Physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of new Asian pear cultivars (신품종 배의 물리화학적 특성 및 항산화 활성)

  • The Asian pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) has historically been one of the most popular fruits in Korea because of its sweetness and juiciness. Nowadays, 81.5 % pears of the 'Niitaka' cultivar are grown in Korea, and most of these are consumed as table fruits. Due to the increase in consumer demand for novel Asian pear varieties, developing new cultivars is of great commercial interest. Since 1984, 'Niitaka' cultivar has been introduced in Korea and 13.3 % was developed into new cultivars in the last 20 years alone. Recently, the consumption rate of fresh Asian pears has been limited. The demand for pears, especially the 'Niitaka' cultivar has no longer increased. As a result, new cultivars of Asian pears have been introduced and their properties have been investigated. This review article provides an overview of the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of new cultivars of Asian pears.

Diversities of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Cultivated Field Soils of Korean Ginseng (금산의 인삼 재배 토양에 분포하는 수지상균근균의 다양성)

  • In this study, soil samples were collected from cultivated fields of 1-5 year old Korean ginseng in Geumsan, Korea. Spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were extracted from soils and identified using morphological characteristics and 18s rDNA sequences of the spores. Total 10 species of AMF were identified: Acaulospora longula, Archaeospora trappei, Glomus caledonium, Glomus etunicatum, Glomus intraradices, Glomus mosseae, Glomus sp., Paraglomus occultum, Paraglomus brasilianum, and Scutellospora heterogama. Relative abundance of spores of A. trappei were increased with increase of cultivation period of the ginseng. However, relative abundance of other species of AMF and Shannon diversity (H') of AMF were significantly decreased with the increase of cultivation periods of the ginseng.

Culture characteristics of Pleurotus commercial strains at different temperature (계절별 온도에 따른 느타리 품종의 재배적 특성)

  • We determined the genetic relatedness among 81 commercial varieties of oyster mushrooms by either comparison of fruiting body characteristics or using PCR amplification with URP primers. Also, we assessed their temperature adaptation by using box cultivation. Based on our data, some varieties such as Wonhyung and variety 1, Suhan and variety 20, Wang-hukpyung and variety 4, Chunchu #2 and variety 6, Shinong #11 and variety 1, Samgu #1 and variety 2, showed the close genetic relatedness between each other. It is known that mushroom culture room is affected by outer temperature because mushroom need the adequate aeration for their growth. Therefore, in aspect of saving energy, the cultivation of season favorable mushroom species has been recommended. Eight different commercial varieties including Sa-chul, Yeoreum and Bunhong(Pink) grew well at high temperature ($16^{\circ}C$). Also, about 51 different oyster mushroom strains were good at relatively high temperature. However, other 64 different oyster mushroom varieties were grew well at low temperature ($11^{\circ}C$). Fourty-nine varieties were adapted well in most temperatures. The slow growth rate were observed in some varieties including Kun(P. eryngii ), Awi(P. nebrodensis ), and Cheunbok(P. abalonus ), which are not suitable for box cultivation. We believe that the culture characterization of each mushroom varieties should help many farmers in many aspects such as saving energy, quantity improvement and new variety development etc.

  • This study were carried out to analyze nutritional ingredients of pre-inoculation and post-harvest Flammulina velutipes media. pH, moisture content, total carbon(T-C), total nitrogen(T-N), crude protein, crude fiber, and crude fat content on the 8 raw materials using Flammulina velutipes bottle cultivation medium, and after sterilization(pre-inoculation) and post-harvest medium was analyzed. This result is expected to be utilized as the basis for recycling post-harvest media.

Diversity analysis of culture-dependent fungal species isolated from the sawdust media of Lentinula edodes (표고 톱밥배지에서 분리한 배양 진균의 다양성 분석)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the diversity of culture-dependent fungal species in the sawdust media of Lentinula edodes. A total of 405 fungi were isolated from the specimens and identified to belong to 24 genera and 42 species. Among the identified 42 species of fungi, 26.2% belonged to Penicillium sp., 9.5% belonged to Trichoderma sp., and 64.3% belonged to others. Especially, Trichoderma harzianum, which is a causal agent of fungal disease in mushroom, was found on all the farms, and showed the highest frequency among the identified fungi. Community analysis showed that the fungal diversity patterns of the samples were similar to each farm and many kinds of fungi existed in the sawdust media at high levels. These results showed that the management of internal environments would be required for the stable cultivation of Lentinula edodes.

Comparison of Growth and Essential Oil Composition in Two Hydroponically Grown Species of Thymes at Different Nutrient Solution Strength (수경재배시 배양액 내 이온농도에 따른 두 종의 백리향 생육 및 정유 성분 비교)

  • The growth and quality differences between common thyme(Thymus vulgaris L.) and lemon thym (Thymus$\times$citriodorus) were investigated. They were grown in a hydroponics culture system (DFT) with a nutrient solution developed by the European Vegetable R&D Center in Belgium. Nutrient solution ionic strength used were 1.2, 2.4, 4.8 and 7.2 mS.cm-1. The dry matter of two thymes were increased with increasing ionic strength, while shoot length, root length and fresh weight were decreased. Chlorophyll content was higher in lemon thyme, while vitamin C content and essential oil content were higher in common thyme. The essential oil content showed a similar trend as those of growth. The main compostion of essential oil were thymol and carvacrol in common thyme, and geraniol and $\alpha$-citral in lemon thyme. The highest content of these compounds was obtained in 1.2mS.cm-1 treatment. Consequently, the ionic strength of 1.2mS.cm-1 was suitable for the production of quality thymes.

The Anti-aging Effects of Various Berries in the Human Skin Keratinocyte (HaCaT) Cells (피부각질형성세포에서 다양한 베리류의 피부노화개선 효과 비교)

  • Ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation is a negative factor that induces skin damage, inflammation, and aging. UVB irradiation induces the inflammatory response through interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 expression in keratinocytes. In addition, it induces the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activation of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), which plays an important role in collagen 1 degradation in the extracellular matrix. We investigated the antiaging effects of five kinds of berry in human skin keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells using juice of black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis), blueberry wild (Vacciniun angustifolium) and cultivar (Vacciniun corymbosum), black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott), and mulberry (Morus abla). HaCaT cells irradiated with UV-B exhibited increased ROS generation, as well as IL-6, IL-8, and MMP-1 gene expression, when compared to the control cells that were not irradiated with UV-B. However, pre-treatment of berry juice before UV-B irradiation significantly down-regulated the UV-B-induced ROS generation and inflammatory cytokine and MMP-1 expression. The results suggest that all berries have anti-aging effects including lowering inflammatory cytokine levels, ROS generation, and MMP-1 expression in HaCaT cells during UV-B irradiation.

  • 지구온난화에 의해 야기된 기후변화로 인하여 최근 국지성 집중호우의 발생 빈도와 강도가 증가하고 있는 추세이며, 또한 기온, 강수량 등의 변화로 농경지 재배작물과 시설재배와 같은 재배방법의 변화 등 농경지의 재배환경이 빠르게 변화하고 있다. 이러한 극한기상의 발생 빈도 및 강도의 증가와 농경지 재배환경의 변화는 홍수로 인한 하천수 범람, 지하수위 상승, 배수불량, 도달시간의 감소 등 저지대 재배지 및 농경지에서의 침수 위험을 증가 시키는 원인이다. 이로 인해, 매년 농경지 침수로 인하여 많은 농가들이 피해를 겪고 있으며 피해 규모와 빈도 또한 증가하고 있는 추세를 보이고 있다. 따라서 농경지 침수 피해 저감을 위하여 다양한 관계기관과 연구자들이 배수개선사업 및 침수 예측 및 피해 저감을 위한 연구를 수행하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기후변화 및 재배환경의 변화가 농경지 침수에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위하여 기상청 종관기상관측장비(ASOS) 및 방재기상관측장비(AWS)의 지점 강수량 자료를 수집하고 기후변화의 변동 특성을 분석하였다. 또한 과거 농경지 재배 현황 및 침수 피해 발생 자료를 수집하여 농경지 재배환경의 변화와 농경지 침수 피해를 분석하였다. 본 연구에서 수행된 기후변화 및 농경지 재배환경 변화 등 복합적인 요인에 의해 발생하는 농경지 침수 피해에 대한 분석을 통하여 추후 기후변화 및 재배환경 변화를 고려한 배수시설물의 효율적인 운영을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

  • The extensive cultivation of new yielding varieties might give some distruption to the rice insect pest complex in Korea The population of Nephottetix cincticeps and Laodelphax striatellus has decreased in number since the extensive cultivation of new varieties, Tongil lines, in 1976. During the last 23 years, the rice insect pest population except for Chilo suppressalis drastically decreased, however, C. suppressalis population increased again in recent years. This tendency seems to be very closely correlated with the cultivation of new varieties, and a lot of fertilizations and insecticides applications.

The Flowering Characteristics of Non-Spiny Safflowers according to Sowing Time (잇꽃 무가시형 유전자원의 파종시기에 따른 개화특성)

  • 잇꽃(Carthamus tinctorius L.)은 국화과에 속하는 두해살이 초본 식물로 한자명은 홍화(紅花), 영명으로는 Safflower를 사용하고 있다. 우리나라의 잇꽃 재배는 2010년 39ha 수준이 재배되다가 2014년에는 76ha까지 확대되었으나, 점차 감소하는 추세를 보이고 있으며 2020년에는 52ha가 재배되고 있는 것으로 보고되었다. 잇꽃은 종자를 약용으로 이용하거나 꽃잎을 건조하여 천연 염색제 및 향신료로 이용하고 있으나, 일본 산형(山形)현에서는 잇꽃의 경관적 가치를 이용해 홍화 축제를 개최함으로써 소득작목으로 자리매김하고 있다. 본 연구는 지리산을 중심으로 한 준고랭지 지역에서 잇꽃의 경관적 가치의 활용 가능성을 검토하고자, 국립농업유전자원센터로부터 총포에 가시가 없는 무가시형 유전자원(IT323225, IT333473, IT333482)을 분양받아 가시가 있는 재배종과 파종시기별로 개화 특성 등을 비교하였다. 표고 500m 준고랭지의 비가림 하우스에서 3월 하순부터 6월 상순까지 파종시별로 출현율을 검토한 결과, IT 323225 자원은 관행의 3월 하순 파종에서도 40.5%의 낮은 출현율을 보였다. 3월 하순 파종에서 재배종은 6월 22일경에 개화기에 도달하였으나, 무가시형 유전자원들은 7월 2일~5일경에 개화기에 도달하여 만생종의 특성을 보였다. 파종시기를 늦춰 5월 하순에 피종하는 경우 무가시형 자원들은 7월 27일~29일경에 개화기에 도달하였으며, 개화기 전후의 개화 지속기간은 8~10일이 소요되어 3월 하순에 파종하여 7월 상순에 개화하는 경우보다 2~4일이 단축되는 경향이었다. IT333473 자원의 개화기 초장은 5월 하순 파종하는 경우 관행의 3월 하순 파종보다 43.6%가 즐어든 71.1cm를 보였고, 분지수는 41.6% 감소한 8.0개/주 수준을 보였다. 식물체당 착화수 또한 파종시기를 늦춤에 따라 감소하는 경향이었으나 화당 종자수는 IT323225 자원은 5월 중순과 하순 파종시에 증가하는 양상이었고 IT333473 자원과 IT333482 자원은 재배종과 같이 감소하였다. 하계 휴양지로 각광받고 있는 지리산권에서 무가시형 잇꽃 자원의 경관적 가치 활용 가능성을 검토한 결과, 파종시기를 5월 하순으로 늦추는 경우 성수기인 7월 하순과 8월 상순에 개화가 가능하였다. 또한 식물체의 초장이 71.1~83.6cm 수준으로 단축되어 경관 조성에 유리한 특성을 보였다.
