Objectives : Insomnia may be one of the risk factor for suicidal ideation, but little is known about the mechanism by which sleep disturbances confer risk for suicide. The aim of this study was to investigate examine whether insomnia severity would be associated with resilience and suicidal ideation, and whether resilience would mediate the relationship between insomnia and suicidal ideation. Methods : A total of 432 community-dwelling adults(227 male, 205 female,) completed the self-report questionnaire that covered basic socio-demographic data. To assess the psychological variables, the following instruments were applied: Insomnia Severity Index(ISI), Korean Version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(K-CD-RISC), Beck Hopelessness Scale(BHOP) and Scale for Suicidal Ideation(SSI-Beck). People with an ISI score of 8 or higher were defined as insomnia. Results : Greater insomnia symptom severity was significantly associated with higher level of suicidal ideation and lower level of resilience, adjusting for hopelessness, age, sex, presence of family members living together, and household income. Additional analysis revealed that disturbance of sleep initiation and disturbance of sleep maintenance were significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Mediation analyses revealed that resilience significantly accounted for the relationship between insomnia symptom severity and suicidal ideation. Conclusions : These findings suggest that the evaluation and control of insomnia and resilience may be needed to reduce the risk of suicide.
The purpose of this study was to validate the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale(SIDAS) which can measure the severity of suicidal ideation in a sample of 399 Korean adults. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted for two weeks from July 2020 to August 2020. First, there were differences in SIDAS scores among groups divided by gender, residence status, depression and anxiety symptoms, suicidal ideation, suicidal plan, suicidal preparation, and suicidal attempt. Second, correlations between SIDAS, C-SSRS suicidal ideation intensity question(3 items), and the Rosenberg Self-efficacy (RSE) were examined to confirm the validity of SIDAS. As a result, correlations between the SIDAS and suicidal ideation intesity items of C-SSRS were significant in all items, while correlations between the SIDAS and RSE items were negative or insignificant. Third, as a result of the confirmatory factor analysis of SIDAS on all respondents and respondents with suicidal ideation, a single factor structure was appropriate for both groups. Internal consistency of SIDAS was also good. Lastly, as a result of identifying the variables affecting the suicidal plan over the past year, controllability and age were identified as significant predictive variables. SIDAS which was designed to be administered through web, can be appropriately used in Korea. It was confirmed that SIDAS is a reliable and valid suicidal ideation scale which is applicable to adults in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting suicidal ideation in psychiatric inpatients. A total of 186 psychiatric inpatients participated in the study. Data were analyzed by frequencies, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS WIN 18.0. Suicidal ideation showed significant differences according to marital status, diagnosis, and previous suicide attempt history. There were significant correlations among depression, self-esteem, spirituality and suicidal ideation. Depression and spirituality were identified as predictors affecting suicidal ideation. The regression model explained 52.4% of suicidal ideation. As a result, intervention program for decreasing depression and improving spirituality is essential to decrease suicidal ideation in psychiatric inpatients.
The purpose of this study was to identify suicidal ideation and related factors of elderly people with diabetes mellitus living alone in rural area. A descriptive study design was used. The participants were 466 elderly people, aged 65 years and over, and diagnosed with diabetes mellitus living at O province in South Korea. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, χ2-test, and logistic regression analysis with SPSS statistics 26.0 program. The results of the analysis showed that the suicidal ideation rate of the subjects was 27.3%, and the subjects showed significant differences in suicidal ideation as Cognitive function was lower (t=-4.23, p<.001), Depression(t=9.56, p<.001) and Loneliness (t=4.88, p<.001) were higher. Related Factors of suicidal ideation were Cognitive function (OR=0.86, p<.001), Depression (OR=1.18, p<.001) and Loneliness (OR=1.17, p=.001). These variables explained 32.2% of suicidal ideation. Therefore, in order to reduce suicide ideation of the elderly with diabetes mellitus living alone in rural areas, intervention that can improve Cognitive function, Depression, and Loneliness is needed.
This study investigated the mediating effects of depression on the relationship between perceived problem solving ability and suicidal ideation. 548 college students were examined with PSI(Problem Solving Inventory), BDI(Beck Depression Inventory) and SSI(Scale for Suicidal Ideation). To explore the relationship among these variables, correlation analysis was undertaken. Regression analysis was then applied to test the mediating effects of depression. In the results, perceived problem solving ability, depression and suicidal ideation were correlated positively. Depression operated as a factor to mediate between the perceived problem solving ability and suicidal ideation. This mean that perceived problem solving ability impact indirectly, rather than directly, on suicidal ideation. These results suggest the importance of psychological intervention to improve depression and perceived problem solving ability that affect suicidal ideation.
This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of hope between stress and suicidal ideation of adolescents. For the study, 399 adolescents were surveyed at 10 cities of Korea from May to August in 2010. Main results of the study were in the followings. First, it was found out that stress of adolescents was positively correlated with suicidal ideation, hope was negatively correlated with suicidal ideation, and stress influenced more suicidal ideation than hope. Second, suicidal ideation of adolescents tended to be low, stress was in the middle level, and agency and pathways thinking of hope was higher than middle level. Third, it was proved that agency and pathways thinking of hope was mediated between stress and suicidal ideation of adolescents. Lastly, for the female adolescents living in the metropolitan and large cities, only agency thinking of hope was mediated but pathways thinking was not mediated. Policy implications for preventing and decreasing adolescent's suicide were suggested.

Objectives:This study was aimed at examining the emotional predictors of adolescent suicidal ideas in a community. Methods:The subjects were 1909 middle and high school students(936 males, 973 females) in Koyang-shi. We evaluated all subjects using Center for Epidemiologic Study for Depression(CES-D), Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale(RCMAS), Korean-Youth Self Report(K-YSR), Psychological Self-1 of Offer's Self Image Questionnaire(PS-1 of OSIQ) and Suicide Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ). We compared the PS-1 of OSIQ scores of Anxious-depressive group(above cut-off points of CES-D, RCMAS and K-YSR) to those of control group, and conducted correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis to all subjects. Results:The number of anxious-depressive group was 126(6.58%) among 1909 subjects with significant gender difference(M:F ratio 1:1.5). Both PS-1 of OSIQ and SIQ scores were significantly higher in Anxious-depressive group than in control group. There were significant correlations among the scales:CES-D, RCMAS, A/D of K-YSR, PS-1 of OSIQ and SIQ. Through stepwise multiple regression analysis, we found that significant predictors of suicidal idea were CES-D, RCMAS and A/D of K-YSR. Conclusion:Anxious-depressive adolescents may be the high-risk group for suicidality and need preventive interventions of suicidality in a community.

Objectives : This study was done to develop Korean form of Reynolds' SIQ-JR(Suicidal Ideational Questionnaire-Junior). Through this study we evaluated reliability and validity of Korean form SIQ-JR. Methods : Subjects were 1,160 middle and high school students and 114 adolescent psychiatric patients. SIQ-JR and 8 self-reporting scales highly related with suicidal ideation and suicide behaviors were applied to them. Results : In reliability aspect of Korean form of SIQ-JR, internal consistency, test-retest reliability and item-total correlation were statistically significant results. In factor analysis, concerning about other person was extracted as a indepenedent factor. This results reflect our cultural characteristics. There were statistical differences of SIQ-JR scores in groups by sex and age. Clinical group showed significantly(P<0.01) higher scores than general population. Among the 8 suicidal relating scales, depression(r=0.42), aggression(r=0.36), trait anxiety(r=0.35), and anger-in(r=0.31) were highly related with suicidal ideation but impulsivity and hopelessness were not significantly related with suicidal ideation. Conclusion : Korean form of SIQ-JR was useful instrument in reliability and validity. We hope that this instrument widely used in school mental health, community psychiatry and clinical setting for screening tool.
This study aimed to identify demographic variables(gender, age group, occupation, living arrangement, economic level, respiratory and chronic diseases, previous medical history), COVID-19 variables(COVID-19 prevention behavior, frequent use of media to obtain COVID-19 information), and psychological behavioral variables(depression, anxiety, loneliness, and increased drinking). From February to March 2021, an online survey of adults was conducted, and a total of 1,434 data were used for analysis. 260 out of 1,434 people were confirmed to have suicide ideation, the prevalence of suicide ideation among adults during the COVID-19 was 18.1%. Logistic regression analyses indicated elevated odds of suicidal ideation among individuals in their 20s and 30s, those living alone, exhibiting fewer COVID-19 preventive behaviors, consuming COVID-19 information more frequently through media, and reporting higher levels of loneliness. Furthermore, within the group experiencing depression, anxiety, and increased drinking, greater levels of these factors correlated with higher odds of suicidal ideation. Based on the results, implications and significance of the study were discussed.

This study examined the associations of physical activity by intensity with depression and suicidal thoughts among middle school students in South Korea. This study used data from the Survey of Korean Youth Health Risk Behavior. The samples were middle school students (Total 37,420). Logistic regression analysis were used. For depression, 33% of males and 43% of females felt depressed, whereas 17.8% of males and 27.7% of females experienced suicidal thoughts. In regression, both moderate physical activity and vigorous physical activity were associated significantly with a lower incidence of depression. In suicidal thoughts, moderate physical activity was associated with a lower incidence of suicidal thoughts among female students. In path analysis, vigorous physical activity had a direct and indirect effect on depression and suicidal thoughts. Physical activity is a potential mediator in decreasing depression and suicidal thoughts among middle school students.
