A Study on the Cyclic Hardening Property and the Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Marine Materials (박용재료(舶用材料)의 반복경화(反復硬化) 및 저(低)싸이클 피로특성(疲勞特性)에 관한 연구)

  • In the non-linear behavior of many materials, there is difference between the monotonic behavior by static load and the cyclic behavior by cyclic load. In particular, the short fatigue cracks to propagate in elasto-plastic stress concentrations(notches), are governed significantly by the cyclic behavior of materials. Accordingly, it is needed to investigate and compare the monotonic and cyclic behavior of materials. In the pressent study, the stress-strain relations of materials by monotonic and cyclic load tests were examined for 2 kinds of steels(SS41, HT80) and 5 kinds of Al-alloys(A5083-O, A6N01-T5, A7N01-T4, A7016-T6, A7178-T6). And the constants for mechanical properties of the materials were determined by experimental results, Moreover, when a notch was subjected to cyclic load, the effect of cyclic hardening property of materials on the variation of stress-strain amplitude in the notch tip was discussed by the application of Neuber's rule and experiments for a center notched plate.

Propagation of Crack in Concrete Subjected to Dynamic Loading (동적하중(動的荷重)을 받는 콘크리트의 구열(龜裂)성장)

  • This study deals with the prediction of crack propagation in concrete mortar subjected to static and dynamic load. Total 54 CLWL-DCB(Crack-line-loaded-double-cantilever beam) concrete mortar specimens were tested to measure crack growth using ASTM 561-80. Main variables were sand to cement ratio and water to cement ratio. The resulting load(P)-COD(Crack Opening Displacement; $2V_1$) curves and COD-CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement; $2V_2$) curves were analyzed to calculate effective crack length and physical crack length by way of ASTM 561-80 proposed. Replica crack length were also obtained directly during the test. The differences in crack propagation between under static load and under dynamic load were investigated.

Reliability Analysis and Fatigue Models of Concrete under Flexural or Split Tensional Cyclic Loadings (휨 또는 쪼갬인장 반복하중을 받는 콘크리트의 신뢰성 해석과 피로모델 제안)

  • This paper compares the fatigue behaviors of concretes subjected to flexural and split-tensional loadings, and proposes the fatigue reliability models based on experimental results and reliability analysis. The fatigue tests were performed for the specimens of $150 mm{\times}75 mm$ split tensional cylinders and $150 mm{\times}150 mm{\times}550 mm$ flexural beams under constant loadings at three levels (70, 80 and $90\%$) with 0.1 stress ratio, 20 Hz loading speed and sine wave. The reliability analysis on fatigue data was based on Weibull distribution of two-parameters. From fatigue test results, two criteria were proposed to reject the experimental fatigue data because of statistical variation of concrete fatigue data. Two parameters ($\alpha$and u) of Weibull distribution were obtained using graphical method, moment method and maximum likelihood method. The probability density function(P.D.F) and cumulative distribution function(C.D.F) of the Weibull distribution for fatigue life of pavement concrete were derived for various stress levels using parameters, $\alpha$ and u. The goodness-of-fit test by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was acceptable at $5\%$ level of significance. Based on reliability analysis, a fatigue model for pavement concrete was proposed and compared from existing models.

A Study on the Fatigue Strength Improvement of the Fillet Welded Connections with respect to Post-Weld Treatment (용접 후처리에 의한 필렛용접부의 피로강도 향상에 관한 연구)

  • In the study herein, the fatigue test was conducted on the fillet welds of the load carrying cruciform joint, which is frequently used in the steel structures such as bridges, ships, etc. In addition, the fatigue strength was analyzed with respect to the different post-weld treatment. The treatment methods used include Toe Grinding, TIG Dressing, and Weld Profiling. The fatigue test was under constant amplitude with repeated load for these test specimens. In the load carrying full penetration fillet welded joints, regardless the conduction of the post-weld treatment or not, they all secured the fatigue strength of category "F", which exceeds the fatigue design specifications of BS Code. In the comparison of the fatigue strength upon the post-weld treatment, the fatigue strength tends to increase according to the order: Toe Grinding, TIG Dressing, and Weld Profiling.

The Experimental Study on the Effect of Track System on the Integral Behavior of Railway Bridge (궤도시스템이 철도교량의 정.동적거동에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Track system and periodic live load are characteristics of railway bridges. In the design and construction of railway bridge, periodic live load increases the importance of dynamic behavior. And It is well known that behavior of railway bridge may be affected by track system in real bridge. Through experimental study, static and dynamic behaviors were investigated. Deflection and stress due to bending moment were measured, the location of neutral axis of each section, natural frequency, damping ratio were analyzed for each three track systems - girder only, installed ballast track system and installed concrete slab track system. According to measured values for the each type of track system, concrete track system increases the stiffness of bridge by 50%, and ballast system does by 7%, dynamic responses of structure change linearly with the magnitude of load and location of neutral axis of each sections varies with each track system. Damping ratio is almost equal without and with track. Therefore, the effects of track system on the integral behaviors of railway bridge can not be ignored in the design of bridge, especially in the case of concrete slab track system. So study of the quantitative analysis method for effects of track system must be performed.

Application of Damage Index for Limit State Evaluation of a Steel Pipe Tee (강재 배관 Tee의 한계상태 평가를 위한 손상지수의 적용)

  • Maintaining structural integrity of major apparatuses in a nuclear power plant, including piping system, is recognized as a critical safety issue. The integrity of piping system is also a critical matter related to the safety of a nuclear power plant. The actual failure mode of a piping system due to a seismic load is the leakage due to a fatigue crack, and the structural damage mechanism is the low-cycle fatigue due to large relative displacement that may cause plastic deformation. In this study, in-plane cyclic loading tests were conducted under various constant amplitudes using specimens composed of steel straight pipes and a steel pipe tee in the piping system of a nuclear power plant. The loading amplitude was increased to consider the relative displacement generated in the piping system under seismic loads, and the test was conducted until leakage, which is the limit state of the steel pipe tee, occurred due to fatigue cracks. The limit state of the steel pipe tee was expressed using a damage model based on the damage index that used the force-displacement relationship. As a result, it was confirmed that the limit state of the steel pipe tee can be quantitatively expressed using the damage index.

Marco and Microscopic Observations of Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior in API 2W Gr. 50 Steel Joints (API 2W Gr. 50 강재 용접부의 피로균열전파거동의 거시적 및 미시적 관찰)

  • It is well known that a considerable amount of scatter is shown in experimental results relating to fatigue crack growth even under identical and constant amplitude cyclic loading conditions. Moreover, flux cored arc welding (FCAW) is a common method used to join thick plates such as the structural members of large scale offshore structures and very large container ships. The objective of this study was to investigate the macro- and microscopic observations of the fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of the FCAWed API 2W Gr. 50 steel joints typically applied for offshore structures. In order to clearly understand the randomness of the fatigue crack growth behavior in the materials of three different zones, the weld metal (WM), heat affected zone (HAZ), and base metal (BM), experimental fatigue crack growth tests for each of five specimens were performed on ASTM standard compact tension (CT) specimens under constant amplitude cyclic loading. Special focus was placed on the fatigued fracture surfaces. As a result, a different behavior was observed at the macro-level, depending on the type of material property: BM, HAZ, or WM. The variability in the fatigue crack growth rate for WM was higher than that of BM and HAZ.

  • Piping systems are crucial facilities used in various industries, particularly in areas related to daily life and safety. Piping systems are fixed to the main structures of buildings and facilities but do not support external loads and serve as non-structural elements performing specific functions. Piping systems are affected by relative displacements owing to phase differences arising from different behaviors between two support points under seismic loads; this can cause damage owing to the displacement-dominant cyclic behavior. Fittings and joints in piping systems are representative elements that are vulnerable to seismic loads. To evaluate the seismic performance and limit states of fittings and joints in piping systems, a high-stroke actuator is required to simulate relative displacements. However, this is challenging because only few facilities can conduct these experiments. Therefore, element-level experiments are required to evaluate the seismic performance and limit states of piping systems connected by fittings and joints. This study proposed a method to evaluate the seismic performance of an elbow specimen that includes fittings and joints that are vulnerable to seismic loads in vertical piping systems. The elbow specimen was created by connecting straight pipes to both ends of a 90° pipe elbow using flexible groove joints. The seismic performance of the elbow specimen was evaluated using a cyclic loading protocol based on deformation angles. To determine the margin of the evaluated seismic performance, the limit states were assessed by applying cyclic loading with a constant amplitude.

Seismic Performance Evaluation on Bending Deformation of 2-Ply and 3-Ply Bellows Expansion Pipe Joints (2겹 및 3겹 벨로우즈 신축배관이음의 휨 변형에 대한 내진성능평가 )

  • The application of seismic separation joints that can improve the deformation capacity of piping is an effective way to improve seismic performance. Seismic separation joints capable of axial expansion and bending deformation are installed where deformation is expected and used for the purpose of safely protecting the piping. Bellows are flexible and have low stiffness, so they can be used as seismic separation joints because they have excellent ability to respond to relatively large deformation. In this study, the seismic performance and limit state for bending deformation of 2-ply and 3-ply bellows specimens were evaluated. Seismic performance was evaluated by applying an increasing cyclic load to consider low-cycle fatigue due to seismic load. In order to confirm the margin for the limit state of the evaluated seismic performance, an experiment was conducted in which a cyclic loading of constant amplitude was applied. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the bellows specimen was made of stainless steel and had a high elongation, so that the 2-ply bellows specimen had the limit performance of resisting within 3 cycles even at the maximum forced displacement of the 3-ply bellows specimen.
