  • In this study, the infiltration quantity of fine-grained soil into coarse-grained soil or aggregate for methods to accelerate consolidation drainage is checked by laboratory tests under various conditions and those characteristics on infiltration are examined closely. Irrespectively of pressures to fine-grained soil corresponding to stresses in a soil mass or moisture contents of fine-grained soil, fine-grained soil does not infiltrate into standard sand and marine sand, so it is verified that drain-resistance into sand mass of drainage / pile does not occur entirely and its shear strength would increase highly by water compaction. It is known that the infiltration depth of fine-grained soil into aggregate increases according that those size is larger in case of aggregates and it increases according that the pressure or the moisture contents is higher in case of same size aggregate. It is thought that drain-resistance into aggregate mass of drainage / pile would occurs by infiltrated fine-grained soil in advance though the infiltration depth of fine-grained soi of lower moisture content than liquid limit into 13 mm aggregate is low quietly. So gravel drain method or gravel compaction pile method, etc. using aggregate of gravels or crushed stones, etc. larger than sand particle size should be not applied in very soft fine-grained soil mass of higher natural moisture contents than liquid limit, and it is thought that its applying is not nearly efficient also in soft fine-grained soil mass of lower natural moisture contents than liquid limit.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide a criterion of ballast aggregate size distribution for paved track. The parameters considered in this study were different types of particle size distribution. Then the analysis for analyzing compressive and flexural strength, physical characteristics of aggregate, and the ballast box test were performed. In the test result of the physical characteristic performed by the ballast box test, the bearing capacity was measured lower than the expected value because of its boundary conditions. Among four types of ballast aggregate, type B was selected as one of best candidate distribution because of its bearing capacity, strength, development and economics.

  • Washed ballast is used on paved track to earn the high quality track performance. But, the water washing system caused the several environment problems such as the noise, dust and water pollution. Even if the washing is performed, it is difficult to earn the high quality because of the low efficiency of the water washing system. So, we developed the dry cleaning type machine to solve these problems. This machine excludes using the water completely. Especially, it is possible to organize on the conventional ballast cleaning train set.

  • Differently from fly ash, the bottom ash produced from thermal power generation has been treated as an industrial waste matter, and almost reclaimed or was applied with the additive of the part concrete. Bottom ash has various problems to use with the aggregate. Bottom ash is lighter than typically the sand or the gravel and it's physical properties (compressive strength etc.) is somewhat low because of high absorptance. In order to manufacture the ash concrete, we used a bottom ash as a main material and a pure sulfur as a binder. In this study, fundamental research methods that vary the grain-size of bottom ash and the ratio of sulfur vs ash were investigated to improve the quality of ash concrete such as compressive strength. Bottom ash in this research which occurs from domestic 4 place power plants, was checked physical and chemical properties. The compressive strength seems the result which simultaneously undergoes an influence in content of the sulfur and Bottom ash grain-size. We got the result of the maximum 92 MPa. The compressive strength was high result for grain size below 1.2 mm and high sulfur content.

  • It is to use effectively for stream channel and watershed management as the prediction and the analysis of bed changes characteristics in the Seomjin river downstream. The necessary data (section, bed composition material, pivot point water elevation, coefficient of roughness) with regard to analysis of the bed changes characteristics were based upon the survey data and analysis results in the Seomjin river maintenance basic plan. The prediction of bed changes was also completed with HEC-6 model. The study results were summarized as follows: The main factor of bed changes in the Seomjin river downstream can be decided by extreme extraction of bed aggregate rather than the change of hydrological data. According to the analysis of bed stability based on the relation between friction velocity and representative grain size, and the relation between dimensionless tractive force and representative grain size, the Seomjin river downstream appears to be increased overall. The bed composition material in the stream channel of the Seomjin river of 2003 year shows higher composition rate of gravel and lower composition rate of sand as compared to those of 1989 year. According to result that the prediction of bed changes, it is estimated that the bed will be risen approximately 1.5 m to the place up to 9 km from the estuary, have been repetitively risen and fallen up to 1 m to the place between $9{\sim}21\;km$ section, and fallen about 0.5m to the place between $22{\sim}25\;km$ section. As a result, the bed of the Seomjin river downstream can be decided to be risen gradually. However, since the prediction of this study is based on the assumption that there will be no forced aggregate picking, the bed changes can be much greater than expected when there is a massive aggregate picking as it had happened before.

  • Arsenic (As) is nonessential element toxic to plants. In Korea little is not only known about the extent of actual anthropogenic sources and inputs of arsenic to the agricultural land which plays a active role as a sink, but also systematic research on arsenic as an toxic element entering the food chain via the soil-plant pathway has not been investigated in the fields and greenhouses besides in few places of abandoned mining sites. Therefore, it is important to focus on the effect of As-contaminated soils on As uptake and biomass production of lettuce plants. In this study, As concentrations in the soil and accumulation of As in lettuce transferred by As uptake from soils were investigated. To do this, soil which was mixed with various rates of arsenopyrite gravels containing arsenic from 0 to 100% was packed into a round plastic pot. Then, 10 days old vegetable crops of chinese cabbage and lettuce after germination were transplanted into a pot. Growth of lettuce was observed for four weeks with one week interval. All experiments were done by triplicate. The results showed that the growth rates for number of leaves, width and length of the crop plants were retarded with increasing amount of gravel mixed due to increasing bioavailable amount of arsenate with increasing rate of gravel in soils. With these results, we conclude that the bioavailable amount of arsenate can influence the growth of lettuce.

  • In this study, the deposition of dredged soils from domestic rivers is simulated in the laboratory using a small soil box. In the tests, small sand with 0.002-0.85 mm, large sand with 0.85-2 mm, and gravel 4.75-5.6 mm are air or water-pluviated into the box. Such various deposition processes are simulated and their dry densities are measured. While dredging or piling such soils, their volume may change. The loss of such soils is calculated by a soil conversion factor C. The C value was determined as 0.91 for small sand, 0.96 for large sand, and 0.91 for gravel. The drainage through soil piles may occur and result in effective stress increase. This may cause the volume change of soils and in order to consider such effect it is necessary to recalculate C values. As a result, dry density increased by 5-12% when the drainage effect is considered. When the drainage effect is considered, the value of soil conversion factor C was 0.81 for small sand, 0.92 for large sand, and 0.82 for gravel. Eventually, the C value decreased up to 4-12%.

  • Generally, aggregate may limit the strength of concrete, and aggregate with undesirable properties including strength, shape and grading etc. cannot produce good concrete. Also, the properties of aggregate greatly affect the durability and structural performance of concrete. Recently, it has increased the using of crushed aggregate for concrete due to the exhaustion of good natural aggregate. In case of Korea, the using ratio of crushed stone occupies about 97% of whole coarse aggregate, and ratio of crushed sand occupies about 18.3% of whole fine aggregate. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the properties of crushed sand for concrete in capital region and concrete according to the replacement ratio of crushed sand to do suitable mix design and improve the concrete quality. According to results, it was found that nearly all the properties of crushed sand satisfied with the value recommended by KS.

  • In the recycling industry, the recuperation of zinc from Electric Arc Furnace dust by the Waelz process generates important quantities of slag. This slag presents good mechanical properties, and for the most siliceous slag. a high stability which would enable its use by total or partial substitution of certain granulates in civil engineering Our study (within the framwork of a European programme cofunded by the European Commission-DGXII) concerns the physico-chemical and mineralogical characterization and leaching behaviour of several types of Waelz slag. The leaching tests are regulatory tests and specific characterization tests of leaching behaviour. They take into account the influence of several main parameters of the valorization scenarios envisaged for the slag(e.g. pH, Redox potential, chemical nature of the leachant, type of contact-liquid/ solid etc.).
