  • This study was aimed to investigate the tensile behaviors of PE(Polyethylene) fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composites with different combinations of micro silica sand and normal sand(river sand) with maximum particle size of 4.75 mm. Flow test result indicated the increase of flowability with higher replacement ratio of river sand. There was no noticeable difference in the mean compressive strength with different replacement ratio of river sand, but the variation in the compressive strength increased as higher amount of river sand was adopted for the replacement. The difference in the uniaxial tensile strength was negligible, but the tensile strain capacity was significantly influenced by the replacement ratio of river sand. It is thought that increased density of multiple cracks induced improved tensile strain capacity when higher percentage of river sand was adopted for fine aggregate. The deviation in the strain capacity increased as the replacement ratio of river sand was higher, as in the compressive strength. This study presented the feasibility of using normal sand instead of micro silica sand for highly ductile cementitious composites with equivalent or better uniaxial tensile performance, even though it might increase the deviation in the performance.

  • A study on cemented sand reinforced with short fibers was carried out to improve its unconfined compressive strength and brittle behavior. Nak-dong River sand was mixed with Portland cement and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers. A PVA fiber widely used for concrete reinforcement is randomly distributed into cemented sand. Nak-dong River sand, cement and fibers with optimum water content were compacted in 5 layers and then cured for 7 days. The effect of fiber reinforcement rather than cementation was emphasized by using a small amount of cement. Weakly cemented sand with a cement/sand ratio less than 8% was fiber-reinforced with different fiber ratios and tested for unconfined compression tests. The effect of fiber ratio and cement ratio on unconfined compressive strength was investigated. Fiber-reinforced cemented sand with 2% cement ratio showed up to six times strength to non-reinforced cemented sand. Because of ductile behavior of fiber-reinforced specimens, an axial strain at peak stress of specimens with 2% cement ratio increases up to 7% as a fiber ratio increases. The effect of 1% fiber addition into 2% cemented sand on friction angle and cohesion was analyzed separately. When the fiber reinforcement is related to friction angle increase, the 8% of applied stress transferred to 1% fibers within specimens.

  • Because the concrete crack that is the reason of the serviceability and durability degradation of concrete structure can be arisen from either the stress magnitude and gradient or other structural and material defects, the crack strength of concrete is hard to accurately evaluate. Especially, stress-state in concrete plate components such as rigid pavement and long span slab is biaxial flexure stress, and the flexural strength of those component may be different than the traditional rupture modulus of concrete subjected to uniaxial stress. In this study, an experimental investigation to assess of mechanical behavior under uniaxial and biaxial flexure stress is conducted and the proposed optimum specimen configuration is adopted. From the test, the modulus of rupture under uniaxial and biaxial stress are decreased as the size of aggregate or specimen is larger. And biaxial flexure strength of concrete specimens is varied from 39.5 to 99.2% as compared with that of uniaxial strength, and the biaxial strength of specimen with 20mm aggregate size is only 76% of uniaxial strength.

  • In this study, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber was used to increase strength (unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength) of bio-cemented sand using microorganism. Ottawa sand was mixed with PVA fibers having three fiber contents (0, 0.4, and 0.8%). The fiber mixed sand was treated 14 times by using Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) which included culture (2 times per day) during 7 days to improve its engineering properties. The Bacillus Sporosarcina pasteurrii (Bacillus sp.) was used for urease activity. The specimen was prepared as a cylindrical specimen of 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength were measured after cementation. Moreover, calcium carbonate content and SEM analyses were performed with a piece of sample. An average value of unconfined compressive strength increased and then slightly decreased but an average value of tensile strength ratio increased with increasing carbonate content the in same condition. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength increased about 30% and 160%, respectively. A strength ratio of unconfined compressive strength to tensile strength representing the brittleness decreased from 8 to 4 when fiber content increased from 0.0 to 0.8%. Such bio-cemented sand can be applied into slope area to prevent its shear failure or increase its tensile strength.

  • The Geochang granite widely used in construction works is one of the most popular dimension stones in Korea. In order to evaluate the physical properties of rock, a lot of laboratory tests for the Geochang granite were conducted to find unit weight, absorption ratio, P wave velocity, S wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, tensile strength, cohesion, friction angle and point load strength index. The uniaxial compressive strength of the Geochang granite was 19.5 times tensile strength and also 8.6 times cohesion, besides P wave velocity was 1.5 times S wave velocity. Correlation analyses were also conducted to find the correlation among 11 different physical properties, where the uniaxial compressive strength showed Pearson correlation coefficient of more than 0.8 with Poisson's ratio, point load strength index and Young's modulus, respectively. Regression analyses were finally conducted by means of both linear and multiple analysis and the brief results including coefficient of determination of more than 0.7 were presented.

  • Graphite material has been widely used for making the rocket nozzle throat because of its excellent thermal properties. However, when compared with typical structural materials, graphite is relatively weak with respect to both strength and toughness, owing to its quasi-brittle behavior, and gets oxidized at $450^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the thermal and mechanical properties of this material for using it in structural applications. This study presents an experimental method to investigate the fracture behavior of ATJ graphite at elevated temperatures. In particular, the effects of major parameters such as temperature, loading, and oxidation conditions on strength and fracture characteristics were investigated. Uniaxial compression and tension tests were conducted in accordance with the ASTM standard at room temperature, $500^{\circ}C$, and $1,000^{\circ}C$. Fractography analysis of the fractured specimens was carried out using an SEM.

  • In this paper, lateral-torsional buckling(LTB) strength of HSB800 high strength steel plate girder with monosymmetric section under uniform moment was evaluated by nonlinear analysis. The unbraced length in inelastic LTB range was considered for the sections whose smaller or larger flange is in compression with slender, noncompact and compact web. Analyses of SM490 steel girders were first performed with the single-panel and three-panel model to judge the validity of the constructed models by comparing those results with Eurocode 3, AASHTO and AISC codes. By using the same models, LTB strength of HSB800 girder was evaluated and it was found that the sections whose smaller flange is in compression with noncompact flange-slender/noncompact web could not reach the flexural strength of the design codes.

  • Soil samples from the King Sejong Station in Antarctic and Vladivostok were tested in the laboratory and specific gravity, compaction curve, grain size distribution were determined. The effect of temperature change on the thermal conductivity, unfrozen water content, compressive strength were investigated. In addition, the change of tensile strength with temperature of the soil from Vladivostok was measured. Samples for the compressive strength test and tensional strength test were prepared in a mould with a fixed volume to prevent swelling. Also the effects of temperature and water content change on those strength were compared. Results from the thermal conductivity test showed that thermal conductivity values for both soils was larger at temperatures below freezing than those above freezing. The unfrozen water content dropped rapidly within a temperature range of $0{\sim}-5^{\circ}C$ and then gradually decreased further $-20^{\circ}C$. Compressive strength test results showed various stress/deformation curves with a change in water content. Sandy soil of the King Sejong Station had a much larger strength than ice at an identical temperature, while clayey soil of Vladivostok had a smaller strength than ice in the initial stage, but showed a larger strength at temperatures belows $-15^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength tests revealed an increase in the strength with a decreasing temperature.
