Effects of Laser Source Geometry on Laser Shock Peening Residual Stress (레이저 광원 형상이 레이저 충격 피닝 잔류응력에 미치는 영향)

  • In LSP (laser shock peening) treatment, the laser source geometries when the laser beam strikes the metal target area are diverse. The laser spot geometry affects the residual stress field beneath the treated surface of the metallic materials, which determines the characteristics of the pressure pulse. In this paper, detailed finite-element (FE) simulations on laser shock peening have been conducted in order to predict the magnitude and of the residual stresses and the depth affected in Inconel alloy 600 steel. The residual stress results are compared for circular, rectangular, and elliptical laser spot geometries. It is found that a circular spot can produce the maximum compressive residual stresses near the surface but generates tensile residual stresses at the center of the laser spot. In the depth direction, an elliptical laser spot produces the maximum compressive residual stresses. Circular and elliptical spots plastically affect the alloy to higher depths than a rectangular spot.

  • It is well recognized that residual stresses of the rails, generated from the manufacturing process including roller straightening and heat treatment, play an important role in determining fatigue and fracture properties of the rails. Thus, it has been a challenge to measure the residual stresses accurately. In this work, contour method was employed to evaluate the residual stresses existing in interior of the rails. The cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the rail was cut at a very slow rate using electric discharge machining (EDM), after which a laser-based flexural measuring instrument enabled us to precisely measure the flection of the cross section. The measured data were converted into the residual stresses using the commercial finite element package, ABAQUS, through a user-defined element (UEL) subroutine, and the residual stresses of the new rails (50N, KR60, UIC60) with three different specifications were compared.

A Study of Residual Stress and Plastic Deformation of a Bar with Gap Size Changes Between Rolls in a Two Cross-Roll Straightener (두롤 교정기의 롤 갭 변화에 따른 봉강의 잔류응력과 소성변형에 관한 연구)

  • Cold drawn(CD) bars feature superb surface roughness, dimensional precision, and straightness. They are used in the manufacture of automotive parts and home electrical appliances. Two cross-roll straighteners have been used to manufacture CD bars for these industries. This study investigated the variation of the gap size between the two cross-rolls. It was found that changes in the gap size have a large influence on the residual stress and plastic deformation. Finite element method(FEM) simulations were performed to study the influence of the gap size on the residual stress in CD bars, and experiments were performed to verify the FEM results. The residual stresses were measured with X-ray diffraction in both the axial and the hoop directions.

  • Pressurized high temperature plastic resin flows into the cavity of mold and is solidified in injection molding process. Residual stress is being developed in injection molded part because of high temperature variations and high pressure. Developed residual stress relaxes as time goes. Consequently this makes part deformed and deteriorates quality of product. A measurement method of residual stress for injection molded transparent articles has been investigated using photoelasticity. Light, a composite of electromagnetic waves, is purified into a single wave by a polarized film. When this wave passes through the specimen, birefringence is developed according to the level of residual stress in the specimen and color fringed pattern appears after the second polarized film. Residual stress in the injection molded transparent flat a part has been measured quantitatively using the color fringed pattern. Optical characteristics have been a part also predicted by computer simulation and compared with experimental results.

  • 최근에 세라믹-금속 접합, 열차폐코팅(Thermal Barrier Coating), 마모저항코팅등 이종재료접합의 이용이 급증하고 있다. 열차폐코팅의 경우, 고온환경쪽에 세라믹을 배치하여 내열성을 부여하고, 냉각환경쪽은 금속재료를 사용하여 열전도성과 기계적 강도를 부여한다. 이 때 두 재료의 경계부에서는 열적, 기계적 특성 차이로 인하여 제조과정이나 사용중에 열적, 기계적 부하에 의하여 내부잔류응력이 생기게 되며, 이는 재료의 강도, 파괴특성에 많은 영향을 미치기 때문에 잔류응력의 감소기술이 중요시되고 있다. (중략)

Critical-speed Increase of Optical Disk by Applying Residual Stresses (잔류응력 부과에 의한 광디스크의 임계속도 증가)

  • Through the data transfer race in industry since 1990s, the operational speed of optical disk drive(ODD) becomes commonly over 10,000 rpm. Such high speed operation inevitably causes the vibration, which is also the disturbances in the read-write process of pick-up servo-controller. Generally the vibration disturbance problem can be solved by the vibration isolation using the rubber mount and the increase of robustness of the pick-up servo-controller. Optical disk itself has not been targeted for the vibration reduction, because it is manufactured under the standardized format. In this paper we focused on the increase of critical speed of optical disk, that is, the improvement of dynamic characteristics, with the control of residual stresses which are come from the injection molding process. To do this, first, the residual stresses induced from the injection molding process are calculated using finite element method. The major design parameters of the process conditions are flow rate and melt temperature, which control the residual stresses in optical disk. Second, the critical speed of optical disk is calculated with modal analysis considering residual stress distributions. It was found out that the critical speed can be improved by the control of operational parameters in the injection molding process.

  • In this study, residual stresses of the weldment were calculated by finite element analysis(FEA) and experiment. And, the crack closure behaviour and fatigue crack growth characteristics in field of residual stress of A106 Gr B steel pipe weldment were investigated under various stress ratio. Obtained results are as follows. I) $K_{op}$ was independent of $K_{max}$, and load ratio in fatigue crack growth. 2) In variation of load ratio, the scatter band of crack growth curve was reduced by half considering crack closure. and 3) Neglecting crack closure behaviour, actual fatigue crack growth rate can be underestimated' and Actual fatigue crack growth rate can be overestimated by $K_{res}$, in tensile residual stress field.

  • The residual stress on drilled shafts is often neglected. Neglect of the existence of locked-in loads in the shaft is the main reason for conclusions of instrumented tests which suggest that shaft resistance is smaller when the shaft is loaded in tension than when it is loaded in compression. A few researchers studied the residual stress and mentioned that the residual stress is influenced by either the physical expansion/contraction of concrete during the curing or site stratigraphy. In this study, field measurements of residual stress on test shafts were conducted and the factors influencing the residual stress were figured out.

  • The compressive residual stress and fatigue behavior of shot peened alloy 600 under a high-temperature environment is investigated in this study. Alloy 600 is used in the main parts of nuclear power plants, and the compressive residual stress induced by the shot peening process is considered to prevent SCC (stress corrosion cracking). To obtain practical results, the fatigue characteristics and compressive residual stress are evaluated under the actual operating temperature of a domestic nuclear power plant, as well as a high-temperature environment. The experimental results show that the peening effects are valid at a high temperature lower than approximately $538^{\circ}C$, which is the threshold temperature. The fatigue life was maintained at temperatures lower than $538^{\circ}C$, and the compressive residual stress at $538^{\circ}C$ was 68.2% of that at room temperature. The present results are expected to be used to obtain basic safety and reliability data.

Si 함유 DLC 필름의 탄성특성 평가

  • 박막의 탄성특성을 평가하는 방법으로 nano-indentation, Brillouin light scattering measurement, ultrasonic surface wave measurement, bulge test, vibration membrane method 등 여러 가지가 제시되어 왔다. 최근에는 탄성특성을 평가할 수 있는 간단한 방법으로 기판 식각 기법을 이용한 freehang, bridge 방법이 제시되었다. 이중에서 bridge 방법은 간단한 식각 기법을 이용하여 얇은 박막에서도 탄성 특성을 평가할 수 있는 방법으로 제시되었다. 그러나 식각 과정에서 발생하는 patch 부분의 under-cut으로 인해 정확한 bridge의 길이를 측정할 수 없게 되어 오차가 발생하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 bridge 방법에서 발생하는 오차를 줄이기 위한 방법으로, patch 부분에 etch-stop을 제작해 줌으로서 식각 과정에서 발생하는 under-cut을 효과적으로 제거시켰다. Etch-stop은 2장의 mask를 align key를 이용하여 제작하였다. 먼저 산화막이 형성되어 있는 Si 기판위에 mask 1을 이용하여 patch 부분을 lithography 작업하고, 습식 식각 공정을 한 뒤 DLC 필름을 증착시킨다. 다음으로 mask 2를 이용하여 bridge pattern을 제작하고, DLC 필름을 증착시킨 후 lift-off 기술과 산화막 등방식각 공정을 통해 bridge를 제작하였다. 이렇게 제작된 bridge를 통해 필름이 기판에 부착되기 위해 필요한 변형률을 측정하고, 독립적으로 측정된 필름의 잔류응력과 함께 박막의 응력-변형률 관계식에 적용시켜 biaxial elastic modulus, E/(1-v)를 구할 수 있었다. Sidl 첨가된 DLC 필름은 rf-PACVD 장비를 이용하여 증착하였다. 이때 전극과 플라즈마 사이의 바이어스 음전압은 -400V로 합성압력은 10mTorr로 고정하였다. 사용한 반응가스는 벤젠(C6H6)과 희석된 실렌(SiH4:2H=10:90)이며, 희석된 실렌의 첨가량을 조절하여 필름 내에 함유된 Si의 양을 조절하였다. 각각의 조건에서 증착시간을 조절하여 필름의 두께를 조절하였다. 필름의 잔류응력은 압축잔류 응력에 의해 발생한 필름/기판 복합체의 곡률을 laser 반사법을 이용하여 측정하고, 이 결과를 Brenner 등에 의해 유도된 식을 대입하여 계산하였다.
