  • Pompe disease is a rare lysosomal glycogen storage disorder caused by a total or partial deficiency of the acid ${\alpha}$-glucosidase (GAA) enzyme due to the GAA gene mutations. The classic infantile form of Pompe disease is a rapidly progressive multi-organ disease with hypotonia, generalized muscle weakness, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, usually leading to death in the first 2 years of life. Enzyme replacement therapy with recombinant human GAA has been shown to be effective and subsequently yielded promising results. Here, we present clinical and genetic characteristics of three Korean non-classic infantile Pompe patients, and the short term efficacy of enzyme replacement therapy. Considering that enzyme replacement therapy can change the natural course of infantile Pompe disease, early diagnosis and early initiation of treatment is critical to improving patient outcomes.

  • Chronic patients and staffs in healthcare facilities cannot avoid long-term stays indoors. Therefore, they need to get adequate amounts of sunlight to prevent diseases caused by vitamin D deficiency. This is a case study on the advanced daylighting systems installed to healthcare facilities for therapeutic environments as serving natural light therapy and a pleasant atmosphere. This paper shows daylighting devices that overcome the structural limits of architectural design solutions for inducing natural light. This study presents appropriate daylighting technologies to the purpose and types of healthcare facilities by analyzing therapeutic environmental factors. Natural light delivered through daylighting devices help directly patients recover. In addition, it can improve healthcare providers' performance and productivity, and reduce their errors, thereby creating therapeutic environments for patients, indirectly. Excellent color rendering of solar illumination is also a powerful tool for navigation and wayfinding in the buildings, and for aesthetic treatment in dental office. Furthermore, daylighting systems are streamlined and require the least material and space to attract sunlight up to the deeper inside. But because of expensive cost, they have not yet been widespread. Though daylighting devices are typically more expensive than artificial illuminations to install, the running cost savings can compensate for the initial installation cost. With the development of technology in the future, the market price of them is expected to be formed properly.

  • The North Korean medical laws are consisted of 'People's Health Act' and 'Medical Act' in the peak of the North Korean constitutional law. Before the legislation of 'People's Health Act', a number of medical laws and regulations existed. But, at present, there is no information about its amendment and effectiveness. 'People's Health Act' legislated in 1980 declared fundamental principles and policies of the North Korean health care system. 'Medical Act' legislated in 1997 is the basic law among the North Korean medical laws. It presented the goals and fundamental principles of the North Korean health care, and then regulated the basics about 'Tests and Diagnosis', 'Medical Treatment', and 'Medical Appraisal'. 'Medical Act' of North Korea was established later than South Korea, and its provisions is smaller in number. And there are lots of abstract and declaratory provisions compare with South Korean 'Medical Act'. Especially there is no provision about the kind and requirements of medical personnel and medical institutions, so it is hard to grasp the North Korean health care system at once. Regarding the medical treatment, there are many similar contents between the North and South Korean 'Medical Act'. But, the provisions, such as regarding mixing the new medicine and the korean traditional medicine, encouraging natural therapies in medical treatment, and informing the patient's protector of bad diagnostic result if there is concern to have a bad influence on patient, are different from the South Korean 'Medical Act'.

  • Burkholderia cepacia is a Gram-negative aerobic bacillus known to cause opportunistic infections in the immune-compromised hosts. This microorganism is strongly virulent and causes a necrotising invasive infection that may lead to death. As B. cepacia is highly resistant to various antimicrobials, combination antimicrobial therapy must be used instead of monotherapy. We report a successful treatment of lung abscess that was naturally caused by B. cepacia in a healthy child, through combination antimicrobial therapy of meropenem and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and operative management.

  • Purpose: This study is to examine the effect of Auricular Acupressure Therapy on smoking cessation for residents in a community. Method: Design was randomized one-group pretest-posttest design. Samples were total 26 residents in a community. Measures were nicotine dependency scale and count of smoking cigarette. Auricular Acupressure Therapy, experimental treatment was applied for 2 weeks, 2 times/week, 3 day/time. Data were collected from July 2005 to October 2005. Data were analyzed using SPSS PC+ 12 version. Descriptive statistics was used for analysis of general characteristics in sample, and paired t-test was used to analysis the effect of Auricular Acupressure Therapy. Results: After receiving the Auricular Acupressure Therapy, nicotine dependency and count of smoking cigarette were significantly decreased (t=22.730, p=.000; t=-37.005, p=.000). Conclusion: Auricular Acupressure Therapy can be a better effective primary nursing intervention on smoking cessation for residents in a community through reverification by a study of repetition.
