  • With the extension of the average life span and the rapid aging of the population, defining elderly population as a single group is difficult as the physical, economic and social conditions of individual have become different. Therefore, policies that take into account the characteristics of each group are required. The purpose of this study is to classify individual travel types and to analyze the characteristics of each travel type, based on individual public transportation trajectory data as known as smart card data. Among the four classified types, the long-distance low-frequency stay type and the short-range medium-frequency mobile type show external activity traffic characteristics for retirement leisure, while the long-distance high-frequency stay type and the long-distance high-frequency mobile group include regular commuting. Traffic variability and residence areas of stay were identified in terms of each classified travel type. The results of this study provide the important suggestions for establishing a transportation policy that takes into account the characteristics of each type of elderly population in Seoul.

  • Demographic Analysis(DA) as well as Post Enumeration Survey(PES) are typical methods for evaluating completeness of census and vital statistics. In spite of its popularity, DA has never been attempted in Korea, while other international journals of demography have pointed out the backwardness of death registration in Korea in terms of DA approach. This paper introduces various DA methods and modifies them to be adequate for Korea census and vital statistics. Our method are also applied to reconstruct year-age-sex specific population and estimate their omission rates for year and age. Empirical analysis of census and vital statistics of Korea from 1985 to 2010 demonstrates high completeness of death registration in Korea, contrary to existing literatures. We also investigates abnormal patterns in census by comparing with reconstruction data in view of cohort, sex ratio and age ratio.

  • The Genetic Algorithm has been frequently applied by many researchers as one of the population surface modelling tool in estimating the regional population based on the gridded spatial system. Taking the East-Hwasung area as the case, this study first builds a gridded population data based on the KLIS and eAIS databases as well as municipal population survey data, and then constructs the attribute values of the explanatory variables by way of GIS tools. The GA model is run to maximize its fitness function measuring the correlation coefficient between the observed and predicted values of the 70 population cells. It is shown that the GA output predicted reasonably consistent and meaningful coefficient estimates for the explanatory variables of the model.

  • In September 2008, the Korean government has legally pronounced criteria to designate the Impact Fee Zone on the basis of the population increase rate. Taking the Dongtan Newtown in Hwasung City as the case, the study tries a grid analysis method to figure out the cells that exceed the legal population increase rate criteria. The study then performs scenario analyses that try to envelope the cells into spatially contiguous groups based on their degrees of stepwise adjacency either by the cell buffer or the cell distance standards. By overlapping the selected cell groups over the actual land-use map for the vicinity, it is found that the selected areas reasonably coincide with the blocks of the high population density in the Newtown.

  • In Korea, the population size of the elderly is rapidly increasing, and housing for them is emerging as an important issue. In particular, Aging in Place (AIP) has steadily been presented as a direction of welfare for the elderly. This study empirically examines the effect of the interactions of the elderly with their children on residential mobility for older Koreans. To do so, this study employed random effect logistic regression models with the dataset of the 2008-2020 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. The findings are as follows. First, it was found that the interaction with their children increased the probability of residential mobility for older Koreans in both metropolitan areas and non-metropolitan areas. Second, as age increased, the interaction with their children tended to further promote residential mobility for older Koreans, but such effects varied depending on related variables. Third, it was confirmed that the possibility of further promoting residential mobility for older Koreans increased through the interaction effects of the variables associated with the interaction with their children. This study suggests policy implications for the residential mobility of older Koreans, i.e., whether the interactions with their children improve independent residential environments by enhancing housing stability, in terms of AIP.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between spatial characteristics and heat waves in the distribution area of the elderly population in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. For analysis, the Statistics Census data, the Ministry of Environment land cover, Landsat 8 surface temperature, and the Meteorological Agency's heat wave days data were used. The spatial characteristics of the distribution of the elderly population was classified into 5 types through K-mean cluster analysis considering the land use types. The characteristics of the elderly population by spatial type were higher in the urbanized type(cluster-3), but the proportion of the elderly population was higher in the agricultural and forest area types(cluster-1, cluster-2). In the characteristics of the surface temperature and the heat wave days, the surface temperature was the highest in the urban area, but heat wave days were the highest in the rural area. As a result of analyzing the heat wave characteristics according to the spatial type of the distribution area of elderly population, cluster-2 with the largest area in agricultural areas was highest at 15.95 days, and cluster-3 with a large area in urbanized types was the lowest at 9.41 days and 9.18 days. In other words, the elderly population living in rural areas is more exposed to heat waves than the elderly population living in urban areas, and the damage is expected to increase. The results of this study could be used as basic data to prepare various policy measures for effective management and prevention of vulnerable areas in summer.

  • This study aims to identify the trend of changes in tourist floating population before and after COVID-19 in major tourist destinations in Jeju Island through spatial analysis. Seongsan-eup and Andeok-myeon in Jeju Island were selected as the research area, and the research period was set at 1 year before and 2 years after the COVID-19 outbreak. For the analysis, mobile floating population data was refined and processed to calculate floating population distribution and floating population increase/decrease data. This was converted into spatial data and an overlay analysis was performed with location data of major tourist attractions. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the floating population of indoor tourist attractions and small facilities decreased immediately after COVID-19, and that in open coastal areas or large facilities, the floating population decreased less or actually increased. In conclusion, in tourism development, it is necessary to identify changes in floating population according to the characteristics of tourist facilities, and it is necessary to develop tourism facilities and strategies that can respond to risk situations such as pandemics when developing tourist destinations.

  • Background: This study aimed to identify the relationship between regional health outcomes and the living population, which may reflect the characteristics of population migration in Seoul. Methods: This study used raw data on cause of death statistics from Statistics Korea's Micro Data Integration Service. To identify the independent variable, the living population, we used living population data provided by Korean Telecom for 25 districts of Seoul. The control variables were based on the four domains of SDoH (social determinants of health; economic stability, healthcare access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context). Panel generalized estimating equations (GEE) analysis was used to determine the relationship between living population and regional health outcomes. Results: The panel GEE analysis showed that all mortality-related health outcomes (avoidable, preventable, and treatable mortality) had a statistically significant negative relationship with the living population. This indicated that an increase in living population had a positive effect on mortality-related health outcomes. Conclusion: The identification of a notable relationship between regional health outcomes and population density underscores the utility of incorporating living population metrics as key indicators in the development of policies aimed at mitigating health disparities. Moreover, this finding advocates for strategic expansions of local infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on areas characterized by low living populations.

  • As large-scale housing sites are being developed rapidly in Sejong City, which was launched in 2012 for resolving the adverse effects of overconcentration in the capital area, promoting balanced development of the country, and reinforcing national competitiveness, changes in spatial structure are expected in the surrounding areas. For setting the directions of urban planning, it is essential to understand changes in spatial structure. This study purposed to measure changes in the spatial structure of neighboring areas resulting from the construction of Sejong City by approaching from the aspect of spatial interaction. In the analysis, we calculated population potential for future spatial interaction using the accessibility model, and interpreted quantitatively and qualitatively the outcomes of spatial interaction among neighboring areas before and after the construction of Sejong City using population potential as an indicator. According to the results of the analysis, the impact range of the population potential of the subject areas had been shrinking continuously since 1995, and in 2013 population potential dispersed as the population concentrated on and around Cheonan City. Although Sejong City, as a new area of population potential, was not found to play the role of a pivotal point for the surrounding areas, it is probably because the analysis was made just after people began to move to Sejong City. Accordingly, along with the effort of Sejong City to reach the planned population, it is necessary to keep monitoring changes in related factors and changes in the spatial structure of the surrounding cities resulting from the growth of population.
