In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking or debonding of the reinforcements cause a significant damage mode because the damaged reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity, and the difference between the average stresses of the intact and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The composite in damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. An incremental constitutive relation of discontinuously-reinforced composites including the progressive cracking damage of the reinforcements have been developed based on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka's mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of the composites is demonstrated.

Adhesion property of epoxy adhesive was evaluated with different surface roughness of glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRC) and optimized condition of surface roughness was confirmed. Different sizes of alumina (Al2O3) particles were blasted to GFRC to control surface roughness of GFRC using sand blasting method. The surface roughness was measured and quantified via surface roughness tester. Contact angle was measured using four types of different solvents. Surface energies and work of adhesion between epoxy adhesive and GFRCs were calculated with different surface roughness of GFRC. Adhesion property between epoxy adhesive and GFRCs was evaluated using single lap shear test and adhesion property increased with surface roughness of GFRC. The fracture surface of GFRCs was observed to evaluate adhesion property. Finally, the optimized roughness condition of GFRCs was confirmed.

The characteristics of thixoforming process can decrease liquid segregation because of the improvement in fluidity in a globular microstructure state and utilizes flow without an air entrapment. Therefore, in order to obtain the sound parts of metal matrix composites by using thixoforming process which is co-existing solidus-liquidus phase, it is very important to obtain a die design, fabrication conditions which affects the uniformity of the solid fraction on unfilling state and various defects throughout the fabricated parts. The die designs and fabrication conditions to obtain the good piston part are proposed for thixogorging process of metal matrix composites.
$TiO_2$ nanoparticles can be used to improve the performance of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites. In this study, the effect of the size of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites was investigated. The size of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles was easily controlled using heat treatment. The size of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles for this study were20nm, 100nm, and 200nm. Three types of carbon fibers with different diameters were also used in this study. The carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites with 20-nm $TiO_2$ powder showed the highest tensile strength compared to the other types of CFRP, regardless of the fiber maker or fiber diameter. The size of the $TiO_2$ powder and the diameter of the carbon fiber strongly affected the interfacial properties of all kinds of CFRP in this study.
The fabrication of $Al_2O_3/Al$ composites by pressureless infiltration technique was made to investigate the effects of processing variables such as content of Mg, processing temperature and time on the infiltration behavior of molten Al and microstructure. When the pure Al was infiltrated into mixtures of Mg and $Al_2O_3$ powder, processing temperature required to spontaneous infiltration was decreased and critical processing temperature and Mg content were $700^{\circ}C$ and 3wt% respectively. The content of Mg was found the most powerful variable for infiltration of molten Al. The infiltration ratio increased with Mg content and processing temperature, however the $Al_2O_3/Al$ composites which were fabricated by high Mg content and processing temperature resulted in non uniform dispersion of $Al_2O_3$ particles by excessive interfacial reaction. XRD pattern indicated that $MgAl_2O_4$ and AIN was observed at the interface of $Al_2O_3$ particles and in the Al matrix as reaction products.
The effect of size and volume fraction of ceramic particles, with sliding velocity on the wear properties were investigated for the metal matrix composites fabricated by the pressureless infiltration process. The metal matrix composites exhibited about 5.5 - 6 times the wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity, and by increasing the particle size and decreasing the volume fraction, the wear resistance was improved. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. Wear loss of AC8A alloy increased with sliding velocity, linearly : whereas, metal matrix composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at the slow velocity region. However, a transition point of wear loss was found at the middle velocity region, which shows the minimum wear loss. Further, wear loss at the high velocity region exhibited nearly the same value as the slow velocity region. In terms of wear mechanism, the metal matrix composites generally exhibited abrasive wear at slow to high sliding velocity; however, AC8A alloy showed abrasive wear at low sliding velocity and adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.

The effect of size and volume fraction of ceramic particles with sliding velocity on the wear properties were investigated for the metal matrix composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration process. The particulate metal matrix composites exhibited about 5.5 - 6 times of excellent wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity, and as increasing the particle size and decreasing the volume fraction the wear resistance was improved. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. Wear loss of AC8A alloy increased with sliding velocity linearly. whereas metal matrix composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region, however a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which show the minimum wear loss, and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited nearly same value with slow velocity region. In terms of wear mechanism, the metal matrix composites exhibited the abrasive wear at slow to high sliding velocity generally, however AC8A alloy showed abrasive wear at low sliding velocity and adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.
It is hard to get Filaments which are materials of the 3D printing Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM) method as radiation shielding in Korea. and also related research is insufficient. This study aims to provide basic data for the development of radiation shields using 3D printing by evaluating the physical properties and radiation shielding capabilities of filaments containing metal particles. after selecting five metal filaments containing metal particle reinforcement materials, the radiation shielding rate was calculated according to the Korean Industrial Standard's protective equipment test method to evaluate physical properties such as tensile strength, density, X-ray Diffraction(XRD), and weight measurement using ASTM's evaluation method. In the tensile strength evaluation, PLA + SS was the highest, ABS + W was the lowest, and ABS + W is 3.13 g/cm3 which value was the highest among the composite filaments in the density evaluation. As a result of the XRD, it may be confirmed that the XRD peak pattern of the particles on the surface of the specimen coincides with the pattern of each particle reinforcing material powder metal, and thus it was confirmed that the printed specimen contained powder metal. The shielding effect for each 3D printed composite filament was found to have a high shielding rate in proportion to the effective atomic number and density in the order of ABS + W, ABS + Bi, PLA+SS, PLA + Cu, and PLA + Al. In this study, it was confirmed that the metal particle composite filament containing metal powder as a reinforcing material has radiation shielding ability, and the possibility of using a radiation shielding filament in the future.
We have studied the effect of Ag additions on the microstructure and the related mechanical and supercon¬ducting properties of $ YBa_{2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) superconductors. A 5-15 vol.% of Ag was added to YBCO in the forms of Ag and $AgNO_{3}$, powder and the resultant microstructural evolution was evaluated. It was observed that the strength and fracture toughness of YBCO increased with increasing Ag content. These improvements in strength and fracture toughness are believed to be due to the strengthening mechanisms caused by the presence of Ag. In addition, YBCO-Ag composite superconductors showed higher values of strength and fracture toughness when Ag was added in the form of AgNO, than those of which was added Ag. The higher mechanical properties of YBCO- Ag resulting from $AgNO_{3}$, addition are probably due to the microstructure of more finely and uniformly distributed Ag particles. The addition of Ag also showed slightly improved critical current density of YBCO superconductors.
Titanium carbide (TiC) reinforced Inconel 718 matrix composites were successfully fabricated by a novel liquid pressing infiltration process. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated 55 vol% TiC-Inconel 718 composite are analyzed. The composite exhibits superior mechanical properties, such as hardness and compressive strength as compared with Inconel 718. It is believed that Mo and Nb, which are alloying elements in the matrix, diffuse and solidify into the TiC reinforcement, resulting in generation of core-rim structure with excellent interfacial properties.
