Geodesign was suggested by Dangermond(2009) as a next paradigm of GIS to be a future basis for spatial planning and design. Ko(2015) also suggested a geodesign methodology that uses spatial information from a landscape designer's perspective. Spatial planning and design fundamentally require creativity and efficiency but Ko's methodology did not include the creativity aspect. To complement the deficiency, this paper expand the research scope to deal with a designer's cognitive limits and to provide better experiences for the landscape designers. An interface was designed to improve the designer's creativity based on interactions that were derived from a script of landscape design. The expanded methodology for both efficiency and creativity is suggested for the interface by analyzing preceding researches. ESRI's GeoPlanner for ArcGIS, as a first geodesign software, is compared to improve the interface in terms of creativity. One of the difficulties as a thesis is that it is not easy to measure the improvement of design creativity physically and quantitatively. This paper tried to eliminate any stumbling block in supporting creativity and to help designers find new orders in design subconsciousness and to reach a new concept. In addition, the interface to express instantaneous design ideas would be a guide to overcome the designer's cognitive limits.
The relationship between dependent personality traits and depression has been widely studied in the field of psychology. However, the existing evidence is mixed and often contradictory, obscuring the precise nature of this relationship. Given that the most common method of measuring the construct of dependency has been to administer self-report instruments, it is possible that implicit dependency, another parameter of dependency that is distinct from explicit dependency measured via self-report, is confounding these results. The current study aimed to clarify the relationship between dependency and depression by comparing the effect of implicit and explicit dependency. Implicit dependency was measured via the Single Category-Implicit Association Test (SC-IAT), a test of implicit personality that has shown to have good validity and reliability in previous studies. In addition, we examined the effect of gender on this relationship, given the potential role of gender stereotype that may make male participants show lower levels of dependency when measured through self-report (vs. SC-IAT). Results showed that implicit and explicit dependency indeed had separate and distinct relationships, and the relationships depends on participants' gender. Among female participants, increased explicit dependency predicted depression only when implicit dependency was also elevated. In contrast, explicit dependency predicted depression regardless of the level of implicit dependency in male participants. These findings suggest that implicit and explicit dependency may be separate parameters capturing different aspects of dependent personality traits, further supporting the need to consider the implicit aspect of personality in personality assessment research. Implications and limitations of the current findings and directions for future research are discussed.
As a way to gather diverse information required for everyday living, the importance of social networks has been growing. Social network services have been spreading rapidly because of diffusion of the Internet, evolution of social network sites, and recognition of the importance of social networks. Recently, the social network service has been evolved based on a new paradigm, Web 2.0, pursuing participation and openness. Following the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, the social network service allows users to make and maintain new relationships in a more convenient way. Users of the social network service tend to reveal their personal information, and share their ideas and content with other people; in the process they become aware of their existence, feel satisfaction with life and exert influence to others as a member of the society. This study uses higher order factor analysis to analyze factors that affect the intention of using the social network service. A research model was developed with second-order factors including perceived social presence, perceived gratification and perceived social influence. First-order factors are grouped by technical, individual and social factors. Smart PLS 2.0 was used to conduct empirical analysis. The analysis results supported the validity of the research model.
Previous research on the action effect had shown how simple action towards a stimulus can enhance the processing of that stimulus in subsequent visual search task (Buttaccio & Hahn, 2011; Weidler & Abrams, 2014). In four experiments, we investigated whether semantic representation of action word can induce the same attentional boost towards that stimulus and whether the type of action performed can modulate the action effect. In experiment 1, we replicated the same experimental paradigm displayed in previous studies. Participants were first shown an action word cue - "go" or "no". When the action cue was "go", participants were to press a designated key, but not to when the action cue was "no". Next, participants performed a visual search task, in which they reported the orientation of a tilted bar. The target could appear on top of the previously shown prime object (valid), or not (invalid). Reaction times (RTs) to the search task were measure for analysis and comparison, and the action effect had been replicated. In experiment 2, participants were instructed to respond with the keyboard for the action task, and to respond with the joystick for the visual search task. In experiment 3, participants were instructed not to press any key on the onset of prime, and then perform the visual search task to isolate the effect of semantic representation. Lastly, in experiment 4, participants were instructed to press separate keys for "go" and "no" on the onset of prime, and then perform the visual search task. Results indicate that semantic representation alone did not modulate the action effect, regardless of type of action and medium of action.
This article is concerned with the values of the BICOF in terms of the urban revitalization. The values of the BICOF cover the economic value, social value, cultural value and city image value. The 13 indicators for measuring the values of the BICOF are developed. The article examined how the related stakeholders identified the BICOF's values on the Bucheon City by using AHP method. In addition, the objectives and programmes of the BICOF are analyzed in the perspective of the urban revitalization. As a result, the recognition of the BICOF's values varied according to the stakeholders. In addition, the result of AHP analysis indicates that the cultural values and image values should have priorities in comparison with the social values and economic values. This recognitions is different from the recent formal statements that BICOF's economic values should be emphasized as a priority. The article concludes that the identity of the BICOF should be established in the base of building the value consensus among the related stakeholders.
The visual span refers to the number of letters that can be accurately recognized without moving one's eyes. The size of the visual span is affected by sensory factors such as perimetric complexity, crowding, and mislocation of letters. Korean Hangul utilizes rather unique alphabetic-syllabary writing system, quite different from English and Chinese writing systems. Due to this combinatorial nature of the script, the visual span for Hangul characters can also be affected by the letter type (e.g., CV vs CVCC). The present study examined the effect of syllable complexity on the visual span for Hangul by comparing letter recognition accuracy across four letter type conditions (C only, CV, CVC, and CVCC). We also aimed to determine the meaningful letter type(s) that is associated with differences in reading abilities in Korean. Using a trigram presentation method, we found that overall recognition accuracy declined as syllable complexity increased. However, the visual span for CVC type was greater than that for CV type, suggesting that the effect is not necessarily linear, and that there might be other factors affecting the visual span for these types of letters. C and CV type showed fairly strong positive correlations with reading comprehension, suggesting that these might be the meaningful units for measuring visual span in relating to reading abilities.
Study about existence of illusion which human beings feel from imitated image based reality have been continuing by copy theory and conventionalism for a long time. Traditional copy theory which had controlled representation theory from plato have explained illusion by similarity of image and representation objects. According to copy theory, image is natural sign unlike language but the late in the 20th century, conventionalism from N, Goodman insists they are not any special similarity between image and representation objects. They insist image and conventional sign just as language. These opposit theory rearranged conventionalism by the entrance on the cognitive science. The copy theory couldn't explain the problem of representational gap between reality and duplication, but photo media makes new paradigm about theory of the illusion. The problem of representational gap was disappeared by CGI images on the base of digital media. We are exposed exquisite duplication for a example, movie, advertisement, printings. Sometimes duplications are more real than the original works. Digital is a non-material object by 0 and 1. Specially real lighting skill and mechanism are copied perfectly by photon mapping skills and the duplications are produced more real than the original works. By disappearance of representational gap, we need new theory model for explaining of digital illusion and copy theory can be the key.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether the phonological information or the orthographic information plays a major role in visual word recognition. To do so, we used a non-word lexical decision task(LDT) in Experiment 1 and masked priming tasks in Experiement 2 and 3. The results of Experiment 1 showed that reaction times and the error rates were affected by the orthographic characteristics of the non-word stimuli such that orthographically similar non-words condition showed prolonged reaction times and higher error rates than control condition. In Experiment 2 and Experiment 3, the participants performed masked priming lexical decision tasks in two SOA conditions(60ms, 150ms). The results of the both experiments showed that the orthographically identical first syllable priming facilitated lexical decision of the target words while both of the pseudo-homophone priming and the phonologically identical first syllable priming did not. The dual route hypothesis(Coltheart et al, 2001), assuming that orthographic information rather than phonological information is the major source for the visual word recognition processes, fits well with the results of the current study.
Since human visual system has limited capacity for visual information processing, it should select goal-relevant information for further processing. There have been several studies that emphasized the possible involvement of memory in spatial shift of selective attention (Chun & Jiang, 1998, 1999; Klein, 1988; Klein & MacInnes, 1999). However, other studies suggested the inferiority of human visual memory in change detection(Rensink, O'Regan, & Clark, 1997; Simons & Levin, 1997) and in visual search(Hotowitz & Wolfe, 1998). The present study examined the involvement of memory in visual search; whether memory for the previously searched items guides selective attentional shift or not. We investigated how search works by comparing visual search performances in three different conditions; full exposure condition, partial exposure condition, and partial-to-full exposure condition. Revisiting searched items was allowed only in full exposure condition and not in either partial or partial-to-full exposure condition. The results showed that the efficiencies of attentional shift were nearly identical for all conditions. This finding implies that even in full exposure condition the participants scarcely re-examined the previously searched items. The results suggest that instant memory can be formed and used in visual search process. These results disagree with the earlier studies claiming thar visual search has no memory. We discussed the problems of the previous research paradigms and suggested some alternative accounts.
Using a modified Posner's cue-target paradigm, we investigated whether negative cues attract more attention than neutral cues in anxious people. Previous studies used commonly an unbalanced proportion of valid and invalid trials(75% vs. 25% respectively). But in the present study, an equivalent proportion of valid and invalids trials was used for measuring detection speed of cues without participant's expectancy caused by the unbalanced proportion. Emotional words(Experiment 1) and facial expressions(Experiment 2) were used as cues for target locations. The result of Experiment 1 and 2 showed that threatening cues facilitated target detection in valid trials and interfered with it in invalid trials in anxious participants and a, reverse response patterns were found in non-anxious participants. This indicates that threatening cues attract more attention to the cued location in anxious people and in contrast, non-anxious people avoid threatening stimuli. In Experiment 3, we investigated the difference of validity effect across anxiety levels. The results showed that anxious participants gave less attention to cued location when the cues were non-informative whereas non-anxious participants gave more attention to cued locations in the same condition. We discussed two kinds of cognitive bias caused by anxiety levels: attentional bias and proportion related bias.
