  • Recently, Korea has been experiencing a problem of population decline, therefore the transition to a compact spatial structure is being urged. However, what is required is not just physical compression, but a compact city that also considers connectivity, in view of the changes in today's demographic and industrial structure. From this point of view, this study measures the compressibility of domestic cities suffering from extinction risk due to low birth rates, aging population, and population decline, and examined the spatial structure characteristics. In addition to the compressibility evaluation index used in previous studies, the compressibility of six indicators (population, land use, service accessibility, transport accessibility, connectivity, and concentration) was compared and analyzed, and a comprehensive compression index was calculated. The analysis results, based on the comprehensive compression index, classified 2.3% cities in the first grade, 4.6% in the second grade, 16.09% in the third grade, 43.68% in the fourth grade, and 33.33% in the fifth grade areas. Currently, the urban characteristics affecting the compactness index differ from region to region. Therefore, it is necessary to establish measures and policies for extinction risk considering the influence of each region's compactness index. This study is meaningful in that connectivity was considered using spatial syntax, and the compactness of cities at risk of extinction was compared and analyzed quantitatively. It is expected that this study will be used as basic data to establish the direction and action strategy for extinction risk cities.

  • This study analyzes the effects of localities' competitiveness which can contribute to employment growth in industries, on economic development in the local jurisdictions. For this analysis, such competitiveness is measured by competitive shares calculated from the application of a shift-share method to the employment growth in industries each locality witnessed over the 1990s. And we use annual population growth rate and average annual per capita income (substituted by per capita head tax derived from income tax) of the early 2000s as variables of local economic development. The analysis targets 167 local jurisdictions in Korea for the employment growth in industries, and is mainly placed in a spatial econometric setting. The results of analysis are as follows : The competitive share of manufacturing has the effect of increasing annual population growth rate whereas that of construction has a negative effect on the population growth rate. As well, the competitive shares of manufacturing and of construction negatively influence average annual per capita income while that of community, social and personal services positively affects the income.

  • In the face of an impending demographic cliff, this research delves into geographical disparities in socioeconomic statuses and living arrangements of young single women in rental housing and also to explore influential factors of their residential assessment and housing expenditure. From the Korean Housing Survey of 2020, the cross-sectional study identified 847 unmarried female single-person householders aged between 20 and 39 in four districts - Seoul and Gyeonggi-Incheon Area (GIA) of Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), and metropolises and non-metropolises of non-SMA. The empirical analyses revealed that regardless of regions, most of the respondents were college-educated, salaried employees in late 20s living in a studio flat, seldom bore debt and barely relied on social services. Renters in SMA, employment rate, income and living expenses were higher than those in non-SMA and they resided in small, old but adequate housing with a separate bedroom. In particular, Seoulites suffered from housing cost overburden but most singles in GIA benefited from the lowest housing burden. While the main determinant of residential assessment was livability, housing satisfaction was additionally affected by old housing and the satisfaction with residential environment was also explained by urban amenities. Despite geographical variations, housing expenditure was primarily driven by income and employment.

  • Goesan-gun and Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do have been separated administratively since 2003. Goesan-gun is rural area, and Jeungpyeong-gun is urban area. The purpose of this study is to observe changes after the separation of administrative districts (Goesan-gun and Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do). This study observed changes of Goesan-gun and Jenugpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do based on population, the highest land value, employees and location quotient. Population of Goesan-gun has decreased, and that of Jeungpyeong-gun has increased. The highest land value of Jeungpyeong-gun has increased more than that of Goesan-gun. Observation of location quotient, with the location quotient of 2013 as a criterion, showed that manufacturing business and producer service business have developed in Jeungpyeong-gun, while agriculture and customer service business have developed in Goesan-gun. This result is due to the difference between regional characteristic of Goesan-gun and Jeungpyeong-gun.

  • Background: Korea's population of children and adolescents has decreased by 2.88 million over the past decade and is expected to decline further due to the unprecedented low birth rate. In the fee-for-service compensation system, the decline in the pediatric population relates directly to the profit decrease in the pediatric clinics. This study analyzed whether the worsening profits of pediatric clinics impacted their closure. Methods: We built annual data for pediatric and other department clinics (internal medicine, otolaryngology, and family medicine) using the status of medical institute and health insurance claims data from 2012 to 2022. Then, we analyzed whether institutional variables such as annual profit and regional variables (Herfindahl-Hirschman index, the number of clinics per 100,000, etc.) affected the closure of clinics. The methods used in this study are descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis. Odds ratios for each variable were estimated by generalized estimating equations (GEE). Results: The closure rate of pediatric clinics was 2.66%-7.04% in 2012-2022, which was consistently higher than those of internal medicine, otolaryngology, and family medicine clinics. The profit gap per institution between the pediatric and the other clinics grew from 126 million won in 2012 to 245 million won in 2019. In the GEE analysis, profit decrease compared to the previous year with lower profit was the main factor that increased the closure of pediatric and other department clinics. After adjusting profit-related variables, the decrease in the pediatric population itself did not relate to the closure of pediatric clinics. The number of pediatric clinics or monopolies also did not affect the closure of pediatric clinics. Conclusion: The worsening profit is the crucial factor for the closure of pediatric clinics, while the pediatric population is decreasing. For this reason, it is necessary to actively seek ways to maintain a stable treatment system for children and adolescents.

  • South Korea faces a declining population and rural areas vanishing due to urbanization. Infrastructure, especially medical facilities, may not be sustainable for a long-term. This may impact vulnerable groups like children, teens, and the elderly, worsened by an aging population and low birth rates. Gangwon-do, notably Chuncheon-si, suffers from rural depopulation and poor healthcare self-sufficiency. In this paper, using 2SFCA(Two-Step Floating Catchment Area), we analyze healthcare access in Chuncheon-si, identifying gaps and vulnerable areas. LISA analysis helps map medical vulnerability, considering patient demand and supply. The Gini coefficient assesses spatial inequality. We propose distributing healthcare services and personnel based on age and region. The aim is to identify locations for additional hospitals catering to the elders, Infants, Children, and Adolescents, considering spatial accessibility.
