  • This research has carried out to make a data base of taxonomic research. That Data base explains about spawning behavior, egg development, and morphologic development of variable sabretooth blenny. Fertilized egg was demersal egg which is white and opaque. The number of oil glouble were 10~11, and the size of egg was 0.90~1.43 mm (average rate $1.11{\pm}0.23mm$, n=10). Breeding water temperature was $25.5{\sim}28.5^{\circ}C$ (average rate $27.0^{\circ}C$), and salinity was 32.5~33.5‰ (average rate 33.0‰). After 24 hours from 2 cells, the process of egg development was reached to Blastula stage. Moreover, after 330 hours from 2 cells, nostrils and eyes were formed. Egg membrane was pierced by the head, and the hatch began. After the hatch, postlarvae had 2.59~3.02 mm (average rate $2.81{\pm}0.25mm$, n=5) of whole length, and the mouth and anus were opened. Yolk sac and oil glouble were absorbed. After three days from hatch, prelarvae were 3.02~3.07mm(average rate $3.04{\pm}0.04mm$) of whole length, and caudal fin was grown with round shape. After 13 days from hatch, prelarvae had 3.04~3.20 mm (average rate $3.12{\pm}0.11mm$) of whole length, and they could eat food with upper jaw and bottom jaw.

  • Morphology and distribution of the minute tubercles projected on the skin surface of larvae with its development was observed in the Korean bitterling, Acheilognathus koreensis, known as an endemic freshwater fish. The epidermis of the larvae consisted of a thin single layer, having smaller basophilic flat or round-flattened basal cells. In between the single cell layer, two or three layers were added and they consisted mainly of large epidermal cells just above basal cells. These large unicellular epidermal cells were mainly scale-shaped and rarely cone-shaped, and do not give any histochemical tests for mucosubstances. They were present in anterior region and most region of yolk sac. Whereas, vestigial epidermal cells were distributed in the body region and the caudal fin-fold region. These two kinds of epidermal cells, called minute tubercles, increased in number and height from Just to 8 days after hatching, but as the larvae develop gradually, they became to reduce. At 31days after hatching of free swimming stage and absolute absorption stage of the yolk sac, the minute tubercles did not exist on the whole skin of the larvae.

  • Gonadal development, reproductive cycle and embryonic development of the marbled rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus were investigated histologically. A total of 1,035 specimens were collected from the Cheju Island from July of 1992 to May of 1996. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) in female reached the maximum during October to March, thereafter, the values decreased from Norvember to April. GSI in male reached the maximum in September (before one to three months of the female's maximum), thereafter, the values rapidly decreased from October to December. The annual reproductive cycle can be divided into five stages in female and four stages in male: females, Growing(June to September), Mature(September to February), Ripe and copulation(October to March), Gestation and parturition(November to April), Degenerative and resting(December to May); in males, Growing(April to July), Mature(August to November), Ripe and copulation(September to December), and Degenerstive and resting(November to March). Size frequency distribution of eggs and larvae showed non-synchrony. Maternal larvae parturition occurred one or two time during November to April. Mean length of the larvae parturition was 3.5 mm. Mean number of eggs and maternal larvae for the 15 cm minimum class of female was 58,377, and fecundity increased with the increase of total length and body weight.

  • We examined the food habits of larval Acanthogobius flavimanus using 260 specimens collected from February to April 2011 in the Nakdong River estuary, Korea. We found that larval A. flavimanus are carnivorous, feeding mainly on copepods and tintinnids. Their diet also included small quantities of larval polychaetes, macrostomids, larval bivalves, rotifers, barnacles, diatoms and unidentified materials. To assess ontogenetic changes in diet composition, the larvae were separated into three developmental stages: preflexion (<7 mmNL), flexion (7~9 mmNL), and postflexion (>9 mmNL). The preflexion group frequently preyed on tintinnids. But as the larvae of A. flavimanus grew, the consumption of copepods for flexion group, and polychaetes for postflexion group, increased respectively. The larvae of A. flavimanus showed one peak for feeding incidence at dusk, but the mean number of preys per individual was high until midnight.

  • This study aimed to examine the early life history of Trident goby (Tridentiger brevispinis) by observing their egg development and juvenile fish morphology. The average size of mature eggs was 1.13~1.41 (1.30±0.07) mm (n=30), and 0.70~0.86 (0.79±0.04) mm (n=30) in long diameter and short diameter, respectively. The incubation period at 24±1℃ ranged from 167~228 h. The newly hatched larvae measured 2.31~2.78 (2.51±0.18) mm (n=30) in total length (TL), and their mouth and anus were not yet open. At 3 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae reached 2.84~3.10 (2.98±0.10) mm in TL, where in their yolk absorption was complete and their mouths began to open. At 19 days after hatching, the larvae reached the flexion stage, measuring 4.02~4.62 (4.36±0.19) mm in TL. The tip of their notochord was bent upward. At 30 days post-hatching, the larvae reached the postflexion stage, measuring between 5.04~6.36 (5.76±0.51) mm in TL, with the tip of the caudal fin bent at 45°. After 54 days, the larvae had reached the juvenile stage, measuring between 7.43~9.84 (8.48±0.90) mm in TL, and were differentiated by their constant number of fins (6 first dorsal, 12 second dorsal, 11 anal, and 10 ventral fins). This study found that T. brevispinis had larger fertilized eggs and a greater number of myotomes in hatching larva than similar species. Additionally, the distribution of melanophores in T. brevispinis was distinct from that in other similar species, making it easy to distinguish them morphologically.

  • This study investigated the early life history of Hemibarbus labeo from in Wicheon, stream Nakdonggang-River, and compared their characteristics with closely related species. In April 2021, egg formation and development of autonomous fish were observed in fertilized eggs collected at four spawning sites. The size of the fertilized egg was 1.93~2.39 (average 2.22±0.15, n=30) mm. The water temperature was 22.2~24.1°C, and the hatching time took 109~115 hours. Newly after hatching, the total length of the yolk-sac larvae was 7.50~8.80 (average 7.99±0.46) mm, and the mouth and anus did not develop and had difficulty in being yolk. 6 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae were fed with a total length of 9.49~10.2 (9.78±0.23, n=30) mm. 10 days after hatching, the flexion larvae was 9.97~11.9 (10.7±0.72, n=30) mm in total length, and the tail of the vertebrae began to bend. 20 days after hatching, the postflexion larvae was 12.6~15.2 (13.9±0.77, n=30) mm in total length, and the tailbone was completely bent to 45°. 29 days after hatching, the total length of the juvenile was 16.9~19.8 (18.1±0.91, n=30) mm, and the number of fins reached an integer with 10 dorsal fins, 9 anal fins, and 7 ventral fins. The distribution of melanophore, such as the head, the center of the body, and the upper part of the fin, was different from that of the allied species during the postflexion larvae period, so the morphological characteristics could be distinguished.

  • In this study, we carried out an experiment for estimation the larval digestibility in aspects which digestive enzymatic activities and nutrition of the rotifers, Brachionus rotundiformis. Thus we enhanced the digestive enzymatic activity through the addition of starch for the increase of digestibility of rotifer (starch-rotifer), and compared with the feed efficiency through rearing of the olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus used rotifer lipid-enriched with Algamac $2000^{(R)}$ (CE-rotifer). The digestive enzyme activities (except for TG-lipase), total protein contents, total essential amino acid, essential amino acids (methionin and phenylalanine) of starch-rotifer (the rotifer used a starch as additive, and enriched not) was assayed significantly higher than CE-rotifer (P<0.05). And total lipid, lipid classes (except for sterol) and fatty acids as DHA and EPA showed higher in CE-rotifer than starch-rotifer (P<0.05). But, sterol contents and ST/TG ratio were shown significantly higher in starch-rotifer (P<0.05). The flounder larvae supplied the two rotifers showed standard length and body weight that not significantly differed with ranges $3.72{\sim}3.79\;mm$ and $32.9{\sim}37.8\;mg$/larva on 6 days after hatching (DAH), respectively (P>0.05). However, these of 12 DAH showed the values of significantly higher to $5.94{\pm}0.249\;mm$, $144.0{\pm}23.86\;mg$/larva and $26.2{\pm}12.13%$ in standard length, body weight and survival in CE-flounder than that of starch-flounder (P<0.05). The hydrolytic enzymatic activities of flounder larvae severally supplied the two rotifers showed the significantly higher activities in acidic -amylase, neutral -amylase, TG-lipase, lysozyme and acidic phosphatase in starch-flounder on 5 DAH (P<0.05). But neutral $\alpha$-amylase, three proteases and two phosphatases of CE-flounder on 11 DAH showed the significantly higher activities than that of starch-flounder (P<0.05). Therefore, for the flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus larvae just depleted yolk was more beneficial to supply the feed, rotifer, enhanced the digestibility than to supply the feed lipid-enriched for aspect of larval digestibility up to 6 DAH, thereafter nutrition of absorption due to the development of digestive organs suggested that enrichment effect appeared with larval somatic growth. Consequently, investigation more detailed about the larval digestive physiological and nutritional requirement variations after 6 DAH will be necessary, thereafter.
