A Case Study for a Couple in Pre-Divorce Decision-Making Stage (이혼 전 의사결정단계 부부를 위한 치료 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to find a therapeutic intervention for a couple in the pre-divorce stage. We used data from the case study to examine the factors related to marital conflict and enhancements related to the family of origin. Our sample was the couple in pre-divorce stage who has been married for 3 years. The therapeutic intervention methods used were taken from Positive Psychology, Family Systems Theory, Communication Theory, and Solution-Focused Therapy. We counseled the couple once a week for 10 sessions from $5^{th}$ October to $7^{th}$ December in 2010. Our objective was to give a positive perspective on the couple who was in the pre-divorce stage. We also provided clear-cut, practical techniques for responding productively to inappropriate expressions of anger. The couple acquired strategies to make their relationship work more effectively. Finally, the couple set their family goals for adjustment instead of divorce.

Some Thoughts on Recent Family Policies Designed to Prevent Divorce in the United States of America: With Special Regard to the Marriage License and the Covenant Marriage (이혼예방을 위한 최근 미국 가족정책에 관한 소고 -결혼허가증제도 및 서약결혼제도를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the Marriage Preparation and Preservation Act adopted in Florida which require premarital counseling and covenant marriage laws of Louisiana and Arizona among many kinds of family policy which recently are designed to prevent divorce in the United States of America. Most of states in the U.S. require the marriage license prior to having a marriage ceremony. Covenant marriage legislation has admirable motives to strengthen marriage and cure the defects of the no-fault system. In that legislation, the imposition of waiting period for the no-fault ground of divorce, proof of fault requirements, consent requirements, and mandatory course or counseling attendance will likely serve as deterrents to those seeking divorce as a first resort. To sum up, by offering preventive measures in the form of premarital counseling and waiting period before marriage, covenant marriage will force couples entering marriage to carefully consider their actions before they act and prevent broken marriages in the first place. In response to rising divorce rates, the Koreas family policy has put its emphasis of fixing social problems accompanied with family dissolution. Rather, this study suggests that attention in Korea also should be shifted from broken marriages to preventing them.

  • This study aimed to develop a comprehensive group therapy program for divorced parents and their children for increased self-esteem, problem-solving technique, communication ability and emotional support. This comprehensive program was based on Solution-Focused and Satir's Experiential Family Therapy Models, as well as on therapeutic activities from various sources. Six mothers and 18 children of divorced families participated in this program which consisted of six, two-hour sessions. This program was found to be effective in enhancing the participants' self-esteem and communicative ability in addition to emotional support between mothers and their children, and among participants. Therapeutic activities were implemented in harmony with the Solution and Experiential based values and techniques, which seemed to heighten the fun and motivation for the participants to change their view points and behaviors in a positive way.

Protective Factors of School-Aged Children's Adjustment to Parental Divorce from Low Income Families (저소득층 이혼 가족 아동의 적응에 있어 보호요인 탐색 : 아동의 대처 전략, 부모 양육 유형, 부모의 스트레스, 사회적 지지)

  • This study explored adjustment of school-aged children from low-income divorced families. Specifically, protective factors for children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were investigated with children's coping strategies, perceived social support, parents' childrearing style, and parental stress. Subjects of this study were 126 children of 4 to 6 grade and their custodial parents(38 fathers, 88 mothers) from divorced families. Children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were not different neither by children's sex nor custodial parent's sex. When children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, and when parents experienced less childrearing stress, children perceived themselves to be more competent. Similarly, when children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, received more social support, they perceived themselves to be more adequate. Children whose parents had high levels of childrearing stress showed more internalized and externalized behavior problems. Furthermore, children who perceived less supports from peers showed more behavior problems.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the path of parental divorce on their children's emotional and behavioral problems through child-rearing behaviors and children's self-esteem. The participants were 162 children from divorced families and 194 from intact families. The Instruments used were CBQ (Children's Behaviour Questionnaire) (Rutter, 1967), Child-rearing rating scale (Park, 1995) and SEI (Self Esteem Inventory) (Coopersmith, 1967). The data were analyzed by ANCOVA and path analysis. The results were as follows. First, there were significant differences in children's emotional and behavioral problems and self-esteem, and caregivers' child-rearing behaviors between children from divorced and intact families. Second, parental divorce affected children's emotional and behavioral problems directly, as well as indirectly through child-rearing behaviors and children's self-esteem.

Analysis of Domestic Research Trends Pertaining to Children of Divorced Families (이혼가정 자녀에 관한 국내 연구 동향 분석)

  • This study examined the trends of domestic academic research on children of divorced families by classifying them by period, method, target, and subject. From 2000 to 2022, 105 papers published in 58 journals were surveyed. In terms of research methods, quantitative research was conducted using questionnaires and panel data. The subjects of the reviewed studies were mainly elementary school children, and there were many studies on both divorced single mother and child families as well as divorced single father and child families. By analyzing the core subjects of the study, papers related to children's personal adaptation accounted for the largest proportion, followed by problematic behaviors, psychological difficulties, such as depression and stress, and relationships. In conclusion, due to the high divorce rate in Korea there is a need to focus academic attention on the children of divorced families. To this end, it is necessary to study the adaptation and protection factors of the children of divorced families. More qualitative research should be conducted on children of divorced families of various ages, not just elementary school students.

THE INFLUENCE OF FAMILY ENVIRONMENT AND MORAL DEVELOPMENT TO CONDUCT DISORDER IN ADOLESCENTS (청소년의 가정환경과 도덕발달단계가 행동장애에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to know the influence of familial environment and moral development on conduct disorder. Subjects were composed of 47 male and female patients with conduct disorder(patients group), 113 general male and female students(normal group), and 173 juvenile prisoners(JP group). The Korean Form of the Family Environment Scale(FES) was used to assess the family environment of the subjects and the Korean Defining Issues Test(DIT) was used to assess the moral development. Conduct disorder was diagnosed with the DSM-III-R criteria for conduct disorder. The influence of familial environment and moral development on conduct disorder was analyzed with ANOVA and the differences among groups were verified with Scheffe test. There was no difference in the socioeconomic status and the physical abuse by the parents among the three groups. But the rates of divorce or separation of the parents were significantly highest in the JP group and higher in the patients group than in the normal group. Especially the subjects of the JP group experienced the divorce or separation of their parents during the preschool or the elementary school periods. In regard to the family environment, there was no difference among the three groups in the Subscales of Expressiveness, Independence, Intellectual-cultural orientation, Moral-religious emphasis, Organization, and Control. ‘Cohesion Subscale’ was significantly higher in the normal group than in the JP group. ‘Conflict Subscale’ was significantly higher in the JP and patients groups than in the normal group. ‘Achievement orientation Subscale’ was significantly lower in the JP group than in the patients and normal groups. ‘Activerecreational orientation’ was significantly lower in the normal group than in the JP and patients groups. In gegard to the moral developmental stage, the lower moral developmental step was higher in the JP and patients groups than in the normal group. The higher steps were significantly higher in the normal group than in the JP group. There was no significant correlation between the degree of ‘Moral-religious emphasis Subscale’ and the moral development. The clinical implication and limitation of present study were listed and discussed.

Perceptions of Parenting, Peer Relationship and Depression of Adolescents from Divorced and Non-divorced Family (부모의 이혼여부에 따른 청소년의 우울지각 : 청소년이 지각한 부모의 양육태도와 교우관계를 중심으로)

  • This study was to investigate differences in depression, parenting, and peer relationship perceived by adolescents from divorced and non-divorced families. Also, aim that identifies variables which have influences on adolescents' depression. The subjects were 356 middle and high school students who live in Seoul and Incheon. All respondents answered by self-report questionnaire. Data were analyzed by t-test and hierarchical regression. The major findings were as follows. First, adolescents from divorced families perceived more depression than those from non-divorced families. Second, adolescents from divorced families perceived parenting attitude less warm than those from non-divorced families. Third, adolescents from divorced families perceived themselves more isolated and less understood in their peer relationships than those from non-divorced families did. Finally, adolescents from divorced families who feel less isolated and perceive parenting attitude more warm and less maturity-demanding perceived less depression.

The Effects of an Integrated Group Therapy Program on the Social Adjustment of Divorced Families (이혼 가정의 아동과 어머니의 사회적응을 위한 통합적 집단치료의 효과성 연구)

  • This study aimed to evaluate Comprehensive Croup Therapy Program developed for children and mothers of divorced families. The research questions were to determine first, any differences between program participants and non-participant in the areas of life wellbeing, attitude towards divorce, self-esteem, and communication skills as a result of this program; and second the durability of these effects three months after implementation of the program. The subjects of this study were 41 children and 14 mothers of the divorced families. Among them, 18 children and 6 mothers, including 5 mother-child dyads were assigned to experimental group, while 23 children and 8 mothers, including 8 mother-child dyads, to control group. Both groups received pre-and post-test evaluation but experimental group additionally received a follow-up test. The data were analyzed by t-test, Mann-Whitney U Test, Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks Test and qualitative analysis. The results showed that therapy Program enhanced the life wellbeing of both child and mother participants significantly, and this effect lasted for at least for three months after the termination of the program. Second, though the effects were not statistically significant, child and mother participants' attitude towards divorce, self-esteem, and communication skills between mother and child changed positively after the program and these effects lasted for over three months.

The Study on the Application for Christian Education by Nashim, Jewish Mishna (유대교 미쉬나 나쉼(Nashim)의 기독교교육을 위한 적용 방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the origins and texts of Judaism Mishnah Nashim, to think from the educational theological perspective, to suggest a method to be applied to Christian education, and to analyze human rights issues in relation to women's marriage life. To achieve the goal of this study is first, to analyze the historical process up to the compilation of Mishna Nashim in order to analyze the origin and text of Mishna Nashim, and then, the seven Masekcotts were analyzed from the perspective of the researcher by dividing them into marriage-related civil law, divorce-related civil law, engagement-related civil law, adultery-related civil law, and vow and pledges related civil law in order to analyze the content of the text of Mishna Nashim. Second, in order to analyze Mishna Nashim in educational theology, marriage laws were analyzed by dividing them into brother-in-law marriage system, chastity system of marriage, divorce law, engagement law, adultery law, and vow and pledge law. Third, to apply Mishna Nashim to Christian education, marriage life education were divided into marriage education and divorce education, vow education and pledge education. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, marriage education is necessary to establish a Christian family. Second, Divorce prevention education is necessary from the Christian point of view. Third, a spiritually healthy vow education must be conducted. Fourth, healthy pledge education is necessary to live as true Christians. As a result, Korean society still has a deep sense of patriarchal authority, and gender equality is still lagging behind. Discrimination, disparagement, taboos for divorce and remarriage, and stereotypes about gender roles of women still exist within the church, therefore, Christianity must provide an alternative solutions solutions.
