Effect of Mixed Cultivation of Two Rice Cultivars on Rice Growth and Grain Yield (수도 품종의 혼식재배가 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • Competitive ability and response of grain yield in a mixed cropping of two cultivars having different agronomic traits were evaluated at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1984 and 1985. Competitive ability was higher in Indica x Japonica cultivar, Milyang 23, and tall statured cultivar, Samgang-byeo, than in Japonica type cultivar, Nacdongbyeo, short statured type cultivar, Taebaegbyeo, respectively. Compared to pure stand, more grain yield was recorded when mixture rates were over 50% in a seed volume for the mixing rate of high yielding cultivar in two cultivars, but low compared to pure cultivation of the cul-tivar having the higher yielding ability in two cultivars.

  • 벼, 바랭이, 톨페이스큐로부터 분리한 벼 도열병균에 대한 기주범위를 벼, 밀, 보리, 옥수수, 호밀, 귀리, 톨페스큐 등의 작물과 피, 왕바랭이, 바랭이, 강아지풀, 개기장 등의 잡초를 대상으로 실험하였다. 대부분의 균주들은 공시작물 모두와 잡초인 강아지풀에대하여 병원성을 나타내었다. 이러한 결과는 논 주면의 강아지풀이 벼 도열병균의 기주로 작용할 수 있음을 나타내었다.

Effects of Forage-Rice Cropping Systems on the Growth and Grain Quality of Early Maturing Rice Cultivars and Soil Chemical Properties in Paddy Fields in Southern Korea (사료작물-벼 작부체계가 조생종 벼의 생육과 미질 특성 및 토양의 화학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • To select rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars suitable for forage-rice double cropping system, the growth and grain quality of four early maturing rice cultivars (Joun, Jopyeong, Haedamssal, and Unkwang), and the chemical properties of soils were investigated under single- (fallow-rice) and forage-rice double-cropping systems in paddy fields in Miryang, southern Korea. The soil where two forage crops [Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and oat (Avena sativa L.)] were cultivated during winter had a slightly lower pH; an increase in total nitrogen (T-N), K, Ca, and Na contents; and a slight decrease in organic matter and available P2O5 contents, compared with the soil fallowed during winter. This shows that the chemical properties of paddy soils can be improved by winter forage cropping. At the heading stage, the culm length, panicle length, panicle number, and leaf color of all cultivars, except for Haedamssal, were generally higher under double-cropping than under single-cropping. For Haedamssal, the culm length and leaf color did not differ between the cropping systems, but the panicle length was slightly shortened and its panicle number increased under double-cropping. After harvest, the yield of milled rice decreased for all cultivars except Haedamssal, but increased in Haedamssal under double-cropping. The head rice rate was slightly higher under double cropping, particularly in Jopyeong and Haedamssal, than under single-cropping. The protein content of milled rice under double cropping was higher and its amylose content was similar or slightly lower compared to those of rice under single cropping, resulting in decreased Toyo values for rice under double-cropping. The pasting temperature did not differ significantly between the cropping systems. However, Haedamssal had a low pasting temperature but a high Toyo value under double cropping, compared to the other three cultivars, suggesting that its palatability is relatively high. Furthermore, panicle number increased and milled rice yield did not decrease, even under double cropping. Therefore, Haedamssal seems to be the best cultivar for paddy-based double cropping with forage crops.

A New High Amylose Rice Variety "Goamibyeo" (아밀로스함량이 높은 벼 품종 "고아미벼")

  • 'Goamibyeo', a mid-late maturing ecotype with high amylose content in kernels, was developed by the rice breeding team of National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station(NYAES) in 2000 and released in 2001. This variety was derived from the three way cross of Milyang 95//Kimcheonaengmi/$2^*Ilpumbyeo$ (in 1992 summer) through the pedigree breeding method and designated as 'Milyang 168' in 1997. The heading date of 'Goamibyeo' was Aug. 18 in ordinary season with culm length of 85 cm. However, 'Goamibyeo' showed susceptible to bacterial leaf blight, stripe virus and leaf blast disease. The amylose content of 'Goamibyeo' in milled rice kernels is about 26.7% with translucent and clear in chalkness. Thus, 'Goamibyeo' is expected to be used as a source grain for rice noodle industries. The milled rice yield potential of 'Goamibyeo' is about 5.38 MT/ha in local adaptability test of three years and it would be adaptable to Yeongnam plain of Korea.

  • Experiments were conducted to find out varietal responses of low temperature; 14$^{\circ}C$ and 12$^{\circ}C$. at rooting stage of the recommended rice varieties in middle boreal area. The varieties showed discoloration resistance are Sobaegbyeo. Baegambyeo. Hwaseongbyeo Chiagbyeo. Dobongbyeo and Daeseongbyeo. varieties wi th no root growing under low temperature are Taebaegbyeo. Samgangbyeo. Baegyangbyeo. Pungsanbyeo and Sangpungbyeo. The varieties showed dark green leaf color and high rooting rate are Sangpungbyeo. Chiagbyeo. Odaebyeo. Unbongbyeo. Dobongbyeo. Hwaseongbyeo. Sobaegbyeo and Daeseongbyeo. light-green of leaf color and low rate of rooting are Taebaegbyeo. Baegyangbyeo. Samgangbyeo and Nongbaegbyeo.

Quality Characteristics of Korean Domestic Wheat Flours Produced Under Double Cropping System on the Paddy Fields (남부지역의 논에서 이모작 작부체계를 통하여 생산한 국산밀의 품질 특성)

  • 본 연구에서는 남부지역 논의 이모작 작부체계로부터 생산한 국산밀의 품질 특성을 살펴보았다. 벼 및 이의 대체작물(검정콩, 참깨, 들깨)과 연계한 작부체계별로 생산된 국산밀의 제분율은 모든 토양에서 70% 이상으로 높았으며, 밀가루의 색상은 전작 작물의 종류에 따라 색도(L*, a*, b*) 값과 백색도 지수가 변화하였다. 특히, 흰색의 정도를 나타내는 L*값과 백색도는 벼 전작 토양에서 수확한 밀에서 높았다. 그러나 다량 및 미량 영양소 함량은 벼 전작물 토양에서 수확된 밀에서 낮았고 대체 작물을 전작한 토양에서 생산한 밀에서 대체로 높았다. 다량 영양소 중 P와 Mg의 함량과 미량 영양소 중 Zn와 Cu의 함량은 검정콩을 전작한 토양에서 수확한 밀에서 특히 높았다. 국산밀의 회분, 단백질, 아밀로스와 손상전분 함량은 각각 0.45-0.59%, 7.7-9.5%, 22.3-24.0%와 5.0-5.9%이다. 국산밀 중에 조경밀은 단백질 함량이 다른 품종에 비해 높고 질이 우수하여 제빵용으로 이용되고 있는데, 본 연구에서는 작부체계에 관계없이 전체적으로 10% 이하로 낮은 특성을 보였다. 그나마 검정콩을 전작한 토양에서 수확한 밀에서 9.45%이며, 벼를 전작한 토양에서는 8.0% 이하로 극히 낮았다. 또한 SDS-침전가도 검정콩 전작 토양에서 수확한 밀에서 높았으며, 회분 함량은 0.6% 이하로 1등급에 해당되었다. 논토양에서 참깨나 콩, 들깨 등의 벼 대체 작물들의 전작은 토양의 물리화학적 특성을 개선하고 제빵공정에 좀 더 유리한 고품질의 밀을 생산하는 데 이바지할 수 있음을 보여준다. 그러나 검정콩-밀 작부체계의 생육일수(344일)가 벼-밀(331일), 들깨-밀(337일), 참깨-밀(310일) 보다 길어 앞뒤 작물의 작기 연결성에 있어서 여유가 없었으며, 기상환경의 변화에 따라 검정콩의 수확시기가 늦어지게 되면 밀 파종 시기와 겹칠 수 있는 우려가 있다. 차후에 시비 기준을 달리한 조건에서 밀의 생산성 증대와 더불어 최고 품질의 밀을 생산할 수 있는 체계를 확립하고자 한다.

  • 'Jungmo 1012', a new japonica rice intermediate parent developed from a cross between 'Sambaegbyeo' having a good eating-quality and lodging resistance, and 'Ou329', was developed by the rice breeding team of Sangju Substation, National Institute of Crop Science, Rural Development Administration in 2010. This variety has about 120 days growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in southern mid-mountainous area of Korea. It has 78 cm culm length and tolerance to lodging. In reaction to biotic and abiotic stresses, it shows strong resistance to blast and viviparous germination, but is susceptible to bacterial blight, virus diseases, and insect pests. The milled rice of 'Jungmo 1012' exhibit translucent, relatively clear non-glutinous endosperm and medium short grain. It has a little lower amylose content of 18.2%, and higher protein content of 6.3%, and good palatability of cooked rice compared with 'Odaebyeo'. The milled rice yield performance of this variety is about 5.55 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. 'Jungmo 1012' will be adaptable to southern mid-mountainous of South Korea.

A New High Yielding Rice Variety with Multi-Disease Resistance, 'Keunseom' (중생 복합내병충성 초다수성 벼 '큰섬')

  • 'Keunseom', a new second generation Tongil-type rice variety (Oryza sativa L.), is a mid-maturing ecotype developed by the rice breeding team of Department of Functional Crop, NICS, RDA in 2006. This variety was originated from a cross between 'Dasanbyeo' and 'Namyeongbyeo' in 1996's summer season, which developed by pedigree breeding method. The pedigree of 'Keunseom' was YR18234-B-B-98-3-5-1, and it was designated 'Milyang202' in 2002. 'Keunseom' has tolerance to lodging, because it has short culm length as 77 cm. This variety is resistance to bacterial blight K1 race, rice stripe virus, rice dwarf virus, and leaf blast disease. Milled rice kernel of 'Keunseom' is a clean translucent with non-glutinous endosperm, and has good quality as it was clear in chalkness. The milled rice yield potential of 'Keunseom' was about 719 kg/10a at ordinary fertilizer level of local adaptability test. This cultivar would be adaptable to the mid and southern plain of Republic of Korea.
