  • The purpose of the present study is to explore the significance of the Commentaries on Pavilions (樓亭記) from the Sancheong-gun area. To achieve this purpose, the study analyzes the works handed down in Sancheong-eup, Chahwang-myeon, Obu-myeon, and Geumseo-myeon, focusing on the two characteristic themes: the discipline and enlightenment of heart and mind (in Chapter 2) and the succession of integrity and the tradition of ancestor worship (in Chapter 3). The first characteristic theme "the discipline and enlightenment of heart and mind" is explicated in Chapter 2 by reviewing the Commentary on Hwanajeong Pavilion (Hwanajeonggi) written for the namesake building located in Sancheong-ri, Sancheong-eup, and the Commentary on Gyeongjeonjae Pavilion (Gyeongjeonjaegi) in Maechon-ri, Geumseo-myeon. The second theme "the succession of integrity and the tradition of ancestor worship" is examined in Chapter 3 based on the Commentary on Sulgojeongsa Pavilion (Sulgojeongsagi) from Jangwi-ri, Chahwang-myeon, and the Commentary on Maeranjeong Pavilion (Maeranjeonggi) from Yangchon-ri, Obu-myeon.

String-like foreign body was located from stomach to upper jejunum. Diffuse laceration, inflammation and perforation caused by foreign body were observed in intestine. Intestinal resection was carried out to remove the foreign body from upper duodenum to upper jejunum. The dog was convalesced successfully after operation.

  • During the survey of plant parasitic nematode of Citrus orchard in Korea, Paratrichodorus minor (Colbran, 1956) Siddiqi is founded from the soil of Citrus unshiu Markovich for the first time in Korea. The body length of females is $428.34{\sim}506.22{\mu}m$ long: a = $12.08{\sim}22.79$, b = $4.02{\sim}5.02$, V(%) = $38.46{\sim}60.68$. The excretory pore is located near the base of esophagus. Additionally, the morphological characteristics on P. porosus (Allen, 1957) Siddiqi, 1974 recorded in 1976 on Korea is redescribed in detail.

  • The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of individual virtues and couple's virtues on marital satisfaction. Virtues are the core characteristics valued by moral philosophers and religious thinkers: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Couple's virtues are the virtues being shared by husband and wife. In the current study, subjects consisted of 107 married couples living in Seoul and local areas in Korea. Each member of the couples was asked to fill out the questionnaires including short version of Values in Action-Inventory of Strengths(VIA-IS), couple's VIA-IS which is made out of VIA-IS to suit couples, and General Dissatisfaction Scale(GDS). Actor-Partner Interdependence Model was applied to assess the couple variables that are inter-dependent by nature. The results showed that couple's virtues had greater effects upon marital satisfaction than individual virtues did. The significance of possessing couple's virtues rather than individual virtues was discussed.

  • Intraosseous phlebography was performed to determine the healing effect of the dosing treated with vitamin-D$_3$ and/or calcium phosphate on the fractured bone in male rabbits. Femoral shafts of 16 adult male rabbits were fractured and these animals were divided into 3 treated groups and 1 control group l. The 1st treated group of rabbits was dosed with vitamin-D$_3$(VD), the 2nd treated group of rabbits was given calcium phosphate(CP), and the 3.d treated group of rabbits received vitamin-D$_3$ and calcium phosphate. The control group of rabbits was dosed with saline alone. Radiographs were taken weekly in each rabbit over 6 weeks period and the results obtained were as follows. 1. Sinusoidal vein was visualized at 3rd week in eve animal received CP and VC, at 5 week in animals received VD and in control animals. 2. Main nutrient vein was observed more clearly in treated groups than in control group of animals. 3. These results indicate that venous reconstruction of the fractured bone in groups of rabbits received CP and VC was earlier and more complete than those of other groups of rabbits. 4. Therefore, intraosseous phlebography is suitable for determination of the bone healing effect of vitamin-D$_3$ and/or calcium phosphate in femoral fractured rabbits.

  • Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas are the second most common primary tumor of the heart and they most commonly affect the left cardiac valves. However, occurrence of this tumor on the right side of the heart has been rarely reported, with only a few cases having been documented on the pulmonary valve. We present here a rare case of a papillary fibroelastoma that occurred on the pulmonary valve and this was successfully managed by replacing the pulmonary valve in a patient with congestive heart failure.

  • Background: Many studies have demonstrated the various therapeutic options for treating hemoptysis caused by inflammatory lung disease. However, there is debate over the surgical management of the ongoing hemoptysis. Therefore, we evaluated the clinical results of pulmonary resection that was done due to hemoptysis in patients with concomitant inflammatory lung disease. Material and Method: We performed a retrospective analysis of 75 patients who received pulmonary resection for hemoptysis and concomitant inflammatory lung disease between 2001 and 2007. The mean age was $52.1{\pm}12.5$ years old, and the male; female ratio was 52:23. Result: The underlying disease was aspergilloma in 30 patients (40%), pulmonary tuberculosis in 20 patients, bronchiectasis in 18 patients and other causes in 7 patients. The surgical treatment included lobectomy in 55 patients, bilobectony in 2 patients, pneumonectomy in 17 patients and wedge resection in 1 patient. There were 3 early deaths, and the causes of death were pneumonia in 1 patient and BPF in 2 patients. The early mortality was statistically higher for such risk factors as a preoperative Hgb level <10 g/dL, COPD and an emergency operation. Conclusion: In conclusion, pulmonary resection for treating hemoptysis showed the acceptable range of mortality and it was an effective method for the management of hemoptysis in patients with inflammatory lung disease. However, relatively high rates of mortality and morbidity were noted for an emergency operation, and so meticulous care is needed in this situation.

  • Amblyomma testudinarium Koch', 1844, previousely known to occur in India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Indochina, the Philipines, Taiwan and Japan, is here firstly discovered and recorded in Korea. A male specimen was collected from grazing Frisian cattle of the Dae Weon Farm on Jeju Island by a local veterinary official on the 28th June in 1981. The specimen was examined at the institute of Veterinary Research in Anyang and was identified as A. testudinarium. The morphological characteristics of the male specimen were redescribed. A tota1 of 18 species of ticks belonging to 7 genera, such as, Argas, Amblyomma, Boophilus, Dermaccntor, Haemaphysalis, Hyalomma and Ixodes, has now been recorded to occur in Korea.
