The Effect of Resiliency Training Program for Child Protection Agency Counselors to Prevent Secondary Traumatic Stress (아동보호전문기관 상담원을 대상으로 한 이차외상스트레스 예방을 위한 레질리언스 훈련 프로그램의 효과 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to find out the effect of the secondary traumatic stress prevention program for counselors at child protection agencies. The quasi-experiment design was used for pre-test, post-test, and for follow-up test, performed 3 months after the program. Experimental group consisted of 9 counselors, while the comparison group consisted of 10 counselors. As a result, it was revealed that secondary traumatic stress prevention program was effective in decreasing the secondary traumatic stress and depression of the counselors, and also effective in increasing stress coping even though it was not statistically significant. Follow-up test did not present statistically significant changes in secondary traumatic stress, depression, and stress coping. It was found that, to achieve continued effect of the program, much longer and sustained program is required. Based on these findings, the necessity and application of the secondary traumatic stress prevention program were suggested.

A Qualitative Study on the Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress Experience of Social Workers who Worked in Trauma Centers (트라우마 센터에서 근무한 사회복지사의 소진과 이차적 외상 스트레스 경험에 관한 질적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a substantive theory that understand the burnout and secondary traumatic stress experience of social workers who worked in the trauma centers. This research was conducted by Grounded Theory. The result is as follow: In the initial coding, 159 units of mean, 47 subcategories, and 12 main categories. The central phenomenon of the initial coding was 'the wounded existence.' In the focused coding, the core category was 'seeking to recover professional identity as a social worker.' In the theoretical coding, the burnout and secondary traumatic stress experience of social workers who worked in the trauma centers were classified as four phases;'Commitment to the mission', 'Conflict', 'Stagnant' and 'Disruption'. Based on the findings, the preparation for the disaster social work practice, the perspective on "social healing" of trauma, and the necessity of the mandatory policy or intervention for social workers self-care were discussed.

Effect of Resilience and Positive psychological Capital on the Professional Quality of Life in Hospital Nurses (병원간호사의 극복력과 긍정심리자본이 전문직 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to identify the effect of resilience and positive psychological capital on hospital nurses' professional quality of life. A cross-sectional survey design was utilized to investigate 221 general hospital nurses from June 1 to 30, 2021. Professional quality of life (ProQOL), which is conceptualized with three sub-dimensions (compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress), resilience, and positive psychological capital variables were measured. There was a positive relationship between compassion satisfaction and resilience, positive psychological capital, and a negative relationship among burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and the other variables in this study. The main factors influencing compassion satisfaction were resilience, and positive psychological capital, which explained about 47% of compassion satisfaction. Burnout was influenced by resilience, positive psychological capital, and work pattern, and these variables explained about 37% of burnout. Notably, it was found that resilience was the most crucial factor in nurses' compassion satisfaction, and positive psychological capital was the most crucial factor in nurses' burnout. Thus, it is suggested to develop and verify the effectiveness of a resilience improvement program and positive psychological intervention program to strengthen the internal resources of hospital nurses.
