  • This experiment was aimed to investigate the growth and yield responses of hydroponically grown cucumber as affected by cultural containers and substrates using perlite and mixtures with perlite. Containers used in this experiment were bed and box made of styrofoam, PE film and Wagner pot and substrates used were perlite, peatmoss, rice hull and carbonized rice hull. The results obtained were as follows : Based on the growth and yield responses determined from the leaf area and total fruit weight, bed and box made of styrofoam was considered the best containers among tested for cucumber hydroponics. Recommendable substrates for hydroponically grown cucumber using perlite were evaluated in the order of perlite, perlite with rice hull and perlite with carbonized rice hull in styrofoam bed and box. Increase in marketable yield and decrease in abnormal fruits was observed in the mixed substrates with rice hull or carbonized rice hull when compared to perlite single media.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop ideal substrates for the production of good quality tomatoes in bag culture system and also to improve media with low or no environmental pollution by blending and mixing artificial substrate including peatmoss, perlite, vermiculite, granular rockwool, polyphenol resin foam, bark, and smoked rice hull. The highly efficient media proved by experiments were vermiculite, smoked rice hull, polyphenol resin foam, granular rockwool, and perlite, which showed good results in the early growth as well as the marketable yield of tomato in the bag culture. Tomato plants grown in the media mixed with peatmoss, vermiculite and granular rockwool at the ratio of 3 : 1 : 1(by volume) showed the highest marketable yield, and the next at the ratio of 2 : 1 : 1. The perlite-granular rockwool mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 1 : 4, and the peatmoss vermiculite mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 3 : 2, seemed to be promising media for bag culture.

Management of Dripper Position in Tomato Perlite Bag Culture (토마토 펄라이트 자루재배에서의 점적핀 위치 관리)

  • The appropriate dripper position in perlite bag was investigated for tomato production. Drippers were laid at 5(F5), 15cm (F15) away from the stem base or 5cm at first and then moved to 15cm later (M5-15). Roots were developed more near the stem base in F5, while less in F15. Roots were distributed evenly in M5-15. In vertical distribution of water in perlite bag, water content was higher as it went deeper with the variation by dripper positions. Yield was high in F15 and low in F5. In conclusion the position of dripper is the best at 15cm from the stem base in perlite bag culture in view of root distribution and yield.

  • 양액재배는 토양재배에서 오는 다양한 문제점들을 탈피하고자 하는 농민의 자구책이기도 하지만 유리온실과 마찬가지로 대부분의 플라스틱 온실에서도 적용할 수 있는 적절한 재배시스템, 전용양액 및 배지, 양액재배 기술의 개발 또는 실용화가 미흡한 실정이어서 양액재배 확대보급에 제한요인이 되고 있다. 본 실험은 배수성과 통기성이 우수한 배지로서 남부지방에서 이용이 확대되고 있는 perlite와 우리 주위에서 구입이 용이한 왕겨, 훈탁 등의 혼합배지를 이용하여 스티로폼 베드 및 박스재배, 플라스틱 자루재배, 포트재배 등의 재배시 재배용기와 배지의 종류에 따른 양액재배 오이의 생육 및 수량 반응성을 살펴보고, 오이의 양액재배시 기초자료로 활용하고자 수행하였다.   • Daily last time of irrigation in perlite bag culture was investigated to get high water use efficiency (WUE) and fertilizer use efficiency (FUE) and also sustain high productivity for tomato. The water content in the substrate was higher as the last time of irrigation was later from 4 to 1hour before sunset. The growth were not significantly different in all treatments. The marketable yield was the highest in treatments of 1 or 2hours before sunset and the lowest in treatment of 4hours. In the result to investigate for 128days WUE and FUE were the lowest in treatment of 1hour before sunset but the highest in treatment of 3hours before sunset. In the conclusion, it looks best to end irrigation 2~3hours before sunset in the aspects of plant growth, yield, WUE, and FUE.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the effects of number of branches per pot on the growth and yield in long term bag-culture of sweet pepper. Two plants were grown in pot with four, six, and eight branches. The results are summarized as the followings : 1. Plant height, stem diameter, leaf dry weight, root dry weight, and stem dry weight did not significantly differ among treatments, while the number of leaves and leaf area were the greatest In the treatment with eight branches per pot. 2. Although fruit length was not influenced by the number of branches per pot, fruit diameter and fruit weight were greater with four branches per pot. The yield of the four branches was 124.5ton/ha, which was not significantly different from the yield of the eight branches, 113.4ton/ha. Considering the average fruit weight, fruit quality, and labor saving, four branches per pot appears to be appropriate. 3. Although the yield of eight branches per pot during the first five months was higher, however, four branches per pot should be recommended for the long term bag- culture of sweet pepper because the yield of the four branches from April, which is the middle stage of growth to the final harvest was higher than the yields of the others.

Appropriate Sensor Height in an Irrigation Management System by Drainage Level Sensor for Perlite Bag Culture of Cucumber and Paprika (오이와 착색단고추의 펄라이트자루재배시 배액전극제어법에서의 적정 배액전극높이 구명)

  • An experiment was conducted to test different heights of drainage level sensors in an irrigation management system for perlite bag culture of cucumber and paprika. The sensors were placed at 4, 8, 12, and 16 mm from the bottom of the container. Both cucumber and paprika did not show any significant difference in growth and yield among the treatments. However, placing the sensor at 4 mm seemed to be the best in order to prevent over-supply of water at the beginning of the day.

  • The experiment was implemented to introduce the drainage electrode irrigation system as early as possible after transplanting in order to save the nutrient solution in a convenient way. Drainage electrode irrigation method was introduced 15, 19 or 22 days after transplanting after irrigation was firstly controlled by time clock. Time clock method was also treated as a control plot. Drainage electrode method could be adopted from 15 days after transplanting, 15 days earlier than the present introducing time. The growth and yield was better in treatments with drainage electrode method. Water and fertilizer use efficiency were the highest in the treatment of 15 days, the lowest in time clock treatment.

Mulching Cultivation Method and Harvesting Implement of Pleurotus ostreatus (느타리버섯 멀칭재배 방법과 수확도구)

  • The study which was conducted to determine the effects of the polyethylene film on the culture of Pleurotus ostreatus is summarized in the following: 1) The fresh weight of Pleurotus ostreatus cultured by the box culture method mulching with black polyethylene film was 2,237g/box and, 2,028g/box by white polyethylene film mulching, and 1,695g/box at the conventional culture which was by 24.2% and 16.4% higher than that of the conventional culture.2) The fresh weight of P. ostreatus cultured by the shelf culture method mulching with the black polyethylene film was 17.4kg/m$^2$ at the white polyethylene film culture, 14.6kg/m$^2$ at the conventional culture which was by 16.2%, 7.5% higher than that of the conventional culture. 3) The best shape appearance in terms of the diameter in P. ostreatus was 5~30mm and the intervals were 10cm respectively. 4) The black polyethylene film mulching in P. ostreatus observed in good protection against Pseudomonas spp., Trichoderma, or mushroom flies. 5) The black polyethylene film mulching method for the culture of P. ostreatus was much better than that of the shelf-culture, box-culture or the sack culture in terms of total yield and quality. 6) The length of harvesting implement of P. ostreatus was suitable for 45~120cm in order to use on the harvest of the mulching.

  • Irrigation management methods controlled by integrated solar radiation (ISR) or drainage level sensor were evaluated in rockwool or coir bag culture as tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production system. Substrate water content and drainage percentage were more stable in the drainage level sensor method than in the ISR method regardless of substrate type. Total yield and marketable yield were high in the drainage level sensor method, but not between substrates in the same irrigation management method. Sugar content was affected more by the substrate type than irrigation method. The drainage level sensor method was elucidated to be better than the ISR method regardless of substrate type.
