  • An ultrasonic multiple scattering simulation using cross-section of fine dust particles were proposed. These days, along with awareness of air pollution, social interest in fine dust is increasing. In the construction field, awareness of fine dust is increasing, and research on preparing various countermeasures is underway. The light scattering method fine dust meter currently in use is affected by environmental factors such as relative humidity, and reliability problems in terms of accuracy are continuously reported. However, the transmission of ultrasonic waves can directly reflect the physical change of the medium based on the mechanical wave. Using these advantages of ultrasonic waves, fine dust measurement simulation was performed using the scattering cross section and ultrasonic multiple scattering theory. The shape data of the fine dust particles were collected using a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), and a cross-section according to the fine dust particles was derived through numerical analysis. As a result of signal processing, the error for the number density corresponding to each cross-section is minimum 19, maximum 3455.

  • Effect of height on the size and shape of carbon nanotube (CNT) aggregates in the freeboard region of a bubbling fluidized bed ($0.15m\;i.d.{\times}2.6m\;high$) has been determined. Feret diameter and Heywood diameter of the CNT aggregates in the freeboard region of fluidized bed increased with increasing gas velocity. The average aggregate diameters and CNT particle number in the aggregates decreased with increasing of height in the freeboard. Aspect ratio increased as the location was closer to the surface of the dense phase, but decreased at the highest location. Solidity did not show any significant changes with height. The results showed the aggregates formation process is affected by the height in the freeboard. A correlation was proposed to predict the Heywood diameter of the CNT aggregates.

  • This study was the effectiveness of two downflow BAF(Biological Aerated Filter) systems at conventional water treatment system. A BAF reactor placed in front of coagulation and sedimentation tanks(Mode A) and after coagulation and sedimentation tanks(Mode B) that were compared in terms of removal of suspended particles, organic matters, and ammonia nitrogen. The suspended particles removal efficiency was over 80% for both Mode A and B, although Mode A gave slightly better results. $BOD_5$ removal and nitrification efficiencies were more than 90% for both reactor. The organic matter and ammonia removals were also superior in the Mode A. The biofilm thickness and biomass increased as increment of EBCT and the upper part of reactor more about 30% than lower part. The specific oxygen uptake rate(SOUR) was higher the upper part of reactor and Mode A than the lower part of reactor and Mode B. A cost analysis showed that the Mode A system was more cost effectiveness. It could save the coagulant dose by about 67% and the chlorine demand by about 95%. The ideal place to put the BAF reactor was in front of the coagulation/sedimentation process.

  • The fine dust generated in the home and restaurant business occupies a low ratio of about 4% of the total fine dust emissions. However, at the foodservice business, the rate of change of the pollutant concentration is very high, so that the temporary fine dust concentration can be measured up to 60 times. The pollutants generated from non-industrial combustion plants consist of particulate fine dust and gaseous organic compounds. To remove these pollutants, cleaning dust collection system, which is an effective system for simultaneous removal of gaseous and particulate matter, is applied. This is a method of increasing the probability of diffusion capture of the Brownian motion by pressurized liquid injection method using the atomizing nozzle. The dust removal efficiency of the fine dust collecting system was analyzed by nozzle spraying air pressure condition and angle using the manufactured fine dust removing system. As a result, it was confirmed that the efficiency of removal of fine dust and gaseous organic compounds was more than 90%. The developed system is expected to be highly usable in the future because it can remove particulate dust from the existing plant hood system without any installation cost.

  • A CPFD (Computational particle fluid dynamics) model of solar fluidized bed receiver of silicon carbide (SiC: average dp=123 ㎛) particles was established, and the model was verified by comparing the simulation and experimental results to analyze the effect of particle behavior on the performance of the receiver. The relationship between the heat-absorbing performance and the particles behavior in the receiver was analyzed by simulating their behavior near bed surface, which is difficult to access experimentally. The CPFD simulation results showed good agreement with the experimental values on the solids holdup and its standard deviation under experimental condition in bed and freeboard regions. The local solid holdups near the bed surface, where particles primarily absorb solar heat energy and transfer it to the inside of the bed, showed a non-uniform distribution with a relatively low value at the center related with the bubble behavior in the bed. The local solid holdup increased the axial and radial non-uniformity in the freeboard region with the gas velocity, which explains well that the increase in the RSD (Relative standard deviation) of pressure drop across the freeboard region is responsible for the loss of solar energy reflected by the entrained particles in the particle receiver. The simulation results of local gas and particle velocities with gas velocity confirmed that the local particle behavior in the fluidized bed are closely related to the bubble behavior characterized by the properties of the Geldart B particles. The temperature difference of the fluidizing gas passing through the receiver per irradiance (∆T/IDNI) was highly correlated with the RSD of the pressure drop across the bed surface and the freeboard regions. The CPFD simulation results can be used to improve the performance of the particle receiver through local particle behavior analysis.

  • In order to investigate the behavior of limestones which have been usually used for in-situ desulfurization reaction in circulating fluidized bed combustors, the attrition characteristics and calcination reactions of domestic limestones were analyzed in this study by using a thermogravimetric analyzer and an ASTM D5757-95 attrition tester. The average size distribution of limestones in circulating fluidized bed boilers have to be changed due to the attrition of particle-particle and particle-reactor wall and the calcination reaction. Domestic limestones might be used in commercial circulating fluidized bed boilers, but the attrition behaviors and particle size changes of limestones were varied. In calcination experiments at $850^{\circ}C$, the calcination reaction were varied with limestone samples. The calcination reaction time increased with an increase of particle size. Also, fine particles generated the attrition test of calcined limestone was 20% higher than those generated the attrition test of original limestone.

  • Size and shape of carbon nanotube (CNT) agglomerates in the dilute phase of a bubbling fluidized bed ($0.15m\;i.d{\times}2.6m\;high$) have been determined by the laser sheet technique. Axial solid holdup distribution of the CNT particles showed S curve with dense phase and dilute phase in bubbling fluidization regime. Heywood diameter and Feret diameter of the CNT agglomerates in the dilute phase of bubbling fluidized bed increased with increasing gas velocity. The CNT particle number in the agglomerates increased with increasing of gas velocity. Aspect ratio increased and circularity, roundness and solidity decreased with increasing of gas velocity. A possible mechanism of agglomerates formation was proposed based on the obtained information.

  • In this study, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to measure the concentrations of about 30 trace elements in airborne particulate (PM2.5) samples at urban area of Daejeon city located in the southwestern region of Korea. An inspection of the measurement data indicates that the distribution patterns of trace elements could clearly distinguish the elements with their concentrations ranging over five orders of magnitude. The mean values for Lu and Dy were found to be the lowest at values of 0.01 and $0.04ng/m^3$, while those for K and Fe showed the highest value of 671 and $653ng/m^3$, respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that PM2.5 concentrations can exhibit much more enhanced correlations with the elements of earth crustal components. The results of factor analysis further indicated that there are no more than six factors with statistical significance, which may exert dominant roles in regulating the elemental concentration levels in the study area. Enrichment factor analysis supports explicit interpretation of results found by this factor analysis.
