  • In this paper, we introduce the basic components of the Cognitive Radio Networks along with possible threats. Specifically, we investigate the SSDF (Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification) attack which is one of the easiest attack to carry out. Despite its simplicity, the SSDF attack needs careful attention in order to build a secure system that resists to it. The proposed scheme utilizes the Anomaly Detection technique to identify malicious users as well as their sensing reports. The simulation results shows that the proposed scheme can effectively detect erroneous sensing reports and thus result in correct detection of the active primary users.

  • For the cognitive radio (CR) systems sharing the spectrum with narrowband primary devices, this paper presents a fractional bandwidth (FBW) mode utilizing a variable portion of the system band to avoid the interference to or from the primary devices. For the method, the preamble and FBW mode detection algorithm are provided to obtain the FBW mode information during the synchronization. Simulation results in wireless regional area network (WRAN) environments reveal that the FBW mode can be detected reliably without any deterioration of the synchronization performance.

  • Spectrum sensing is one of the most important technologies in cognitive radio. Although many studies have considered energy detection technique as the spectrum sensing technique, noise variance in practical systems is difficult to estimate accurately. Thus, in the real system, the probability of false alarm will not be maintained constant. In this paper, with considering that the cognitive radio does not know the primary user's signal, we propose a new spectrum sensing scheme which can operate without the information of noise variance. Through simulations, we show that the proposed scheme can detect spectrum with the condition of unknown noise information and have robustness for the change of noise variance.

  • Spectrum sensing and spectrum decision are the main functions that cognitive radios (CRs) have to perform in order to get the best available spectrum band for the establishment of a wireless communication. These problems are worsened in the presence of users with different demands and spectrum channels with different properties in a heterogeneous network. The primary objective in this work is to design and simulate a new spectrum decision algorithm for heterogeneous cognitive radio system. To this end, first, we consider all cognitive users are separated into different traffic classes according to their Quality of Service (QoS). The cognitive users within one traffic class perform spectrum sensing in centralized group-based cooperative spectrum sensing system and the users of different traffic classes share the sensing results. Second, we propose a novel use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to optimally select available bands according to user requirements and detected spectrum channel characteristics (SCC). In this paper, utility function is used as spectrum decision algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method shows can effectively select the best available spectrum channels with a low complexity.

  • Another crucial issue is a providing secondary user(SU) with the its guaranteed quality of service(QoS) in cognitive radio systems, from the SU view to be allowed to opportunistically utilize the primary user(PU) spectrum on non-interfering. In this paper, we propose a bandwidth reallocation scheme for reducing SU dropping rate through renegotiation of requested channel numbers when available bandwidth is not enough for accepting the spectrum handoff SUs. We categorize SU calls into two types : the first priority and the second priority SU, and the first SU' service is supported by bandwidth reservation based on ARMA prediction model for PU arrivals, while the second SU's bandwidth demands for spectrum handoff is to be reallocated through their renegotiation. Simulation results show that our scheme can improve SU dropping rate and system resource utilization efficiency by bandwidth reallocation.

  • In this paper, a multi-hop relaying transmission scheme is analyzed regarding its feasibility and potentiality in the IEEE 802.22-based cognitive radio (CR) environment. Shortly, basic design issues are addressed such as relay station (RS) deployment and a frame structure of physical channel to escape inter-hop interference. This paper mainly develops a radio resource management scheme based on spectrum sensing results aggregated from CR secondary nodes and improves the opportunistic spectrum sharing efficiency. In particular, a decision rule about a channel availability is made using a distributed sensing method. Subsequently, spectrum allocation and routing path decision procedures are proposed to establish a link from source to destination with a hop-by-hop manner. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-hop relaying scheme is substantially profitable in CR environments if the number of hops and RS deployment are designed in such a way that the spectrum sharing gain is larger than spectrum division loss which is inherently induced in multi-hop relaying systems.

  • With the explosivley increasing demand in wireless telecommunication service, the shortage of radio spectrum has been worsen. The traditional approach of the current fixed spectrum allocation leads to spectrum underutilization. Recently, CR (Cognitive Radio) technologies are proposed to enhance the spectrum utilization by allocating dynamically radio resources to CR Networks. In this study, we consider a radio resource(power, subcarrier) allocation problem for OFDMA-based CRN in which a base station supports a variety of CUs (CRN Users) while avoiding the radio interference to PRN (Primary Radio Network). The problem is mathematically formulated as a general 0-1 IP problem. The optimal solution method for the IP problem requires an unrealistic execution time due to its complexity. Therefore, we propose an heuristic that gives an approximate solution within a reasonable execution time.

  • There is a scheme where secondary users (SU) use predicted spectrum holes for primary users (PU) not to utilize for efficient utilization of the limited spectrum resources in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we propose an adaptive call admission control framework that minimizes spectrum hopping call dropped probability (SHDP) for satisfying SU quality of service (QoS). The scheme is based on a call admission control (CAC), bandwidth prediction and adaptive bandwidth assignment. The prediction model predicts not only the number of spectrum holes, but requested bandwidth of SU spectrum hopping call, and then the CAC minimizes SHDP via an adaptive bandwidth assignment in resources not being enough for reservation. We bring Wiener prediction model to predict the resources. Simulations are conducted to compare the performance of proposed scheme with an existing, and show its ability of minimizing the SHDP.

  • It is important to select the most appropriate channel for efficient transmission of massive data in wireless sensor network. In the fixed channel method for wireless sensor node, shortage of frequency may be a major constraint to support a variety of environments. In this paper, the method that seeks common channels between two nodes without common control channels in the existing wireless cognitive radio network is introduced in order to use efficiently the channel of wireless sensor network. The problem of existing method shows the severe degradation of performance that is caused by interference of linkage between selected channels, so that the sequential algorithm is suggested to improve the performance. From the results of computer simulation, the suggested method shows that the link can be set 50% faster than the other methods as the number of links increases because the beacon packet waiting time caused by the interference decreases remarkably.
