  • Dose enhancement effects at megavoltage (MV) X and ${\gamma}-ray$ energies, and the effects of different energy levels on incident energy, dose enhancement agents, and concentrations were analyzed using Monte Carlo simulations. Gold, gadolinium, Iodine, and iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$) were compared as dose enhancement agents. For incident energy, 4, 6, 10 and 15 MV X-ray spectra produced by a linear accelerator and a Co-60 ${\gamma}-ray$ were used. The dose enhancement factor (DEF) was calculated using an ICRU Slab phantom for concentrations of 7, 18, and 30 mg/g. The DEF was higher at higher concentrations of dose enhancement agents and at lower incident energies. The calculated DEF ranged from 1.035 to 1.079, and dose enhancement effects were highest for iron oxide, followed by iodine, gadolinium, and gold. Thus, this study contributes to improving the therapeutic ratio by delivering larger doses of radiation to tumor volume, and provides data to support further in vivo and in vitro studies.

  • This interest in radiation exposure makes increasing doctor's awareness and knowledge of radiation dose in patients during X-ray test important in reducing patient's uneasiness. However, very few facilities are equipped with measurement instruments. Therefore, an intensive study to find out patient dose using computational method has been initiated. This study used special features of the bit system and NDD-M and directly measured the output dose of diagnostic X-ray instruments used in Korea to create tables. Two different methods were found to be adequate when applied to cases when X-ray outputs were both known and unknown, and comparative experiments with real measurement doses were carried out. Presented methods were found to provide more accurate results compared to the bit system and NDD-M. Therefore, patient dose during clinical trials were found to be more easily acceptable to medical personnel in the radiation field in terms of radiation exposure and reduction of medical X ray dose.

  • Influence of the cavity size on the response of LiF TLD was theoretically investigated for a presumed system of spherical TLD cavity imbedded in a medium of polyethylene. Calculation of the response for different radii of the spherical cavity was carried out as a function of incident photon energy, applying recent cavity theory. The range of the radii covers 1.578 to 6.528 mm, while that of the incident photon energies extends from 0.02 to 3.0 MeV. As a results, the response of the LiF TLD imbedded in a medium as a cavity was found to be functions of its own size as wall as the incident photon energy.

  • This study aimed to identify dose reduction measures by retrospectively analyzing the entrance surface dose at computed tomography and angiography in cardiovascular examination and to contribute the patients with renal impairmend and a high probability of side effects to determine the inspection's direction by measuring the contrast usages actually to active actions for the dose by actually measuring the contrast medium dose. The CTDIvol value and air kerma value, which are the entrance surface doses of the two examinations, and the contrast medium dose depending on the number of slides were compared and analyzed. This study was conducted in 21 subjects (11 males; 10 females) who underwent Cardiac Computed Tomographic Angiography (CCTA) and Coronary Angiography (CAG) in this hospital during the period from May 2014 to May 2016. The subject's age was 48~85 years old (mean $65{\pm}10$ years old), and the weight was 37.6~83.3 kg (mean $63{\pm}6kg$). Dose reduction could be expected in the cardiovascular examination using CCTA rather than in the examination using CAG. In terms of contrast medium dose, CAG used a smaller dose than CCTA. In particular, as the number of slides increases at CAG, the contrast medium dose increases. Therefore, in order to reduce the contrast medium dose, the number of slides suitable for the scan range must be selected.

  • This study was an investigation of the anode heel effect caused by changing the angle of the x-ray tube. We established the following conditions for experimental measurements: 70 kV, 30 mAs, focus-detector distance of 100cm, and a collimator setting of $35{\times}43cm^2$. The measurement points were set up at the center of the collimator and extended to each side in intervals of 3.5cm, with points A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6 on the anode side and points C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 on the cathode side. We measured the entrance surface dose from point A6 to point C6 with each point perpendicular to an x-ray tube. And we did the same when measuring different angles of the x-ray tube from 15 to 30 degrees for every point on the anode and cathode sides. Using perpendicular x-ray tube, we found that the entrance surface dose of the A5 point was three times higher than that of the C5 point. Thus, we conclude that if the anode side is placed near highly radiosensitive organs, then there will be less radiation exposure when using a perpendicular x-ray tube. When imaging using x-ray tube angles, an angle to the cathode side can reduce the gap of the entrance surface dose on both the anode and cathode sides. When imaging areas where there are differences in thickness between the upper and lower sides, the angle to the cathode side that is closer to the thicker area can reduce the gap of the entrance surface dose and capture a higher quality image.

  • Abdominal obesity is one of the most influential index to predict of insulin resistance syndrome/metabolic syndrome in social demographic characteristics. It is matter of fact that radiation dose are increasing with development of medical treatment and device. In this study, we estimated distortion between reference image and entrance surface dose when take a chest radiography forward chest phantom assumed abdominal obesity. When angle of chest phantom incline $5^{\circ}$ forward, thoracic transverse and longitudinal diameter increase 1.22% and 0.44% each. Also cardiac transverse diameter increase 1.01% and cardio-throracic ratio (CTR) decrease 0.27% in the same situation of incline to $5^{\circ}$ forward. Thoracic transverse diameter shows the largest increase, and CTR was decreased. But entrance surface dose to phantom increase significantly 6.12% when angle of chest phantom incline $5^{\circ}$ forward. In conclusion, we have to pay attention to accurate positioning, to prevent a distortion of image through incline, and make patients not to expose to additional radiation.

  • Purpose : Irradiation cones by using backscatter electrons are made for the treatment of superficial small lesions of skin, oral cavity, and rectum where a significant dose gradient and maximum surface dose is desired. Methods and Materials : Backscatter electrons are produced from the primary electron beams from the linear accelerators. The design consists of a cylindrical cone that has a thick circular plate of high atomic number medium (Pb or Cu) attached to the distal end, and the plate can be adjusted the reflected angle. Primary electrons strike the metal plate perpendicularly and produce backscatter electrons that reflect through the lateral hole for treatment. Using film and a parallel plate ion chamber, backscatter electron dose characteristics are measured. Results : The depth dose characteristic of the backscatter electron is very similar to that of the hard x-ray beam that is commonly used for the intracavitary and superficial lesions. The basckscatter electron energy is nearly constant and effectively about 1.5 MeV from the clinical megavoltage beams. The backscatter electron dose rate of $35\~85\;cGy/min$ could be achieved from modern accelerators without any modification. and the depth in water of $50\%$ depth dose from backscatter electron located at 6mm for $45^{\circ}$ angled lead scatter. The beam flatness is dependent on the slit size and the depth of treatment, but is satisfactory to treat small lesions. Conclusions : The measured data for backscatter electron energy, depth dose flatness dose rate and absolute dose indicates that the backscatter electrons are suitable for clinical use.
