  • In this study, a fatigue testing system capable of performing load-controlled tension-tension tests for micro-specimens was developed by using an electro-magnetic actuator. Using this system, fatigue testing as well as tensile testing can be performed over a wide range of loading frequencies. Further, a new laser interferometric strain/displacement gage was used during fatigue testing to obtain high-resolution measurements of the cyclic deformation of thin films. Since the testing machine and the displacement gage are stable and show quick responses, the displacement can be measured instantaneously and continuously during fatigue testing, and high-resolution results can be obtained.

  • An engineered cementitious composite (Engineered Cementitious Composite) had been developed in previous study. Theoretical prediction of the tensile stress-strain relation of ECC is important in providing the material constitutive relation necessary for designing structural members. But, few studies have been reported with regard to predicting the tensile stress-strain relation of ECC. Prediction of the tensile stress-strain relation of ECC accounting for actual bridging curve, such as fiber dispersion is needed. The present study extends the work as developed by Kanda et al., by modeling the bridging curve, accounting for fiber dispersion, the degree of matrix spalling, and fiber rupture to predict the tensile stress-strain relation of ECC. The role of material variation in the bridging curve, such as number of effective fiber actually involved in the bridging capacity and how it affects the multiple cracking process is discussed. The approach for formulating the tensile stress-strain relation is discussed next, where the procedure for obtaining the necessary parameters, such as the crack spacing, is presented. Finally, the predicted stress-strain relation will be validated with experimental tests results.

  • The displacements of soil nailed wall and the nail tensile force for 11 soil nailing sites were investigated by using measurements obtained from inclinometer and strain gauge. The maximum horizontal displacement which occurred between 5% and 15% of the final excavation depth was found to be below 0.3% and 0.2% of excavation depth for well and poorly constructed sites. It was also found that the maximum horizontal displacements for 0.4%, 0.3% and 0.2% of excavation depth occurred when the ratios of nail length to final excavation depth were 0.5, 0.5~0.6 and 0.6~0.7. But the maximum horizontal displacement increased by 0.3% of excavation depth when the ratio was above 0.7. This was probably due to the shallow excavation depth and the deep soil stratum. The non-dimensional maximum tensile force of nail, K, from ground surface to $(0.6H_f)$ of the final excavation depth was less than 0.8 and decreased linearly between $(0.6H_f)$ and the final excavation depth. Also, the maximum tensile force was found to reach up to 60% of the ultimate tensile force at final excavation.

  • Steel restrainer cables for multiple frame bridges in California in the United States have been shown to be effective in preventing unseating at internal hinges during the past several earthquakes. Consequently, the steel-cable-restrainer is being tested for applications on multiple-span-simply-supported (MSSS) bridges in the mid-American region. In addition, shape memory alloy (SMA) bars in tension are being studied for the same application, multiple frame bridges, the developed seismic forces are transferred to piers through the restrainers. However, in MSSS bridges, the seismic forces are transferred to abutments by the restrainers. Therefore, the abutment' behavior should also be investigated. In this study, we assessed the seismic performance of the three types of restrainers, such as steel restrainer cables, SMA in tension, and SMA in bending for an MSSS bridge from moderate to strong ground motion, bending test of an SMA bar was conducted and its analytical model was determined for this study. Nonlinear time history analyses were conducted to assess the seismic responses of the as-built and the retrofitted bridges. All three types of restrainers reduced the hinge opening and the SMA in tension was the most effective of the three devices in preventing the unseating, all restrainers produced damage on the abutment from the pulling action of the MSSS bridge due to strong ground motions, was found that the retrofit of the abutment in the pulling action is required in the installation of restrainers in MSSS bridges.

  • A numerical analysis on the effect of increasing tensile stiffness of the geosynthetics on the soil displacement and pile efficiency was conducted. Parametric studies by changing the stiffness of soft soil, internal friction and dilatancy angles of the embankment material, and flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics were carried out. In general, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics improves the pile efficiency, whereas the amount of its improvement depends on the condition of parameters. In case of the sufficiently low stiffness of the soft soil or high flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics, a noticeable increase in the pile efficiency can be observed. When the stiffness of the soft soil is very low, the increase in the stiffness of the geosynthetics can significantly reduce the vertical displacement in the piled embankment. When the flexual stiffness of the composite layer is sufficiently high, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics can greatly improve the pile efficiency.

  • The tension load of the ground anchor inserted in the ground gradually changes over time. In this regard the change of the initial tension load is primarily decreased by the fixation condition of the fixing head and the mechanical characteristics of the tensile material. The subsequent additional tension load is a time-dependent loss mostly due to the fixing conditions of the bonded length and the surrounding ground properties of the field. In this paper, therefore, a measurement system using a relative displacement detector that can relatively easily measure the change of tension load is discussed. As a result of the review, it was confirmed that the results using the relative displacement detector are similar to those of the real scale model test, and it was also confirmed that similar results were obtained with the result of the pull-out test conducted on the ground anchors fixed to weathered rocks condition. In addition, a pull-out test was conducted on the test anchors whose initial tension load loss was relatively large and through this test pull-out behavior of the tension type ground anchors was verified.

  • Crack widths play an important role in the serviceability limit state. When crack widths are controlled sufficiently, the reinforcement corrosion can be reduced using only existing concrete cover thickness due to low permeability in the region of finely distributed hair-cracks. Thus, the knowledge about the tensile crack opening is essential in designing more durable concrete structures. Therefore, numerous researches related to the topic have been performed. Nevertheless accurate measurement of a crack width is not a simple task due to several reasons such as unknown potential crack formation location and crack opening damaging strain gages. In order to overcome these difficulties and measure precise crack widths, a displacement measurement system was developed using digital image correlation. Accuracy calibration tests gave an average measurement error of 0.069 pixels and a standard deviation of 0.050 pixels. Direct tensile test was performed using ultra high performance concrete specimens. Crack widths at both notched and unnotched locations were measured and compared with clip-in gages at various loading steps to obtain crack opening profile. Tensile deformation characteristics of concrete were well visualized using displacement vectors and full-field displacement contour maps. The proposed technique made it possible to measure crack widths at arbitrary locations, which is difficult with conventional gages such as clip-in gages or displacement transducers.
