  • In this paper, we propose a novel chaotic micromixer of which mixing mechanism is based upon magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) multi-vortical flow generation in a simple straight microchannel. In the microchannel of the micromixer has electrodes patterned on two side walls and bottom wall. Lorentz forces are variously induced by changing applied voltages at the patterned electrodes in order to pump and mix conductive fluids in the microchannel. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations were conduced to characterize mixing behaviors inside the MHD micromixer. The mixing efficiencies were also evaluated for the various flow conditions.

  • This thesis examines the development and application of 'Health Monitoring System' which monitors periodically the state of a pipe of petrochemical plant by using magnetostrictive sensor technology. The existing guided-wave inspection methods cannot be applied to welding part inspection in pipe, and has a limit of precision when applied to general parts because of noise, reflected waves, and so on. This technology uses the information on displacement of a defect through periodic monitoring, which makes more precise inspection, and can be utilized very usefully in a petrochemical plant.

  • We have analyzed the torque signals measured in synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) coupled CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB thin film, which signals were drastically changed at flopping field ($H_F$) and saturation field ($H_s$). The minimum value of negative uniaxial anisotropy constant ($-\;K_1$) was appeared at HF. The $-\;K_1$ was due to the zero net magnetization by the antiferromagnetic coupling between two ferromagnetic layers. Whereas, the biaxial anisotropy constant (K2) was induced in the field range of $H_F$ < H < $H_s$. The induced $K_2$ was originated from deviation angles between magnetization directions of two ferromagnetic layers. And at H > $H_s$, intrinsic uniaxial anisotropy constant of CoFeB layer was observed. These change of the anisotropy constant with magnetic field was explained by the magnetization process of two ferromagnetic layers based on Stoner-Wohlfarth model calculation for SAF thin film.

  • The model for the magneto-impedance of composite wires composed of highly conductive nonmagnetic metal core and soft magnetic shell was derived based on the Maxwell's equations. The Cu($100{\mu}m$ diameter)/$Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$($15{\mu}m$ thickness) core/shell composite wire was fabricated by electrodeposition. The impedance spectra for the $Cu/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ core/shell composite wire were measured in the frequency range of 10 kHz~10 MHz under longitudinal dc magnetic field in 0 Oe~200 Oe. The spectra of complex permeability in circumferential direction were extracted from the impedance spectra by using the derived model. The extracted spectra of complex permeability showed relaxation-type dispersion which is well curve-fitted with Debye equation with single relaxation frequency. By analyzing the magnetic field dependence of the complex permeability spectra, it has been verified that the composite wire has magnetic anisotropy in longitudinal direction and the origin of the single relaxation process is the magnetization rotation in circumferential direction.

  • In order to assess the effects on the magnetic properties due to the defect in the material irradiated by fast neutron ranging $10^0-10^{18}n/cm^2$, the magnetic properties such as maximum magnetic induction, coercivity, remanence, Barkhausen Noise Amplitude(BNA), Barkhausen Noise Energy(BNE) and hardness were measured. It is shown that the magnetic properties and hardness do not change by the fast neutron irradiation under $10^{17}n/cm^2$. Therefore, in this experiment, it is understood that the magnetic properties decrease by the increase of hardness. This measurement method can be used to evaluate the neutron irradiation embrittlement nondestructively since the magnetic properties and hardness do change by the neutron irradiation over $10^{17}n/cm^2$ consistently.

  • We evaluated the effect of two kinds of breathing biofeedback technique such as audio-instruction and audio-visual biofeedback on breathing reproducibility and the CTV coverage during repeated treatment regimes in respiration-gated radiotherapy. In this study, the breathing data of nineteen lung cancer patients acquired from Medical College of Virginia (MCV) during five weeks were used. The dose evaluation algorithm was programmed in MATLAB. In the result, the CTV coverage was decreased as 30.0% due to the breathing irreproducibility for free-breathing. For audio-visual biofeedback, the CTV coverage was improved as 20.0% because patients can learn how control their breathing stably. And the audio-instruction was effective to preserve the breathing reproducibility.

  • In this paper, we propose a multi-mode wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a dual loop structure. The proposed multi-mode WPT system consist of outer loop module which can operate at two different frequency bands including 6.78 MHz magnetic resonance WPT mode and 13.56 MHz near field communication (NFC) mode and inner loop module connected with outer loop which can operate at two different frequency bands including WPC mode and PMA mode based on inductive coupling standards. In order to be able to embed this system into smartphone battery back cover, the electrical designs are optimized and then the size was fixed $45{\times}90{\times}0.35mm3$ (including ferrite sheet) which is the same commercial smartphone. The proposed multi-mode WPT module can cover WPC and PMA mode based on inductive coupling. Moreover, it has more than 20 dB return loss characteristics at two different frequency bands including 6.78 MHz and 13.56 MHz, and shows more than 70 % transfer efficiency between resonant coils at 6.78 MHz in magnetic resonant charging environment.
