  • 자동차용 도료의 도장 품질은 미려한 외관과 더불어 내후성, 내약품성, 방청성, 내Chipping성등 물리화학적인 물성이 우수해야 한다. 특히 최근에는 이러한 도장품질과 더불어 지구환경 보호 및 도장 Cost 절감과 관련된 기술개발 요구가 고조되고 있으며, 산성비등의 환경오염 물질에 대한 저항성 및 내Scratch성 향상을 위한 기술개발 노력이 경주되고 있으며, 본 총설에는 자동차 도료 system즉 하도, 중도, 상도등의 상세한 도막별 특성에 관한 기술 내용 설명을 피하고, 도장품질 향상과 지구환경 보호 측면에서의 자동차도료 개발현황 및 향후 방향에 대하여 설명하고자 한다.

  • The most upcoming technical issue of automotive coating is the compact coating process. Pre-primed coating is the outstanding technology eliminating electro-deposition and primer coating process. The main properties of pre-primed coating for automotive are flexibility, corrosion resistance, and weldability. Therefore, we synthesized the conventional polyester, elastomeric polyester and polyvinylidene fluoride resins and evaluated their properties to use as weldable pre-primed automotive coatings. As the results of flexibility and curing behavior, the elastomeric polyester coating was most appropriate to use for the pre-primed automotive coatings.

An Experimental Study on the Drying Characteristics of Automotive Paint Using Heating Panels and Hot Air (가열패널과 열풍을 이용한 자동차용 도료의 건조특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The drying is a process that involves coupled and simultaneous heat and mass transfer. When a wet solid is subjected to thermal drying, two processes occur simultaneously. Drying is classified according to heat transfer characteristics in terms of conduction, convection and radiation. In thermal drying, radiation is easier to control than conduction and convection drying and involves a relatively simple structure. In this study, we measured energy consumption, surface hardness of paint and surface gloss with variation of surface temperature of drying materials and drying time. Drying characteristics and energy consumption between heating panels and hot air heating have been presented. The present study shows that a dryer using heating panels is more effective than a hot air dryer from the viewpoint of energy conservation. The hot air dryer, however, was not optimized and more studies on various parameters related to drying will need to be investigated for definite comparison of drying characteristics of the dryers. The result, even if limited, would present the effective availability of paint drying.

A Study on Weatherability with Particle Size and Orientation of Aluminum in Pre-painted Basecoat for Automotive (자동차용 선도장 베이스코트에서 알루미늄 입자 크기와 배향에 따른 내후성 연구)

  • Weatherability was examined according to aluminum particle size and its orientation used in PCM(Paint Coated Metal). Substrate delamination was checked by different UV transmission rate with QUV$^{(R)}$ (Q-LAB) equipment that can make accelerated UV irradiation. Film was prepared using three different types of conflake aluminum pastes under a PCM coating process and clearcoat was sprayed. UV transmission test results showed low transmission rate when EKART #790 having the smallest particle size and horizontal orientation was used. From the gloss retention results, gloss retention was highest in EKART #790 and followed by #770, #750.

  • Currently, automotive pre-primed coatings has been developed to overcome environmental regulations and to reduce manufacturing cost in automotive industry. By these reasons, an automotive pre-primed system has been investigated to remove the wash and pre-treatment process using a roll coating application. It is required to develop non-weldable pre-primed system for automotive structural adhesives, because pre-primed sheet coated with organic compounds is hard to be assembled by welding process. Primer 1 (polyester type) and primer 2 (urethane type) were designed to satisfy flexibility and formability for non-weldable pre-primed system. According to the results of physical property test of the primers, adhesion test such as single-lap shear test and T-peel test, primer 1 (polyester type) had better physical properties such as pencil hardness, solvent resistance, flexibility and adhesion with automotive adhesive than that of primer 2 (polyurethane type). In addition, the possibility of the non-weldable pre-primed system was applicable to automotive assembly process in place of welding process.

Fuel methanol as an alternative fuels (대체연료로서의 메타놀)

  • 이글에서는 메타놀의 성상과 재래의 내연기관에 메타놀을 사용하였을 때의 특성을 몇 가지 관 점에서 살펴보았다. 유리한 점으로 판단되는 사실은, 1)옥탄가가 높아 고압축비의채용으로 열 효율을 높일 수 있다. 2)기화참열이 크고 물과의 친화성이 좋다. 이러한 점은 내부냉각방식의 채용으로 이상적인 충상혼합기를 형성할 수가 있을 것이며, 현재의 내연기관의 냉각계통, 즉 방 열기, 물펌프, 냉각휜 등을 줄일 수 있을 것으로 본다. 또 NO.chi.의 배출을 저하시키는 이점도 있다. 3)단일성분 연료이므로 배기가스 조성이 단순하며 깨끗하다. 이는 배기공해상 메타놀연료가 석유계연료보다 유리하다. 그러나 메타놀기관은 앞으로 기술적 연구, 개선을 필요로 하는 점도 있다. 1) 메타놀의 가솔린과 비교하여 인화점이 높고 기화잠열이 커서 시동성이 나쁘고 2) 메타놀은 어느 종류의 금속, 프라스택, 도료 등을 부식시킨다. 3) 메타놀은 세탄가가 낮아, 압축점화는 무리이며 4) 발열량은 석유계 연료의 약 절반이다. 따라서 시동성, 재료, 착화방법, 개질 가스의 이용법, 내부냉각 등의 기술적인 문제가 개발된다면 질, 량, 가격적인 면에서도 내연기관용에는 메타놀이 유리하다고 본다. 그러나 현시점에서는 기관측으로 보아 자동차용연료로는 가솔린에 혼합하는 방법이고 그렇게 된다면 20-30%의 연료가 절감되리라고 믿는다.

Development of Eco-Friendly High-Solids Paints for Automotive Coatings (환경친화형 고고형분 자동차용 도료의 개발)

  • Manufactures of automotive repair finishes are tending to reduce more and more the level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in their paint processes in order to comply with increasingly strict environmental legislation. The production of high solids paints is a way to solve this problem. However, the application of high-solids paints is limited primarily by the viscosity of resin which is strongly related to painting ability: the higher solid content, the lower desired property. In this study, alkyl copolymer with low viscosity was synthesized by the introduction of the monomers with long-side chains and functional groups which improve flexibility and cross-linking density, respectively. The solid content of the paint prepared with the synthesized resin was 80wt% and its VOCs was reduced by 20%, compared to the commercialized paint. Also, the physical and mechanical properties of coatings on steel sheets were similar to commercialized one.

Corrosion Behavior of Cathodic Electrodeposited Epoxy Based Coating for Automotive Primer (자동차용 에폭시계 양이온형 전착도료의 내식성에 대한 연구)

  • Coating appearance is the most important problem in automotive industry. To increase the coating appearance quality, the corrosion resistance and the coating adhesion on metal substrates must be basically solved. The phosphating film made by the pretreatment of metal substrate is important factor to increase the coating adhesion. During the cathodic electrodeposition, the pH at the cathode surface increases up to about 12. In such a highly alkaline condition, the dissolution of metal substrate and phosphate film occurs. These phenomena result in the decrease of the bonding strength between the phosphating film and the substrate. Generally, the structure of zinc phosphating film is hopeite or phosphophyllite. It has been known that the phosphophyllite film contains better corrosion resistance and paint adhesion for hot water immersion test because of the decrease of dissolving amount of both metal substrate and phosphating film during the cathodic electrodeposition. It is found that the addition of Ni and Mn composition increase P-ratio and then can improve the paint adhesion on metal surface and the corrosion resistance.
