  • Since weathered soils are made by weathering process, the characteristics of weathered soils are strongly related to the originated rock and its forming process. Investigations on the originated rock and the weathering environments that decide the forming process are indispensable for the appropriate analysis on weathered soils. In this study, forming process of weathered soil is investigated by geological viewpoint. Test results show that weathering of rock is closely related to the distribution of rock-forming mineral and forming process. Weathered granite soils have the isotropic in-situ stress state and shearing behavior caused by the non-directional characteristics of originated rock. And weathered gneiss soils have the directional characteristics that mechanical behavior is determined by internal discontinuities. It it proved that the weathering resistance of Quarte is greater than that of feldspar and mica, and it is concluded that the thickness of weathered region is greatly influenced by the distribution of rock-forming mineral.

  • Red saprolites are appeared in granitic hills in Yeongam, Southern Korean Peninsula. These red saprolites were analyzed for their geochemistry, including CIA, A-CN-K and A-CNK-FM ternary plots, to understand the chemical weathering trend and rubefaction of the saprolites. These saprolites were compared with laterite profiles in Cameroon formed under humid tropical conditions. The red saprolites in Yeongam show commonly massive loss of CaO, $Na_2O$, but $K_2O$ is being slow. The red saprolites in Yeongam relative to laterite and kaolinite profiles of Cameroon and Spain show weak chemical alteration owing to slow removal of $K_2O$, but high mafic constituents, $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO, for most of the samples. In the saprolites of Yeongam, mafic oxides become enriched because of the fast and massive removal of alkali constituents, such as CaO, $Na_2O$ and $K_2O$, relative to other elements, resulting in rubefaction of the saprolites. It is found that the rubefaction of the saprolites is not necessarily proportional to chemical weathering intensity.

  • Weathering of hornfels pebble in the marine terrace deposits, Yangnam-Myon, Gyeongju was investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and chemical analysis. In the early stage of weathering, only plagioclase was leached leaving pores. With progress of weathering, biotite and chlorite were tranformed to hydrobiotite and chlorite-vermiculite, respectively. Quartz, K-feldspar, and muscovite were not altered. Thickness of weathering rinds and their mineralogical characteristics were different between terraces of different elevations. In the lower second terrace, the weathering of pebble was dominated by the decomposition of plagioclase, while in the upper third terrace, weathering was characterized by the transformation of biotite and chlorite with precipitation of halloysite from the weathering of plagioclase. Thickness of weathering rind and weathering products were varied even within the same terrace deposit probably due to local variation of drainage conditions.

  • Geology of the Dogdo Quadrangle consissed of metamorphosed sediments and granite. By microscopic observation the writer divided the former rocks into the feldspar quartz schist, biotite gneiss and sericite schist. The Seoul granite, which has intruded in the feldspar quartz schist, is distributed in the west half of the age Dogdo quadrangle. The Seoul granite is believed to have intruded in jurassic period, but the age of the metamorphic rocks is Pre-jurassic, though the schist and gneiss have been correlated to the Yeoncheon System of Precambrian. Soil samples were sampled from the locations where no contamination of other rockes is permitted. Results of mechanical analysis, PH and soil structure of the samples are shown, Soils from metamorphic rocks have been subjected to more weathering than granite soil though some of them have higher sorting coeffcient.

  • This study examined geological characteristics of a wetland in Mountain Geumjeong in Busan Metropolitan City. Field survey and laboratory tests were performed to identify topographic features, geological and structural geological characteristics, rock strength along the distance from the wetland, soil profile in the wetland, and chemical property of the wetland soil. The bedrock of the wetland consists of hornblende granite. Hornblende granite and rhyolitic rock around the wetland have the joints with strikes of N-S, E-W, and NE-SW directions and with higher dips greater than $60^{\circ}$. Lower rock strength and higher weathering grades take place towards the wetlands. According to X-ray diffraction analysis of wetland soil samples, kaolinite, montmorillonite, and gibbsite appear which demonstrate weathered products of feldspars in the hornblende granite. The soil profile in the wetland comprises O, A, B, and C horizons from the land surface. The contents of the organic matters decrease from shallow parts to deeper parts of the soil profile. In addition, $K^+$ and $Na^+$ originating from the weathering of feldspars are dominant components among inorganic ions in the wetland soil.

  • Diverse microtextures and secondary minerals formed by chemical weathering were observed in the glacial debris of King George Island. Weathering rind was observed in the block of basaltic andesite tuff due to dissolution of calcite producing voids. Eolian volcanic glass altered to mixtrure of allophane-like materials and iron oxyhydroxides at grain edges with relative concentration of Al. Fe, and Ti. Biotite in granodiorite area was transfarmed to vermiculite and interstratified biotite-vermiculite or very rarely to kaolinite and gibbsite. Pyrite in the hydrothermal alteration zone was repalced by iron oxides, resulting in sulfuric acid which locally accelerated alteration of chlorite to expandable clay minerals. Weathering of plagiociase and K-feldspar was negligible. Although glacial debris of the Barton Peninsula has undergone weak chemical weathering with formation of some secondary minerals, massive formation of smectite, abundant in nearby marine sediments, didn't occur.

  • This study demonstrates the consolidation effect of ethylsilicate consolidants considering material characteristics and weathering degree of Samneunggyeseongakyukjonbul(rock-carved Yukjonbul Buddha in Samneung Valley) in Namsan, Gyeongju. The buddha statue is composed of alkali feldspar granite and contains numerous sets of joint with exfoliation and granular disintegration, therefore the statue is necessary to be treated for surface strength. The laboratory and in-situ tests of consolidation effect showed more increase of ultrasonic velocity that KSE 300, a relatively highly concentrated consolidant, performed more increase of ultrasonic velocity and decrease of porosity than others after treatments in weathered granite. And the consolidated rock with OH 100 was more resistant to salt weathering. For the buddha statues, KSE 300 is more applicable to enhance surface strength because it showed higher consolidation effect for long term than OH 100 and the statues has not been weathered by salts.

  • The constituting rocks of Multi-storied Round shape stone Pagoda of Unjusa Temple are lithic tuff and rhyolite tuff breaccia which show green or grey and also rock fragment with poor roundness are present in the structure. lithic tuff is composed of feldspar and quartz which are glassy texture and cryptocrystalline and also micro crystalline are scattered. phenocryst quartz and feldspar in the substrate composed of feldspar and opaque minerals are found in rhyolite tuff breaccia. dust, exfoliation, cavity, fracture and crack are observed in all the stone of the pagoda and the result of Infrared Thermography shows partial inter cavities have developed severely which may cause further exfoliation. In addition, a great deal of various grey, green, and yellow brown lichen as well as bryophyte are present at the upper part of eastern and western roof stone located above the third floor. Discolors remarkably shown at stereobate and roof stone are identified as inorganic pollutants such as manganese oxide, iron oxide and iron hydroxide. The stone of the pagoda of the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) and the Weathering Potential Index (WPI) are 55.69 and 1.12 respectively and this corresponds to a highly weathered stage. The measured values, average ultrasonic velocity 2,892m/s, coefficient of weathering 0.4k and compressive strength $1,096kg/cm^3$, suggest that the rock strength and durability are weakened.

  • Reddish brown clay-silt sediments covered granitoid weathering crust in the Jangdongri area, Naju, Korea. Mineralogical and geochemical properties of the ~2 m sediment section were investigated. The sediments were composed mainly of quartz (50%) and clay minerals (45%) with minor contents of K-feldspar, goethite, hematite, and gibbsite. The clay minerals were illite, illite-smectite mixed-layers, vermiculite, hydroxy-Al vermiculite, kaolinite, and halloysite. Mineral composition varied little through the section with the minor upward enrichment of plagioclase and chlorite. Abundant illitic clay minerals indicated the remote source of the sediments because clays derived by granite weathering in Korea were dominated by kaolin minerals. A comparison with the mineral composition of Asian dust (Hwangsa) suggested that plagioclase and K-feldspar disappeared by chemical weathering after deposition, resulting in the quartz and clay-rich sediments. Plagioclase and chlorite altered to kaolin and vermiculite, respectively. Goethite and hematite derived by the weathering of iron-bearing minerals stained the sediment to reddish brown color. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of the reddish brown clay-silt sediments were consistent with those of eolian deposits identified in Korea, supporting eolian origin of the Jangdongri sediments, requiring future confirmation including age dating and isotopic analysis.
