A pulse detonation engine (PDE) requires high operating frequency greater than 100 Hz to get meaning thrust as a propulsion devise. Thus a PDE needs an ignition circuit operating precisely at high operating frequencies. In this paper AC(alternating current) and DC(direct current) types of ignition circuits were designed and compared. Each circuit was tested at operating frequencies from 16.66 to 100.00 Hz by measuring the input signal of each circuit and the voltage change in the primary coil of the transformer. Results show that the DC power circuit can attain a maximum error rate of 5.15% at higher operating frequencies, whereas the AC power circuit displays a negligible agreement with the operating signal at frequencies greater than 33.33 Hz. Therefore it is confirmed that DC-powered ignition circuit is preferable for the PDE operating at high frequencies.

In this paper, we present our recent progress in the LIPCA (Lightweight Piezo-Composite Actuator) application for actuation of a flapping wing device. The flapping device uses linkage system that can amplify the actuation displacement of LIPCA. The feathering mechanism is also designed and implemented such that the wing can rotate during flapping. The natural flapping-frequency of the device was about 9 Hz, where the maximum flapping angle was achieved. The flapping test under 4 Hz to 15 Hz flapping frequency was performed to investigate the flapping performance by measuring the produced lift and thrust. Maximum lift and thrust were produced when the flapping device was actuated at about the natural flapping-frequency.

In this study, the pumping performance of a piezoelectric valveless micropump is simulated. The micropump, which was developed in the previous work, is composed of a four-layer lightweight piezocomposite actuator, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pump chamber, and two diffusers. The piezoelectric domain, the fluid domain and the structural domain are coupled in the three-dimensional simulation. We used ANSYS for the piezoelectric and structural domains and ANSYS CFX for the fluid domain. The effects of driven frequency on the flow rate have been investigated by simulating the flow characteristics for 10 Hz and 40 Hz driven frequencies. The flow rates with respect to driven frequencies up to 300 Hz have been calculated.

A car horn serves a crucial safety role as a means of communication between drivers and a part that alerts pedestrians in advance. While previous studies have utilized finite element method and electric circuit model to simulate and analyze characteristics of the car horns, there remains a lack of research on design methods of a trumpet horn. This paper presents a design approach that predicts the operating frequency based on the acoustic reactance at the throat of the horn, once the vibrating part is determined. We deal with a horn combining both an exponential horn and a waveguide in the acoustic section, and confirm that the acoustic reactance at the horn throat measured by impedance tube experiment agrees well compared with the numerical result obtained using the finite element method. The resonance frequency of the car horn is predicted using the COMSOL Multiphysics finite element numerical analysis model, and the proposed design method is validated by measuring the operating frequency of the designed horn in a sound pressure experiment. As a result, the resonance measured in a semi-anechoic chamber environment by applying a DC voltage of 12 [V] excluding the holder occurs accurately within a few [Hz] of the design operating frequency. This paper discuss the design method of a trumpet horn from the perspective of the horn's acoustic reactance, and is expected to be useful for designing horn systems.
Interfacial evaluation and hydrophobicity of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composites were investigated for self-sensing and actuation. Contact resistance and resistivity were measured using gradient micro-specimens. The actuation of the composites in the electromagnetic field was studied with three wave functions, i.e., sine, triangle and square functions. Due tothe presence of hydrophobic domains on the heterogeneous surface, the static contact angle of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy nanocomposite wasabout $100^{\circ}$, which was rather lower than that for super-hydrophobicity. The dynamic contact angle showed the similar trend of static contact angle. Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composite was responded wellfor both self-sensing and actuation in electromagnetic field due to the intrinsic metal property of Ni-nanopowder. Displacement of the actuator of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composite was evaluated to obtain the maximum and the optimum performance using laser displacement sensor as functions of the wave type, frequency, and voltage. Actuation of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composites also increased as functions of applied frequency and voltage. Actuated strain increased more rapidly at sine wave with increasing voltage compared to those of triangle or rectangular waves.

This paper presents a new design for a piezoelectric energy harvester with the potential to harvest vibration energy over a wide range of excitation frequencies, particularly beyond the resonance frequency. The piezoelectric vibration energy harvester employs the concept of pole-zero cancellation occurring in a lever type anti-resonant system. The experimental results show that the proposed energy harvester can provide the potential possibility of a broadband piezoelectric vibration energy harvester.

Although piezoelectric materials such as PZT have been widely used as actuators in the field of active vibration suppression, the use of bare PZT as an actuator may cause some drawbacks such as critical breaks in the installation process, short circuits in the host material and low fatigue performance. The LIPCA-C2 (lightweight piezocomposite actuator) was developed to alleviate these problems. We implemented the LIPCA as an actuator to suppress the vibration of an aluminum cantilever beam with a tip mass. In our test, we used positive position feedback control algorithm. The filter frequency for this type of feedback should be tuned to the natural frequency of the target mode. The first three experimental natural frequencies of the aluminum cantilever beam agree well with the results of finite element analysis. The effectiveness of using the LIPCA as an actuator in active vibration suppression was investigated with respect to the time and frequency domains, and the experimental results show that LIPCAs with PPF control can significantly reduce the amplitude of forced vibrations and the settling time of free vibrations. For a case study, the forced vibration control of several beams with different thicknesses were performed.
Interfacial durability and electrical properties of CNT or ITO coated PVDF nanocomposites were investigated for self-sensor and micro actuator applications. Electrical resistivity of nanocomposites for the durability on interfacial adhesion was measured using four points method via fatigue test under cyclic loading. CNT/PVDF nanocomposite exhibited lower electrical resistivity and good self-sensing performance due to inherent electrical property. Durability on the interfacial adhesion was good for both CNT and ITO/PVDF nanocomposites. With static contact angle measurement, surface energy, work of adhesion, and spreading coefficient between either CNT or ITO and PVDF were obtained to verify the correlation with interfacial adhesion durability. The optimum actuation performance of CNT or ITO coated PVDF specimen was measured by the displacement change using laser displacement sensor with changing frequency and voltage. The displacement of actuated nanocomposites decreased with increasing frequency, whereas the displacement increased with voltage increment. Due to nanostructure and inherent electrical properties, CNT/PVDF nanocomposite exhibited better performance as self-sensor and micro actuator than ITO/PVDF case.

Acoustic responses to pressure oscillations in axisymmetric combustion chamber are numerically investigated to examine the qualitative trend of acoustic instability in liquid rocket engine. Chamber operating condition and excitation frequency of oscillating pressure are selected as exciting parameters of acoustic instability. Artificial perturbation is simulated by total-pressure oscillation with sine wave at chamber inlet. Many approximations and simplifications are introduced without losing the essence of acoustic pressure response. First, steady-state solution for each operating condition is obtained and next, transient analysis is conducted. Depending on operating condition and excitation frequency, the distinct response characteristics are brought. Weak-strength flames and high-frequency excitation tend to cause sensitive acoustic pressure response leading to unstable pressure field. These results are analyzed based on the correlation with acoustic pressure responses from the previous works adopting laminar flamelet model.
