Fungicidal and insecticidal activities of various grain extracts against five insect pests and six phytopathogenic fungi (다양한 잡곡 추출물의 살균.살충활성)

  • Methanol extracts from 21 grains were tested for fungicidal activities against six phytopathogenic fungi and for insecticidal activities toward five insect pests in a greenhouse. The efficacy varied with both the plant pathogen/insect pest and grain species used. Potent fungicidal activity at 5 mg/pot, were produced from extracts of Elymus sibiricus and Hordeum vulgare var. nudum against Pyricularia grisea and Erysiphe graminis and these of Sesamum indicum (W) and Triticum aestivum against Puccinia recondita and Erysiphe graminis. At 2,500 ppm, potent insecticidal activities were exhibited from the extracts of Fagopyrum esculentum against Myzus persicae and Ischaemum crassipes, and these of Oryzo sativa var. glutinosa, Panicum miliaceum, Setaria italica, Sorghum bicolor, and T. aestivum against Tetranychus urticae. All grain extracts revealed weak or no fungicidal and insecticidal effect against Phytophthora infestans, Plutella xylostella and Spodoptera litura. As a naturally occurring fungicide and insecticide, grain-derived materials described could be useful as new fungicidal and insecticidal products against phytopathogenic fungi and insect pests.

Quality and Antioxidant Characteristics of Commercially Available Mixed Grains in Korea (국내 유통 혼합잡곡 제품의 품질 및 항산화 특성)

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the quality characteristics and antioxidant characteristics of commercially available mixed grains in Korea. The quality characteristics of mixed grain products studied were the mixing ratio, water binding capacity, water solubility, swelling power, and pasting characteristics. The antioxidant characteristics assessed the total polyphenol, flavonoid contents, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. The mixing ratio of commercially available mixed grain products consisted of 5~25 kinds of grains, with maximum products containing 15-grain products. The water binding capacity, water solubility, and swelling power in commercially available mixed grain products were 99.83~122.83%, 6.91~39.26% and 7.76~86.92%, respectively. The peak, trough, breakdown, final and setback viscosity were $31.53{\pm}20.17RVU$, $25.24{\pm}13.22RVU$, $6.29{\pm}7.43RVU$, $50.27{\pm}25.84RVU$ and $18.74{\pm}8.68RVU$, respectively. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were $817.14{\sim}2,524.29{\mu}g\;GAE/g$ and $106.36{\sim}1,099.09{\mu}g\;CE/g$, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were 31.91~151.70 mg TE/100 g and 28.09~119.92 mg TE/100 g, respectively. Products with high phenol content and radical scavenging activity were found to contain greater proportion of brown rice, colored rice, barley and soybean.

Effects of Hairy Vetch and Rye Cover on Weed Occurrences and Minor Cereal Growth (피복작물처리에 따른 잡곡의 생육과 잡초발생)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the weed suppressing effects of two winter cover crops, hairy vetch and rye in foxtail millet and sorghum fields in 2010. Crop growth and development and weed occurrences in the fields were examined to know the efficiency of proposed cropping system. In hairy vetch treated plots, heading of minor cereals occurred early. The heading date was earlier by 1 day and 2 days in sorghum and foxtail millet, respectively. However, rye treatment delayed heading by 12 days and 8 days in sorghum and foxtail millet, respectively. Besides he effect of cover crop on ear emergence of crops, the Besides changed growth-related characteristics. Plant height, chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence of sorghum ere increased in hairy vetch treatment by 46.4% 88.7% and 7.9%, respectively. In foxtail millet, the characteristics ere also increased by 45.6%, 50.9% and 37.8%, respectively, s compared to control. Yields of sorghum and foxtail millet were increased by 105.1% and 135% as compared o control by hairy vetch treatment, respectively. However, he yields of cereal crops were decreased by rye cover crop treatment, the yields of sorghum and foxtail millet were decreased by 25.8% and 119.1%, respectively. Rye cover crop treatment inhibited crop growth suggesting nitrogen starvation in rye treated plots. In rye treatment, plant height, chlorophyll contents and chlorophyll fluorescence of sorghum ere slightly decreased by 7.1%, 10.8% and 10.8%, respectively, as compared to control whereas the inhibitory effects were greater in foxtail millet. Weed occurrences based n weed number in hairy vetch and rye plots were reduced n weed number in hairy vetch and rye plots were reduced y 27% and 20%, respectively. The smothering effect was weakened or disappeared after heading of crops. Weed number and dry weight in hairy vetch plot were increased by 159% and 55.2%, respectively, as compared to control. The results implied that weed suppressing of cover crops could be reduced drastically after heading of crops.

Changes of Physicochemical and Microbiological Properties of Gamma-Irradiated Miscellaneous Cereals (감마선 조사한 잡곡류의 물리화학적, 미생물적 특성 변화)

  • Physicochemical and microbiological properties of red beans, soybeans, barleys, and corns irradiated by gamma-ray at 1.2 kGy, 10.1 kGy, or 30.5 kGy were investigated. Moisture content and crude lipid content of the irradiated cereals showed no significant difference from the nonirradiated group. TBA values of corns irradiated at 30.5 kGy increased. Gamma irradiation reduced the numbers of mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria in the cereals. Yeasts and molds were reduced below detection levels even at 1.2 kGy dose-irradiation. There was no significant difference in reducing sugars between the irradiated cereals and the nonirradiated ones except corns. Stachyose, raffinose, and sucrose of soy beans and sucrose of barleys increased by 30.5 kGy dose-irradiation. Loss of riboflavin content of the irradiated samples was not observed except red beans irradiated at 30.5 kGy. In Hunter's color, b value of the red bean powder increased but L value of the soybean powder decreased by the Irradiation. L, a, and b values of the barley powder slightly increased under 30.5 kGy dose-irradiation and b value of the corn powder decreased under 10.1 or 30.5 kGy-dose irradiation.
