of coal water fuel (CWF), various experimental parameters (i.e., coal type, additive, particle size distribution, drying method) were evaluated. To investigate the drying method, specimen is compared to using flash dry, fluidized bed dry and oil deposit stabilized coal. Difference of the solid content between low rank coal and high rank coal in this case indicate that high rank coal exhibits more higher than 20% of the solid cotent. And specimen for dispersibility was prepared by using dispersing agent of 4 types. As a result, using the dispersing agent was shown 5% higher in sold content than the case of not using the dispersing agent. Efficiency of CWF was improved by using fine coal of 80% in the particle size distribution of coal. Result of CWF using drying methods of 3 types, oil deposit stabilized (ODS) coal dried and stabilized was effective 12% higher in sold content than raw coal.

Steam gasification of low rank coals is possible at relatively low temperature and low pressure, and thus shows higher efficiency compared to high rank coals. In this study, the gasification reactivity of four different Indonesian low rank coals (Samhwa, Eco, Roto, Kideco-L) was evaluated in $T=700-800^{\circ}C$. The low rank coals containing $53.8{\pm}3.4$ wt% volatile matter in proximate analysis and $71.6{\pm}1.2$ wt% carbon in ultimate analysis showed comparable gasification reactivity. In addition, $K_2CO_3$ catalyst rapidly accelerated the reaction rate at $700^{\circ}C$, and all of the coals were converted over 90% within 1 hour. The XRD analysis showed no significant difference in carbonization between the coals, and the FT-IR spectrum showed similar functional groups except for differences due to moisture and minerals. TGA results in pyrolysis ($N_2$) and $CO_2$ gasification atmosphere showed very similar behavior up to $800^{\circ}C$ regardless of the coal species, which is consistent with the steam gasification results. This confirms that the indirect evaluation of the reactivity can be made by the above instrumental analyses.
Lignite of low rank coal and petroleum coke of high sulfur content can be high potential energy sources for coal gasification process because of their plentiful supply. The kinetic study of steam gasification has been performed in an atmospheric thermobalance with wood chip, lignite, bituminous, anthracite, pet-coke. The effects of gasification temperature($600{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure of steam(30~90 kPa) on the gasification rate have been investigated. The modified volumetric reaction model was applied to the experimental data to describe the behavior of carbon conversion and to evaluate the needed kinetic parameters. Lignite and wood chip with high volatile content showed high average gasification rates comparing to other fuel and thus they might be proper fuel for gasification processes. The activation energies for wood chip, lignite, bituminous, anthracite, and pet-coke through Arrhenius plot were found to be 260.3, 167.9, 134.6, 82.2, 168.9 kJ/mol, respectively. The expression of apparent reaction rates for steam gasification of various chars have been proposed as basic information for the design of coal gasification processes.

Study on clean and efficient utilization technology for low rank coal with high moisture content is actively ongoing due to limited reserves of petroleum and of high grade coal and serious climate change caused by fossil fuel usage. In the present study, supercritical water gasification of low rank coal was performed. With increasing reaction temperature, content of combustible gases such as $H_2$ and $CH_4$ in the syngas increased while the $CO_2$ content decreased. As the reaction pressure increased from 210 to 300 bar, the $CO_2$ content in the syngas increased while the hydrocarbon gas content decreased. The $H_2$ and $CH_4$ content in the syngas increased slightly with pressure. With the addition of Pd, Pt, and Ru catalysts, it was possible to improve the production of $H_2$. Moreover, the increase of active metal content in the catalyst increased the $H_2$ productivity. The Ru catalyst shows the best performance for increasing the $H_2$ content in the syngas, while decreasing the $CO_2$ content.

In this study, mixed catalytic char gasification of Indonesia low-rank coal Kideco was investigated under nitrogen atmosphere and isothermal conditions at a fixed reactor. The effects of the temperature were investigated at various temperature (700, 750, 800, $850^{\circ}C$). The effects of blend ratio of catalysts ($K_2CO_3$, Ni) were investigated with different blend ratios (1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3 and 9:1). The sample was prepared by mixing with $K_2CO_3$ physically and by ionexchange method with Ni. The data from thermogravimetric analyzer and gas chromatography were applied to four gassolid reaction kinetic models including shrinking core model, volumetric reaction model, random pore model and modified volumetric reaction model.

Due to the increasing demand of high rank coal, the use of low rank coal, which has economically advantage, is rising in various industries using carbonaceous solid fuels. In addition, the severe disaster of global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions is becoming more serious. The Republic of Korea set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by supporting the use of biomass from the Paris International Climate Change Conference and the 8th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand. In line with these worldwide trends, this paper focuses on investigating the combustibility of high rank coal Carboone, low rank coal Adaro from Indonesia, Baganuur from Mongolia and, In biomass, wood pellet and herbaceous type Kenaf were simulated as kinetic reactivity model. The accuracy of the pore development model were compared with experimental result and analyzed using carbon conversion and tau with grain model, random pore model, and flexibility-enhanced random pore model. In row lank coal and biomass, FERPM is well-matched kinetic model than GM and RPM to using numerical simulations.

Recently, much research has been put into finding the causes and solutions of slagging/fouling problems that occur at the end of the boiler. This slagging/fouling, caused by low-rank coal's ash, disturbs the thermal power and greatly reduces efficiency. In environmental aspects, such as NOx pollution, governments have been implementing restrictions on the quantity of emission gases that can be released into the atmosphere. To solve these problems, research on Ash Free Coal (AFC), which eliminates ash from low-rank coal, is in progress. AFC has advantages over similar high-rank coals because it increases the heating value of the low grade coal, reduces the contaminants that are emitted, and decreases slagging/fouling problems. In this study, using a DTF, the changes of NOx emissions, unburned carbon, and the characteristics of ash deposition were identified. KCH raw coal, AFC extracted from KCH, residue coal, Glencore, and Mixed Coal (Glencore 85wt% and residue coal 15wt%) were studied. Results showed that AFC had a significantly lower emission of NOx compared to that of the raw coal and residue coal. Also, the residue coal showed a higher reactivity compared to raw coal. And finally, In the case of the residue coal and mixed coal, they showed a lower ash deposition than that of low-rank coal.
Optimal grinding condition was examined by changing only the size of screen opening with fixing other factors to produce coal fines of particle sizes required for circulating fluidized bed gasifier. At least 85 wt% of the coal particles should fall into the size range of 0.045~1.0 mm for efficient gasification. In this study, hammer mill was used to grind Chinese low rank lignite coal following grinding condition designed by Taguchi method. The analysis of signal to noise ratio showed that optimum grinding condition for the gasifier was 3 mm in primary screen size and 1.3 mm in secondary screen size on the 95% level of significance.
