  • This thesis examines the development and application of 'Health Monitoring System' which monitors periodically the state of a pipe of petrochemical plant by using magnetostrictive sensor technology. The existing guided-wave inspection methods cannot be applied to welding part inspection in pipe, and has a limit of precision when applied to general parts because of noise, reflected waves, and so on. This technology uses the information on displacement of a defect through periodic monitoring, which makes more precise inspection, and can be utilized very usefully in a petrochemical plant.

  • The temperature measurement of yen high temperature core melt is of importance in LAVA (Lower-plenum Arrested Vessel Attack) experiment in which gap formation between core melt and the reactor lower head, and the effect of the gap on thermal behavior are to be measured. The delay time of ultrasonic wavelets due to high temperature is suggested. As a first stage, a molten material temperature was measured up to 2300℃. Also, the optimization design of the ultrasonic temperature sensor with persistence at the high temperature was suggested in this paper. And the utilization of the theory suggested in the reference〔1〕and the efficiency of the developed system are certified by performing experiments. This sensor welded magnetostrictive element and tungsten element will be able to measure a temperature range of 3000℃ hereafter.

  • The main subject of this paper is to develop analytic method with which output power or sensitivity variations of a magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer can be estimated with no aid of experiments. After the bias magnetic field deployed over the patch is calculated using finite element analysis for magnetostatics, the representative value is extracted by averaging these field values. The operating point on the characteristic curve for magnetostriction is identified by this value and then the output performance is calculated from it. It is verified that the results from this simple model match well with those of its experimental version and some limits of this modeling technique are also considered.

  • An interferometric fiber-optic magnetic field sensor is constructed by bonding a Co-Fe-B metallic glass transducer developed here by the melt-spun method to a single mode fiber arm in the fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer and is tested. The bias field for the peak ac-sensitivity was observed near 0.97 Oe and the minimum detectable magnetic field was 3.9${\times}10^{-5}$ Oe(rms)/${\sqrt{Hz}}$ a 3 kHz. The output of the ac field sensor becomes saturated near the input signal level of 1 Oe(rms). The Co- Fe-B transducer exhibits peak response near 500 Hz.

  • A high efficiency small electromagnet (22 mm air gap and $40{\times}25mm^{2}$ core's cross section) suitable for measuring magnetostriction and magnetic anisotropy was biult. The magnet could be minaturized by reducing the measuring space and time. The excitation current of the electromagnet was supplied for only a few second of measuring time. Cooling system of the electromagnet could be eliminated since the dissipation energy was very small. An 0.5 T magnetic field was generated with 180 W power consumption. The values of magnetostriction and magnetic anisotropy were measured with a very sensitive capacitance cell with resolution of $10^{-8}$ and 1 nJ. The torque was calibrated using a soft magnetic ribbon's shape anisotropy.

  • Saturation rnagnetostriction and rnagnetoelastic properties of amorphous $Fe_{82}B_{18-x}Al_{x}$ and $Fe_{80}B_{20-x}Al_{x}$ alloys have been studied. Saturation magnetostriction of the alloys has increased according to the increase of AI content. The amorphous $Fe_{82}B_{14}Al_{4}$ alloy shows the highest saturation magnetostriction of 45 ppm among the alloy systems. The ratio of maximum magnetic induction change to tensile stress of this alloy is about $0.026\;T.mm^{2}/N$, and it is considered to be applicable for a high resolution mechanical sensor.

  • Ultrasonic transmitter used for scale prevention in boiler or heat exchanger is composed of the magnetostrictive material which transforms electric energy into ultrasonic wave and the horn which amplifies generated ultrasonic wave and transfers it into medium loaded. In this paper, we have performed the shape design for magnetostrictive material and analyzed a few type of horns which amplify generated ultrasonic wave and found each solution theoretically. Final length of the horn has been determined by measuring the sound pressure in medium between theoretical value and experience data. At last we have given the results of our study for the effects of ultrasonic wave irradiated by manufactured ultrasonic transmitter on preventing scale deposition on test pipe under the similar condition to boiler.

  • The sensor configuration of the magnetostrictive guided wave system can be described as a single continuous transducing element which makes it difficult to separate the individual modes from the reflected signal. In this work we develop the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor, and to estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize defects. The reflection coefficients are calculated using the modal energies of the separated mode. Results from experimental results on a carbon steel pipe are presented, which show that the accurate and quantitative defect characterization could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • The sensor configuration of the magnetostrictive guided wave system can be described as a single continuous transducing element which makes it difficult to separate the individual modes from the reflected signal. In this work we develop the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform based on the maximum likelihood estimation, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor, and estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize defects. Simulation results on a carbon steel pipe are presented, which show the accurate mode separation and more discernible time-frequency representation could become enabled using the proposed technique.
