Analysis of the Distinction of the Korean Movies in the Japanese Market (일본에 수출된 한국영화 특성 분석)

  • The purpose of the study is to identify the characteristics of films to be exported into a larger market abroad, especially the Japanese film market which occupies more than a half of the export costs of the Korean movies. Our analysis shows that the factors such as the reputation of a director and actors in Japan, the box-office record in Korea and genres have influence upon the export to the Japanese market. Among genres, comedy movies were less exported, while melodramas was more. We expect that this result will be helpful when film producers plan movies for export from the stage of pre-production.

  • If we look into genre movie, we can see that almost similar forms are repeated in a movie. Such similar elements are largely divided into three units from a mass of story to a very small camera angle. Those can be explained as Formula, Convention, and Iconography. Among those three, convention means custom and it is a structure or an incident in which one story can be divided into second one. Convention is an incident visualized in individual genre, and a movie director tunes audiences through the incident. The director leads a familiar story but all of a sudden, he transforms the familiar scene to a new story. As a product established from the beginning of movie history, movie convention helps communication between audiences and a director. Audiences familiarize themselves with movie convention through repeated activities of watching movies, and the director utilizes it to provide audiences with familiarity. Director Bong Joon-ho not only tunes audiences through traditional convention but also creates a new art work through transformation of convention. A study is conducted on how he used traditional convention and transformation to get a new idea and to engage in his work through his work .

  • With the continuous development of the Internet and digital, platforms are emerging to store large amounts of media data and provide customized services to individuals through online. Companies that provide these services recommend movies that suit their personal tastes to promote media consumption. Each company is doing a lot of research on various algorithms to recommend media that users prefer. Movies are divided into genres such as action, melodrama, horror, and drama, and the film's audio (music, sound effect, voice) is an important production element that makes up the film. In this research, based on movie trailers, we extract audio for each genre, check the commonalities of audio for each genre, distinguish movie genres through supervised learning of artificial intelligence, and propose a utilization method for generating metadata in the future.

  • The 1920s 'cinema-novel' is composed of various media effects based on cinematic imagination, and it is designed to constantly evoke the image of the film during the reading process. This article focuses on 'cinema-novel' as an example of an unprecedented genre experiment. It is because the process of formation and development of this unique genre is filled with contemporary characteristics of the 1920s art that strived to create a content suitable for the modern art medium.

  • Chinese xian-xia films is a new genre that occurred through the fusion of the genre of martial arts and fantasy. This study analyzed the development of xian-xia films and the space aesthetics of xian-xia films through the miseenscene of the journey to the west films. In particular, the space for xian-xia in the films is divided into the human, urinary, heaven world and the space of conflict. It looks like the fantastic Middle Earth that Tolkien presented, however it is discriminatory in that it shows a highly Chinese appearance and overlapping world centered on the natural environment (the world of Mountains and Livers), such as mountains, deserts, caves, and grasslands, which usually appears in traditional martial arts history. Resently, the boom of journey to the west films is regarded as the change of the Chinese film industry under the influence of the development of IP (Intellectual Property) industry and the western fantasy genre in the 21st century China. This change marks the birth of the new Chinese fantasy "xian-xia" genre with the spirit of the present era that transcends the original world of journey to the west through the hybridization of the genre.

A Study on the Trend of Korean Movies and the Issues Caused by Industrialization and the Alternatives (한국영화의 트렌드와 산업화에 따른 문제와 대안)

  • This study focuses on analyzing the trend of Korean movies and the issues caused by industrialization and the alternatives. The results are as follows: first, there does not exist distinctive genre movie as most of the movie producers concentrate on thoughtless genre fusion of movie, simply hoping for box office success. Second, Giant companies that has large amounts of money and distributors tend to monopolize production, distribution, and running of movie. Consequently, the development of diversity and artistry is absolutely impeded. Third, the structure of Korean movie industry make some well-known movie stars survive the film world and staff members and actors except them face economic difficulty. The solution plans for the problems mentioned above can be drawn like this; first, genre film with distinctive features should be developed. Second, the monopolistic structure of the screen should be changed. Legal organizations are required to redesign the system of unfair Korean film industry. Third, it is suggested that quantitative expansion of special theaters of diversity film be urgently needed. Fourth, appearance fees given to popular movie stars, actors, and staff members have to be provided in a balanced way. Fifth, the way for revitalization of film production should be found through the legal examination of fund for film development. Last but not least, the profit from the additional film market ought to be made.

  • 이 연구는 더글라스 서크(Douglas Sirk) 감독의 <천국이 허락한 모든 것> (1955)과 이용주 감독의 <건축학 개론>(2012)에서 집에 대한 '재현' 공간을 고찰하였다. 두 멜로드라마 장르 영화는 등장인물들이 대사로 직접 표현한 수 없는 것들을 가구, 소품 등의 미장센, 특히 리모델링을 하는 집을 통해서 보여준다. 집은 욕망을 스타일과 형식을 통해 산출한다는 점에서 멜로드라마 장르의 공간을 특징짓는 서술적 사건과 모티프를 담고 있는 구체적 장소의 역할을 한다. 이러한 맥락에서 이 연구는 멜로드라마 장르에서 집과 풍경들이 어떻게 영화적 공간(cinematic space)을 구성하고 그 재현공간이 갖는 사회적인 의미를 고찰한다.

Study on the Relationship between the Pay TV Subscriber's Genre Preference and VOD Purchase : Focusing on the Movie VOD of IPTV Service (<유료 방송 가입자의 장르 선호도와 VOD 구매의 관계에 관한 연구:IPTV 영화 VOD 이용을 중심으로>)

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the Pay TV subscriber's genre preference and VOD purchase by analyzing actual purchase data of movie VOD of IPTV subscribers for 8 months. The result shows as follows. First, in case of purchasing movie contents below 4000 won, user's genre preference was higher than that of using contents over 4,000 won. This means the subscribers tend to follow their genre preference when the mass-typed recommendation is limited. Second, those who purchase foreign contents show higher genre preference than those who purchase domestic movies. Third, subscribers who purchase more frequently and much more tend to use more diverse genres. Heavy users or those who have higher willingness to pay would consume more diverse contents. It implies that VOD use would increase by supplying the personal recommendation service based on the subscriber's genre preference.

  • There have been proposed several movie recommendation algorithms based on Collaborative Filtering(CF). CF decides neighbors whose ratings are the most similar to each other and it predicts how well users will like new movies, based on ratings from neighbors. This paper proposes a new method to improve the result predicted by CF based on genres of the movies seen by users. The proposed method can be combined to the most of all existing CF algorithms. In this paper, a performance evaluation has been conducted between an existing simple CF algorithm and CF-Genre that is the proposed genre-based method added to the CF algorithm. The result shows that CF-Genre improves 3.3% in prediction performance over existing CF algorithms.

  • 본 논문은 연대기적 흐름에 따른 영화 이론의 발전 양상을 통해 영화의 분석 방법과 관점을 어떻게 분류해야 하는지 제시하고자 한다. 영화는 고전과 현대를 명확히 나누기는 모호하지만 제 2차 세계대전을 기준으로 전과 후를 분류할 수 있다. 영화 초기에는 장르가 다양하지 않았지만 현대로 가면서 점차 고전적 내러티브에서 벗어나 새로운 장르와 형식을 추구했기 때문에 영화와 그 이론 또한 영역이 확장되었다. 이러한 영화의 유형은 고전 영화를 근간으로 발전하여 실험영화로서의 다양한 형태와 이론을 제시하게 되었다. 따라서 영화 이론의 흐름이 어떤 식으로 발전되었으며 그것이 현대 영화를 분석할 때에 어떻게 접근해야 하는가에 대한 관점을 고찰한다.
