  • A spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of a machine tool system, but the rotor inevitably has unbalanced mass. This paper presents an analysis of the dynamic behavior. The spindle was used in a CNC lathe and investigated using the finite element method and transfer matrices. The high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to the rotation of an unbalanced mass, which has a harmful effect on many machine tools. Thus, a balancing procedure was performed with a spindle-bearing system for the CNC lathe by numerical analysis. The balancing was performed through the influence coefficient method, and the whirl orbit radii before and after balancing were compared to evaluate the effects. The results show that the rotational speed of the spindle seriously affects the whirl responses of the spindle. The whirl responses were also affected by other factors, such as the unbalanced mass and bearing stiffness. The balancing of the assembled spindle model significantly reduced the whirl orbit magnitude.

  • A newly developed attachment type high-speed spindle can be easily attached to the conventional CNC machining center to allow high-speed machining with low investment costs. This study has focused on the application of a conventional CNC machining center equipped with an attachment type high-speed spindle. A specimen of plastic mold material has been machined to compare the cutting effectiveness of the high-speed machining center and the conventional machining center with the attachment type high-speed spindle respectively. The rotational accuracy of the spindles are measured by a transmission optic measurement system and the surface roughness of the workpiece in accordance with revolution speed(rpm) of the spindle are investigated respectively. As the experimental results, it was shown that the surface roughness of the machined workpiece was $3.42{\mu}mR_{max}$, $0.46{\mu}mR_a$ in the case of attachment type spindle and $1.81{\mu}mR_{max}$, $0.275{\mu}mR_a$ in the case of the high-speed machining center. Moreover, the mean rotational accuracy was $7.57{\mu}m$ in the case of the attachment type spindle and $7.39{\mu}m$ in the case of the high-speed machining center.

  • This paper presents the FEM analysis results on the deformation behavior safety of automatic cut-off horizontal and conventional vertical gas valves. Based on the FEM analysis, the primary maximum deformation of $4.4{\mu}m$ was formed on the right end side of a valve body when the internal gas pressure was supplied on the screw port and gas discharge port of an automatic cut-off horizontal gas valve. And the secondary maximum deformation of $2.9{\mu}m$ was formed on the end side of safety valve port. This small deformation of an automatic cut-off horizontal gas valve is strongly related to the balanced design of a horizontal gas valve main body, which is composed of a screw part, gas outlet port, port for a stem and spindle shaft assembly, and safety valve port. But, the primary maximum deformation of 0.076mm was formed on the upper part of a conventional automatic cut-off vertical gas valve when the internal gas pressure was supplied on the screw port and gas discharge port. And the secondary maximum deformation of 0.055mm was formed on the left end side of a gas outlet port. This may effect on the sealing clearance of o-ring that is inserted on the groove of an automatic cut-off unit. Thus, this paper recommends an automatic cut-off horizontal gas valve compared with that of a conventional gas valve for a gas leakage free mechanism of a LPG cylinder valve.
