  • Generally, the repeated traffic loading condition should be considered to predict the long-term deformation on road foundations or foundation systems. However, it is not easy to estimate long-term deformation on multi-layered system like roads and railways. For more quantitative analysis, mechanistic-empirical approach requires proper analytical tool, material's model, and material properties of foundation geomaterials under both traffic and environmental loadings. In this study, therefore, laboratory data from the long-term repeated load triaxial tests were used to predict accumulated deformation on pavement foundations and the results were analyzed based on the nonlinear models and stress state considered. All these results are presented and verified on laboratory based scale using the finite element analysis with the deformation characteristics of foundation geomaterials at various stress states.

  • In this paper, the existing formulas of the step-by-step method were generalized for effective estimation of responses of complicated composite sections due to long-term deformation of concrete. The initial transformed section properties of the composite section were derived from material and section properties of concrete section and sections which confine the longterm deformation of concrete. The transformed section properties at each step were derived from the effective modulus of elasticity considered the creep coefficient variation. Improved formulas of the step-by-step method for generalized responses were derived by introducing 5 generalized parameters. The formulas can be more simplified by applying constant increment of creep coefficient at each step. The constant increment of creep coefficient at each step can also reduce computing time and make equal computing error of each step. The generalized responses for axial elastic strain of concrete section were most sensitive to the area rate of concrete section, and the ratio of the second moment of the confining section area was more sensitive than that of the concrete section. Those for elastic curvature of concrete section were most sensitive to the ratio of the second moment of concrete section area.

  • It is essential to take consideration of long-term deformation characteristics of mechanically stabilized earth wall user sustained and repeated loads for design and construction, especially for use as part of permanent structures. This paper presents the long-term performance of a full-scale geogrid reinforced segmental retaining wall results based on the measured strains in geogrids for three years. The results indicate that the reinforcement tensile strains tend to continuously increase after wall completion with the increase being more pronounced in the reinforcement layers in the lower tier. It can be concluded that the long-term deformation should be taken in account for walls constructed as part of permanent structures for which wall deformation should be controlled.

  • Despite a number of advantages of reinforced earth walls over conventional concrete retaining walls, there exit concerns over long-term residual deformation when they are subjected to repeated and/or cyclic loads, especially when used as part of permanent structures. In view of these concerns, in this paper time-dependant deformation characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced modular block walls under sustained anuor repeated loads were investigated using reduced-scale model tests. The results indicated that a sustained or repeated load can yield appreciable magnitude of residual deformation, and that the residual deformations are influenced not only by the loading characteristics but by the mechanical properties of geogrid. It is also found that the preloading technique can be effectively used in controlling residual deformations of reinforced soils subjected to sustained and/or repeated loads.

  • A restraint coefficient for creep and dry shrinkage deformation of concrete in a composite section was derived to calculate the residual stress, and an equation for the loss rate of the pre-compression force was proposed. The derived restraint coefficient was computed by using the transformed section properties for the age-adjusted effective modulus of elasticity. The long-term behavior of complicate composite sections could be analyzed easily with the restraint coefficient. The articles of the current design code was examined for PSC and steel composite sections. The dry shrinkage strains of $150 ~ 200$\times$10^{-6}$ for the computations of the statically indeterminate force and the expansion joint could be under-estimated for less restrained sections such as the reinforced concrete. The dry shrinkage strain of $180$\times$10^{-6}$ for the computation of residual stress in the steel composite section was unreasonably less value. The loss rate of 16.3% of the design code for the PSC composite section in this study was conservative for the long-term deformation of the ACI 205 but could not be used safely for that of the Eurocode 2. For pre-compressed concrete slab in the steel composite section, the loss rate of prestressed force with low strength reinforcement was much larger than that with high strength tendon. The loss rate of concrete pre-compression increased, while that of pre-tension decreased due to the restraint of the steel girder.

  • Many countries are interested in the development of the Antarctic area because of the abundant resources and living things of high research value. Korea completed the second Antarctic research station in 2014 and spurring the development of the Antarctic area by constructing runway for the airplanes and a third Antarctic research station. However, frozen soils, unlike typical soils, are sensitive to creep behavior due to the influence of ice and unfrozen water. The creep tests for evaluating creep behaviors on the frozen soils require expensive laboratory equipments and large amount of time. Thus, various empirical models had been developed to describe the unconfined compressive creep behavior of frozen soils. In this study, new analytical creep model on frozen sands was proposed by modifying Ting's Tertiary creep model with a new parameter considering fine contents. Thus, the unconfined compressive creep tests were conducted with the frozen specimens of dense Jumoonjin sand with fine contents of 0, 5, 10 and 15% under various loads at -$5^{\circ}C$, -$10^{\circ}C$ and -$15^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the modified Tertiary creep model with a new parameter for fine contents are not enough for the description of the acutal creep behavior of the frozen sand and new framework should be developed.
