  • Three dimensional modeling for seafloor topography is essential to monitoring displacements in underwater structures as well as all sorts of disasters along the shore. MBES is a system that is capable of high-density water depth measurement for seafloor topography and is in broad uses for gathering 3D data and detecting displacements. MBES data, however, contain random errors that take place in the equipment offset and surveying process and require systematic researches on the correction of wrong depth measurements. Thus this study set out to propose a post-processing technique to eliminate an array of random errors taking place after equipment offset correction and basic noise correction in the MBES system and analyze its applicability to seafloor topography modeling by applying it to the subject area.

  • The change detection algorithms, based on remotely sensed satellite imagery, can be applied to various applications, such as the hazard/disaster analysis and the land monitoring. However, unchanged areas sometimes detected as the changed areas due to various errors in relief displacements and noise pixels, included in the original multi-temporal dataset at the application of unsupervised change detection algorithm. In this research, the object-based changed detection for the high-spatial resolution satellite images is applied by using the IR-MAD (Iteratively Reweighted- Multivariate Alteration Detection), which is one of those representative change detection algorithms. In additionally, we tried to increase the accuracy of change detection results with using the additional information, based on the cross-sharpening method. In the experiment, we used the KOMPSAT-2 satellite sensor, and resulted in the object-based IR-MAD algorithm, representing higher changed detection accuracy than that by the pixel-based IR-MAD. Also, the object-based IR-MAD, focused on cross-sharpened images, increased in accuracy of changed detection, compared to the original object-based IR-MAD. Through these experiments, we could conclude that the land monitoring and the change detection with the high-spatial-resolution satellite imagery can be accomplished efficiency by using the object-based IR-MAD algorithm.

  • If the inside of a building collapses due to a disaster such as fire, collapse, or natural disaster, the physical security inside the building is likely to become ineffective. Here, physical security is needed to minimize the human casualties and physical damages in the collapsed building. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm to minimize the damage in a disaster situation by fusing existing research that detects obstacles and collapsed areas in the building and a deep learning-based object detection algorithm that minimizes human casualties. The existing research uses a single camera to determine whether the corridor environment in which the robot is currently located has collapsed and detects obstacles that interfere with the search and rescue operation. Here, objects inside the collapsed building have irregular shapes due to the debris or collapse of the building, and they are classified and detected as obstacles. We also propose a method to detect rescue requesters-the most important resource in the disaster situation-and minimize human casualties. To this end, we collected open-source disaster images and image data of disaster situations and calculated the accuracy of detecting rescue requesters in disaster situations through various deep learning-based object detection algorithms. In this study, as a result of analyzing the algorithms that detect rescue requesters in disaster situations, we have found that the YOLOv4 algorithm has an accuracy of 0.94, proving that it is most suitable for use in actual disaster situations. This paper will be helpful for performing efficient search and rescue in disaster situations and achieving a high level of physical security, even in collapsed buildings.

  • Recently, various satellite sensors have been developed and it is becoming more convenient to acquire multitemporal satellite images. Therefore, various researches are being actively carried out in the field of utilizing change detection techniques such as disaster and land monitoring using multitemporal satellite images. In particular, researches related to the development of unsupervised change detection techniques capable of extracting rapidly change regions have been conducted. However, there is a disadvantage that false detection occurs due to a spectral difference such as a seasonal change. In order to overcome the disadvantages, this study aimed to reduce the false alarm detection due to seasonal effects using the direction vector generated by applying the $S^2CVA$ (Sequential Spectral Change Vector Analysis) technique, which is one of the unsupervised change detection methods. $S^2CVA$ technique was applied to RapidEye images of the same and different seasons. We analyzed whether the change direction vector of $S^2CVA$ can remove false positives due to seasonal effects. For the quantitative evaluation, the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve and the AUC (Area Under Curve) value were calculated for the change detection results and it was confirmed that the change detection performance was improved compared with the change detection method using only the change magnitude vector.

  • Existing change detection researches have been focused on changes of land use and land cover (LULC), damaged areas, or large vegetated and water regions. On the other hands, increased temporal and spatial resolution of satellite images are strongly suggesting the feasibility of change detection of small objects such as vehicles and ships. In order to check the feasibility, this paper analyzes the performance of existing pixel-based change detection methods over small objects. We applied pixel differencing, PCA (principal component analysis) analysis, MAD (Multivariate Alteration Detection), and IR-MAD (Iteratively Reweighted-MAD) to Kompsat-3A and Google Map images taken within 10 days. We extracted ground references for changed and non-changed small objects from the images and used them for performance analysis of change detection results. Our analysis showed that MAD and IR-MAD, that are known to perform best over LULC and large areal changes, offered best performance over small object changes among the methods tested. It also showed that the spectral band with high reflectivity of the object of interest needs to be included for change analysis.

  • There are many landslides occurred by typhoons and intense rainfall during the summer seasons in Korea. To predict a landslide triggering it is important to understand mechanisms and potential areas of landslides by the geological approaches. However, recent climate changes make difficult to predict landslide based on only conventional prediction methods. Therefore, the importance of a real-time monitoring of landslide using various sensors is emphasized in recent. Many researchers have studied monitoring techniques of landslides and suggested several monitoring systems which can be applicable to the natural terrain. Most sensors of landslide monitoring measure slope displacement, hydrogeologic properties of soils and rocks, changes of stress in soil and rock fractures, and rainfall amount and intensity. The measured values of each sensor are transmitted to a monitoring server in real-time. The ultimate goal of landslide monitoring is to warn landslide occurrence in advance and to reduce damages induced by landslides. This study introduces the current situation of landslide monitoring techniques in each country.

  • Environmental problems typically occurring in abandoned mine lands (AML) include: contaminated and acidic surface water and groundwater; stockpiled waste rock and mill tailings; and ground subsidences due to mining operations. This study examines the effectiveness of various geophysical techniques for mapping potential hazard and contaminated zones. Four AML sites with sedimentation contamination problems, acid mine drainage (AMD) channels, ground subsidence, manmade liner leakage, and buried mine tailings, were selected to examine the applicability of various geophysical methods to the identification of the different types of mine hazards. Geophysical results were correlated to borehole data (core samples, well logs, tomographic profiles, etc.) and water sample data (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and heavy metal contents). Zones of low electrical resistivity (ER) corresponded to areas contaminated by heavy metals, especially contamination by Cu, Pb, and Zn. The main pathways of AMD leachate were successfully mapped using ER methods (low anomaly peaks), self-potential (SP) curves (negative peaks), and ground penetrating radar (GPR) at shallow penetration depths. Mine cavities were well located based on composite interpretations of ER, seismic tomography, and well-log records; mine cavity locations were also observed in drill core data and using borehole image processing systems (BIPS). Damaged zones in buried manmade liners (used to block descending leachate) were precisely detected by ER mapping, and buried rock waste and tailings piles were characterized by low-velocity zones in seismic refraction data and high-resistivity zones in the ER data.

  • Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) data help to enable rapid emergency responses through detection of the artificial and natural disasters occurring at night. The DNB data without correction of lunar irradiance effect distributed by Korea Ocean Science Center (KOSC) has advantage for rapid change detection because of direct receiving. In this study, radiance differences according to the phase of the moon was analyzed for urban and mountain areas in Korean Peninsula using the DNB data directly receiving to KOSC. Lunar irradiance correction algorithm was proposed for the change detection. Relative correction was performed by regression analysis between the selected pixels considering the land cover classification in the reference DNB image during the new moon and the input DNB image. As a result of daily difference image analysis, the brightness value change in urban area and mountain area was ${\pm}30$ radiance and below ${\pm}1$ radiance respectively. The object based change detection was performed after the extraction of the main object of interest based on the average image of time series data in order to reduce the matching and geometric error between DNB images. The changes in brightness occurring in mountainous areas were effectively detected after the calibration of lunar irradiance effect, and it showed that the developed technology could be used for real time change detection.

  • The frequency of disasters is increasing due to global climate change, and unusual heavy rains and rainy seasons are occurring in Korea. Periodic monitoring and rapid detection are important because these weather conditions can lead to drought and flooding, causing secondary damage. Although research using optical images is continuously being conducted to determine the waterbody, there is a limitation in that it is difficult to detect due to the influence of clouds in order to detect floods that accompany heavy rain. Therefore, there is a need for research using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that can be observed regardless of day or night in all weather. In this study, using Sentinel-1 SAR images that can be collected in near-real time as open data, the UNet model among deep learning algorithms that have recently been used in various fields was applied. In previous studies, waterbody detection studies using SAR images and deep learning algorithms are being conducted, but only a small number of studies have been conducted in Korea. In this study, to determine the applicability of deep learning of SAR images, UNet and the existing algorithm thresholding method were compared, and five indices and Sentinel-2 normalized difference water index (NDWI) were evaluated. As a result of evaluating the accuracy with intersect of union (IoU), it was confirmed that UNet has high accuracy with 0.894 for UNet and 0.699 for threshold method. Through this study, the applicability of deep learning-based SAR images was confirmed, and if high-resolution SAR images and deep learning algorithms are applied, it is expected that periodic and accurate waterbody change detection will be possible in Korea.
