The effect of acid and alkali treatment on extracting nutrients from beef bone (소의 사골(四骨) 중(中)의 영양성분 용출에 대한 산, 알카리 처리효과)

  • An experiment was made to investigate the effect of acid and alkali treatments obfserving the amount of nutrients especially calcium(Ca), phosphorus(P), ${\alpha}$-amino nitrogen(${\alpha}$-amino N), and total nitrogen(total-N)which were extracted from beef bone. 0~0.8% acetic acid and 0~0.5% sodium bicarbonate were used for treatment on different levels. The results are as follows; In case of acid treatment, Ca and P contents in bone stock wer observed to increase significantly according to acid concentration. Ca and P contents in bone stock highly incrased especially when the acid concentration was above 0.3%. Ca and P ratio varied from one to two when the acid concentration was below 0.01%. However contents of ${\alpha}$-amino N and total-N increased significantly when acid concentration was above 0.5%. In case of alkali treatment, contents of Ca and P did not increased significantly on all levels of sodium bicarbonate. The content of ${\alpha}$-amino N, however, increased significantly when the alkali concentration was in 0.05% but total-N did not show any variation in amount. These results suggest that acid treatment can give rise to an increase of the amount of nutrients which are extracted from beef bone but alkali treatment does not.

A Study on Distribution of the Contaminated Sediments in Lake Paldang (팔당호의 오염퇴적물 분포 조사)

  • Status of the contaminated sediments in Lake Paldang was investigated. Sediment samples were taken at 34 points and analyzed in terms of ignition loss, CODer, total P and total N. The contamination level did not show any significant variation with depth of the sediments, which indicated the contaminants were recalcitrant. The type of P in the sediment was analyzed, and the sum of adsorbed P and NAI-P, that can be re-solubilized under the reductive condition, was found to be 20-30% of the total P. From the analysis of the water quality change along with the flowing path, it would be concluded that the effect of the sediments on the water quality is insignificant yet in Lake Paldang. However, long term analysis covering at least four seasons should be continued in order to get a more reliable conclusion. A depth profile map of the sediment in Lake Paldang was provided.

Long-term Leaching Characteristics of Lead Contaminated Soils treated with Soluble Phosphate (액상인산염으로 처리된 납 오염토양 복원의 장기용출 특성)

  • A long-term leaching column experiment was performed to evaluate the teachability of the stabilized lead-contaminated soil using soluble phosphate. The study shows that Pb in the leachate was little detected and the remaining $PO_4-P$ concentration kept below 0.1 mg/L due to the formation of geochemically stable lead phosphate minerals from the reactions of labile soil Pb forms with the added soluble phosphate salt. After the experiment, there was no Pb migration from the top to the bottom of the stabilized soil column. But the Pb concentrations of the 12 soil samples from the control column decreased with the increase of the soil depth.

인산이온의 흡착에 의한 Apatite의 표면전위의 변화와 흡착 특성

  • 질산, 인산, 불산을 페수처리한 슬러지를 가열함에 따라서 아파타이트 결정으로 발달하는 과정을 살펴보면 질산칼슘의 분해에 따라서 아파타이트가 생성되지만 HF는 분해되지 않고, 결정내에 잔류하고 있다는 것을 알 수가 있다. 따라서 $900^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 소성한 아파타이트를 물에 용출시킬 대 HF가 용출되어 나오므로 그 사용에 제한이 되고 있다. 이러한 현상을 방지하고, 양론적인 아파타이트를 제조하기 위하여 인산 이온을 흡착 시키고 $900^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 소성한 결과 불소이온은 대폭적으로 감소되었고, Ca/P의 몰비는 양론적인 1.67에 근접하였고, 이 조건에서 합성한 아파타이트는 중금속의 흡착, 인 및 COD의 흡착, 제거율이 우수하였다.

Analysis of the Benthic Nutrient Fluxes from Sediments in Agricultural Reservoirs used as Fishing Spots (낚시터로 활용중인 농업용 저수지의 퇴적물 내 영양염류 용출 분석)

  • For two agricultural reservoirs that are rented for fishing spots, benthic nutrient fluxes experiment were performed two times with two sediments from fishing-effective zone and one sediment from fishing-ineffective zone using laboratory core incubation in oxic and anoxic conditions. During benthic nutrient fluxes experiment, the changes in DO, EC, pH, and ORP in the supernatant were not significantly different between fishing-effective zone and fishing-ineffective zone, and were similar to the sediment-hypolimnetic diffused boundary layer in agricultural reservoir. Except for $NO_3{^-}-N$, more benthic nutrient fluxes of $NH_4{^+}-N$, T-P, and $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ from sediment to hypolimnetic was measured in anoxic than in oxic conditions (p<0.05). As the DO concentration in hypolimnetic decreases, the microorganism-mediated ammonification is promoted, the nitrification is suppressed, and finally the $NH_4{^+}-N$ diffuses out from sediment to hypolimnetic. Also, the diffusion of T-P and $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ from sediments to hypolimnetic is accelerated through the dissociation of the phosphorus bound to both organic matters and metal hydroxides. The difference in the benthic nutrient diffusive fluxes between fishing-effective zone and fishing-ineffective zone was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Therefore, it was found that fishing activities did not increase the benthic nutrient diffusive fluxes to a statistically significant level. Due to the short fishing activities of 10 years and the rate-limited diffusion of the laboratory core incubation, the contribution of fishing activities on sediment pollution is estimated to be low. No significant correlation was found between the total amount of nutrients in sediment and the benthic nutrient diffusive fluxes in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Therefore, nutrients input from various nonpoint sources of watersheds are considered to be a more dominant factor rather than fishing activities in water quality deterioration, and both aeration and water circulation in hypolimnetic were required to suppress the anoxic environment in agricultural reservoirs.

The Characteristic of Selective Attachment and Bioleaching for Pyrite Using Indigenous Acidophilic Bacteria at $42^{\circ}C$ ($42^{\circ}C$에서 토착호산성박테리아의 황철석 표면에 대한 선택적 부착과 용출 특성)

  • The bioleaching experiment under $42^{\circ}C$ was effectively carried out to leach the more valuable element ions from the pyrite in the Gangyang mine waste. Bacteria can survive at this temperature, as indigenous acidophilic bacteria were collected in the Hatchobaru acidic hot spring, in Japan. To enhance the bacterial activity, yeast extract was added to the pyrite-leaching medium. The indigenous acidophilic bacteria appeared to be rod-shaped in the growth-medium which contained elemental sulfur and yeast extract. The rod-shaped bacteria ($0.7\times2.6\;{\mu}m$, $0.6\times7\;{\mu}m$, $0.8\times5\;{\mu}m$ and $0.7\times8.4\;{\mu}m$) were attached to the pyrite surface. The colonies of the rod-shaped bacteria were selectively attached to the surroundings of a hexagonal cavity and the inner wall of the hexagonal cavity, which developed on a pyrite surface. Filament-shaped bacteria ranging from $4.92\;{\mu}m$ to $10.0\;{\mu}m$ in length were subsequently attached to the surrounding cracks and inner wall of the cracks on the pyrite surface. In the XRD analysis, the intensity of (111), (311), (222) and (320) plane on the bacteria pyrite sample relatively decreased in plane on the control pyrite sample, whereas the intensity of (200), (210) and (211) increased in these samples. The microbiological leaching content of Fe ions was found to be 3.4 times higher than that of the chemical leaching content. As for the Zn, microbiological leaching content, it was 2 times higher than the chemical leaching content. The results of XRD analysis for the bioleaching of pyrite indicated that the indigenous acidophilic bacteria are selectively attacked on the pyrite specific plane. It is expected that the more valuable element ions can be leached out from the mine waste, if the temperature is increased in future bioleaching experiments.

Brucite Treatment to Reduce Phosphorus Release from Polluted Sediments (퇴적물로부터 인 용출 저감을 위한 Brucite 처리)

  • Lab-scale batch experiments using several 25-L transparent acrylic reactors were conducted to develop optimum capping materials that can reduce phosphorus released from polluted sediments. The sediment used in the experiment was very fine clay(8.8 $\Phi$ in mean grain size), and organic carbon($C_{org}$) content was as high as 2%. Four kinds of batches with different capping materials Brucite($Mg(OH)_2$), Sea sand($SiO_2$), Granular-gypsum($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$), Double layer(brucite+sand), and one control batch were operated for 30 days. Phosphorus fluxes released from bottom sediments in the control batch were estimated to be 14.6 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, while 9.5 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, 5.2 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, 4.2 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, and 3.1 $mg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ in the batch capped with Sea sand, Granular-gypsum, Double layer, and Brucite, respectively. The results obtained from lab-scale batch experiments show that there were 70% reduction of phosphorus for some materials such as Brucite, Double layer(brucite+sand), and whereas sea sand only about 35%. The pH range of surface sediment to which Brucite was applied showed about $8.0{\sim}9.5$ in the weak alkaline state. This effect can prevent liberation of $H_2O$. The addition of gypsum into the sediment can reduce the progress of methanogenesis because of fast early diagenesis and sufficient supply of $SO_4^{2-}$ to the sediments, stimulate the SRB highly. Therefore, the application of Brucite and Gypsum can reduce phosphorus release from the sediment as a result of formation of $Mg_5(OH)(PO_4)_3$, pyrite($FeS_x$), and apatite-mineral.

Experimental Study of Leaching Phenomena of Cs-137 From a Cement Matrix Generated at PWR Plant (가압 경수로에서 생성된 시멘트 고화체로부터 Cs-137의 용출 현상의 실험적 연구)

  • Experimental study for the leaching behavior of Cs-137 was carried out using the simulated evaporator bottom product of PWR plant. The method of leach test proposed by the IAEA was partially modified using ANS method. The effect of various factors, i.e., sampling method, curing temperature, curing time, leachant temperature, vermiculite addition and volume-to-surface ratio, was considered in this experiment. Diffusion model in semi-infinite slab was in a good agreement with the data obtained from 4-weeks cured specimens. The effective diffusion coefficient of the specimens which were cured at the temperature of $24^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks was found to be $1.20{\sim}1.47{\times}10^{-11}cm^2/sec$. With the experimentally obtained diffusion coefficient ($1.47{\times}10^{-11}cm^2/sec$), long-term prediction for the leaching of Cs-137 was carried out using finite-slab approximation. The estimated fraction of Cs-137 which remains in the environment is found to be less than 0.25 percent of initial amount after 100 years. About 25 years after the beginning of leaching, its fractional amount in the environment reachs the maximum value, 0.66 percent of initial amount.

  • Busuge is conventional snack food in Korea which is made from steeped glutinous rice. The effect of the steeping time on total acidity, viscosity, canons, phosphorus and raising power of glutinous rice was investigated. Total acidity was increased from 0.3 to 1.02% by steeping for 20 days at $10^{\circ}C$. Viscosity was increased from 25.5 to 32.4 cP after 14 days steeping and thereafter decreased to 23.5 cP. K, Na, Ca, Mg and P were leached 68, 67, 85 and 16% on 20 days steeping, respectively. K, Na and P were leached in the initial period, and Ca, Mg in the middle period of steeping. Raising power was increased according to the acidity increase and leaching of Ca, Mg and inorganic phosphorus during steeping. However, influence of the former on raising power was greater than the after.

The Effect of Mineral Dissolution from Beef Rib Bone by Acid Condiment and Cooking Time (산성조미료와 조리시간이 소뼈의 무기질 용출에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of boiling with grain vinegar and citric acid on the dissolution of Ca. Mg and P out of beef rib bone during stew preparation was investigated. As the concentration (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0%) of grain vinegar and citric acid increased, the amount of Ca, Mg and P dissolved out of the rib bone increased compared with the control. The increase in boiling time(1, 2, 4, 8, 12 hour) also showed the same result. Between the two acid condiments citric acid extracted more Ca, Mg. P compared with the grain vinegar at the same concentration. The pH of the rib bone stew added with the acid condiments increased gradually during the boiling process. In sensory evaluation. the rib bone stew boiled for 12 hours with 2% grain vinegar was highly evaluated compared to the stew prepared with citric acid.
