In a functionally graded materials(FGM), two constituent material particles are mixed up according to a specific volume fraction distribution so that its thermoelastic behavior is definitely characterized by such a material composition distribution. Therefore, the designer should determine the most suitable volume fraction distribution in order to design a FGM that optimally meets the desired performance against the given constraints. In this paper, we address a numerical optimization procedure, with employing interior penalty function method(IPFM) and FDM, for optimizing 2D volume fractions of heat-resisting FGMs composed of metal and ceramic. We discretize a FGM domain into finite number of homogenized rectangular cells of single design variable in order for the optimization efficiency. However, after the optimization process, we interpolate the discontinuous volume fraction with globally continuous bilinear function in order to enforce the continuity of volume fraction distributions.

Herein, we have fabricated an ultrathin aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) coated PP separator by using a RF sputter deposition process. Approximately 20 nm thickness coating layer on the bare PP separator was formed at the power of 55 W for 2 minutes without thermal damage. Whereas only permeability of the coated separator was degraded slightly, other properties such as thermal stability, uptake amount of liquid electrolyte, and ionic conductivity were improved comparing to the bare PP separator. As a result, an only 20-nm-thick $Al_2O_3$ coating layer could improve the rate capability compared with a bare PP separator under a high current density.
Dollar spot, caused by Sclerotinia homoeocarpa F.T. Bennett, is the most economically important turfgrass disease on golf courses in North America due to its persistent nature. Fungicides, plant growth regulators, and other products were evaluated for preventative control of dollar spot and the secondary effects on brown patch and Pythium in a mixed stand of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass golf course putting green. Most fungicides provided excellent control of dollar spot throughout the trial but Rhapsody alone did not provide adequate control. Civitas applied alone and tank-mixed with Banner MAXX(R) and Daconil Ultrex(R) provided acceptable control throughout the study. No phytotoxicity was observed on any of the treatments applied but a darker green color and reduction in turfgrass growth was observed in a treatment with plant growth regulator, Trimmit. Treatments that contained Civitas and the Civitas Harmonizer also exhibited green pigmentation.
A dynamic self-consistent method previously proposed and validated for the composites containing spherical inclusions is applied to the simplest two dimensional problems : SH wave propagation in unidirectional fiber reinforced composites. The self-consistent conditions for SH wave are derived without limitation on frequency and the wave speed and coherent attenuation are calculated for two composites. THe results of the present theory are compared with those of the multiple scattering theories and another self-consistent theory. At low volume fractions, the present theoretical results coincide with those of the multiple scattering theory using exact pair-correlation function, whereas the results based on another self-consistent theory deviate markedly from the others. As the volume fraction increases, the three theories give different results although they have qualitatively similar trends. The present theoretical results for composites considered in this paper exhibit less dispersion and physically realizable attenuation. An important observation is that the multiple scattering theory predicts vanishingly small attenuation at low frequency with volume fraction is high.
As large underground projects such as radioactive waste disposal, hot water and heat storage, and geothermal energy become influential, the study, which consider all aspects of thermics, hydraulics and mechanics would be needed. Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical coupling analysis is one of the most complex numerical technique because it should be implemented with the combined three governing equations to analyze the behavior of rock mass. In this study, finite element code, which is based on Biot's consolidation theory, was developed to analyze the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling in continuum rock mass. To verify the implemented program, one-dimensional consolidation model under the isothermal and non-isothermal conditions was analyzed and was compared with the analytic solution. The parametric study on two-dimensional consolidation was also performed and the effects of several factors such as poisson's ratio and hydraulic anisotropy on rock mass behavior were investigated. In the future, this program would be revised to be used for analysis of general discontinuous media with incorporating discrete joint model.

Wheel for passenger car support the car weight with tires, and they transmit rolling and braking power into the ground. Whittling away at wheel weight is more effective to boost fuel economy than lighting vehicle body structure. A shape of hole in disk is optimized for minimizing the weight of steel wheel. Pro/ENGINEER program is used for formulating the design model, and ANSYS package is selected for analyzing the design model. It has difficulties to interface these commercial software directly. For Combining both programs, response surface methodology is applied to construct approximation functions for maximum stresses and maximum displacements are obtained by full factorial design of five levels. This steel wheel is modeled in 14-inch diameter of rim, and wide parameter of hole in disk is only selected as design variable for reducing the weight of steel whee. PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) algorithm, which used the second-order information in the direction finding problem and uses the active set strategy, is used for solving optimization problems.

High-voltage operation of the lithium ion battery is one of the advantageous approaches to obtain high energy capacity without changing the conventional cell components and structure. However, operating at harsh condition inevitably results in severe side reactions at the electrode surface and structural disintegration of active material particles. Herein we coated layers composed of $Al_2O_3$ and ZnO on the electrode based on NCM using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Thicker layers of novel Al-doped ZnO (AZO) coating compared to conventional ALD coated layers are prepared. Cathode based on NCM with the varying AZO coating thickness are fabricated and used for coin cell assembly. Effect of ALD coating thickness on the charge-discharge cycle behavior obtained at high-voltage operation was investigated.

In this paper, we propose a VLSI structure of real-time image compression and reconstruction processor using 2-D discrete wavelet transform and implement into a hardware which use minimal hardware resource using ASIC library. In the implemented hardware, Data path part consists of the DWT kernel for the wavelet transform and inverse transform, quantizer/dequantizer, the huffman encoder/huffman decoder, the adder/buffer for the inverse wavelet transform, and the interface modules for input/output. Control part consists of the programming register, the controller which decodes the instructions and generates the control signals, and the status register for indicating the internal state into the external of circuit. According to the programming condition, the designed circuit has the various selective output formats which are wavelet coefficient, quantization coefficient or index, and Huffman code in image compression mode, and Huffman decoding result, reconstructed quantization coefficient, and reconstructed wavelet coefficient in image reconstructed mode. The programming register has 16 stages and one instruction can be used for a horizontal(or vertical) filtering in a level. Since each register automatically operated in the right order, 4-level discrete wavelet transform can be executed by a programming. We synthesized the designed circuit with synthesis library of Hynix 0.35um CMOS fabrication using the synthesis tool, Synopsys and extracted the gate-level netlist. From the netlist, timing information was extracted using Vela tool. We executed the timing simulation with the extracted netlist and timing information using NC-Verilog tool. Also PNR and layout process was executed using Apollo tool. The Implemented hardware has about 50,000 gate sizes and stably operates in 80MHz clock frequency.
The Precambrian granite, and the Yuli group and the Hyeondong gneisss complex are studied to unravel the metamorphic history of the northeastern Sobaeksan massif. The Hongjesa granite, emplaced at 650-$700^{\circ}C$ and $3{\pm}1$ kbar, has been altered at 310-$568^{\circ}C$. Not only the chloritization of biotite but also the sericitization and saussuritization of plagioclase occur at the subsolidus stage. Biotites of the Hongjesa granite vary in their Al, Fe and Mg contents through dioctahedral and tschermakitic substitutions during the subsolidus stage. Secondary muscovites from biotite and feldspars are enriched in their Si and Mg+Fe contents through tschermakitic and trictahedral substitutuions. The metamorphic pressures and temperatures estimated from the Hyeondong gneiss complex are 3.6-6.6 kbar and 593-$718^{\circ}C$, respectively. Local migmatization producing the cordierite-bearing assemblage occurs in the Hyeondong gneiss complex. The Gibbs' method applied to the assemblage of garnet+biotite+plagioclase+quartz in banded gneiss suggests a complex P-T history of the Hyeondong gneiss complex.

The International Maritime Organization has steadily strengthened environmental regulations on nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide emitted from marine vessels. Consequently, the demand for electric propulsion vessels based on eco-friendly elements has increased. To this end, research and development has been steadily conducted for various vessels. In electric propulsion systems, a redundancy configuration is typically adopted to increase reliability and facilitate the onboard arrangement. Furthermore, studies have been actively conducted to ensure the safety of electric propulsion systems through the combination with digital twin technology. A digital twin can be used to predict outcomes in advance by implementing real-world equipment or space in a virtual world like twins, integrating real-world information and data with the virtual world, and performing computer simulations of situations that can occur in a real environment. In this study, we perform failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) to validate the electric power management system (PMS) redundancy scheme for the digital twin technology development of electric propulsion vessels. Then, we propose the role and algorithm of PMS as a compensation function for preventing primary and secondary damages caused by a single equipment failure of the PMS and preventing additional damages by analyzing the impact on the entire system under real vessel operating conditions based on the redundancy FMEA suggested for the ship classification and certification. We verified the improvement in propulsion conservation through tests.
