  • The pumping test analysis on 28 pumping test data in Duksan hot-spring area was performed using the fractal model, the leaky fractal model, and the steady-state dual-porosity fractal model. The fractional flow dimension 1.9 or 2.0 was determined in the central put of the hot spring and the fractional flow dimension 1.5-1.7 in the marginal area. For the flow dimension 2.0, the correlation between the transmissivity and the productivity index by the aquifer loss was much better than that between the transmissivity and the specific yield by the total drawdown. On the other hand, for the flow dimension 1.9, the correlation between the generalized transmissivity and the productivity index was very similar to that between the generalized transmissivity and the specific yield.

  • The second phase of low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW) disposal facility is under planned on the sedimentary rock in unsaturated zone. In this study, we created two meshes which were a matrix continuum mesh and a fracture continuum mesh to carry out 2 dimensional numerical modeling for groundwater flow in the unsaturated zone containing fractures focused on the second phase of LILW disposal facility. Two continuum meshes were developed using MINC in meshmaker module of TOUGH2 code. A fracture continuum mesh was included the k-field distribution of the permeability derived from the Discrete Fractured Network (DFN) modeling. To apply the unsaturated zone for the modeling, the gridding steps to generate mesh were developed. Each step to generate a mesh consisted of definition of materials, setting the initial conditions and creating grids using MINC. The methodology development of meshes in this study will be applied for more precise modeling of groundwater flow and mass transport.

  • The process of double coating consists of bottom coating using relatively coaser pigments to improve characteristics of base paper and top coating using finer pigments to cover unevenness of the bottom coating and to give various function of the coated paper. The structure of precoating is influenced not only by its components, but also characteristics of base paper, Moreover pore size and its size distribution of precoating are expected to influence the top coating properties, but this is not well understood. Coating and printing operations involve the application of pigmented fluid on top of a porous substrate. The porosity of the substrate has been shown to influence the properties of the coating, but a good understanding of the mechanisms is lacking in the literature. The role of pore size and void volume on top coating structure is unclear.

  • Acid/Base buffer capacity of soil is very important in prediction of contaminant transport for its direct impact on pH change of the system composed of soil-contaminant-water, In this research, diffuse double layer theory as well as two layer electrostatic adsorption model are applied to develop a theoretical model of buffer capacity of soil. Model application procedures are presented as well. Buffer capacity of Georgia kaolinite and Milwhite kaolinite was measured by acid-base titration. Model prediction and experimental results are compared.

  • In this study, monodispersive silica nanoparticles with double mesoporous shells were synthesized, and the pore size of synthetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles was controlled. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), N, N-dimethylbenzene, and decane were used as soft template and induced to form outer mesoporous shell. The resultant double mesoporous silica nanoparticles were consisted of two layers of shells having different pore sizes, and it has been confirmed that outer shells with larger pores (Mean pore size > 2.5 nm) are formed directly on the surface of the smaller pore sized shell (Mean pore size < 2.5 nm). It was confirmed that the regulation of the molar ratio of pore expansion agents plays a key role in determining the pore size of double mesoporous shells.

  • In recent years, traditional scaffold fabrication techniques such as gas foaming, salt leaching, sponge replica, and freeze casting in tissue engineering have significantly limited sufficient mechanical property and cell interaction effect due to only random pores. Fused deposition modeling is the most apposite technology for fabricating the 3D scaffolds using the polymeric materials in tissue engineering application. In this study, 3D slurry mould was fabricated with a blended biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP)/Silica/Alginic acid sodium salt slurry in PCL mould and heated for two hours at $100^{\circ}C$ to harden the blended slurry. 3D dual-pore BCP/Silica scaffold, composed of macro pores interconnected with micro pores, was successfully fabricated by sintering at furnace of $1100^{\circ}C$. Surface morphology and 3D shape of dual-pore BCP/Silica scaffold from scanning electron microscopy were observed. Also, the mechanical properties of 3D BCP/Silica scaffold, according to blending ratio of alginic acid sodium salt, were evaluated through compression test.

  • Marine concrete structure is exposed to salt injury and deteriorated by steel corrosion due to chloride ions diffusion. It, therefore, is very important to estimate the chloride diffusivity in concrete. In this paper the compressive strength and permeable pore volume of concrete are measured and the diffusion coefficient and penetration depth of chloride ions in concrete were investigated to estimate the chloride diffusivity efficiently. To correlate these results each other, regression analysis was done. The results showed a good linear relation between chloride diffusivity and the fundamental properties of concrete and the chloride diffusivity of concrete with water-cement ratios of $40%{\sim}60%$ were about $2.5{\sim}6.6{\times}10^{-12}m^2/s$.

  • This study aims to investigate hydrogeological properties of the central area from Yangjeong-Dong to Sujeong-Dong in Busan Metropolitan City. For this study, pumping tests were carried out in the bedrock aquifer of Yangjeong-Dong and the unconsolidated aquifer near Busanjin railway station. The pumping test in the bedrock aquifer containing the Dongrae fault revealed specific hydraulic characteristics with respect to the fault. The pumping test in the unconsolidated aquifer revealed the hydrogeologic properties of both coastal landfill and fine sediments. It was found that the Moench's sphere-shaped dual-porosity model fits the bedrock aquifer, whereas the Neuman's uncofined aquifer model accords with the unconsolidated aquifer. The average transmissivity and storage coefficient of the bedrock aquifer are $2.75{\times}10^{-5}m^2/s\;and\;6.41{\times}10^{-5}$ and those of the unconsolidated aquifer are $8.24{\times}10^{-4}m^2/s\;and\;3.70{\times}10^{-3}$, respectively. On the other hand, slug tests gave average transmissivity and storage coefficient values of $9.84{\times}10^{-4}m^2/s\;and\;1.21{\times}10^{-2}$, respectively.

  • Subcritical crack growth is one of the main causes of time-dependent fracturing in rock. In the present study, we investigated subcritical crack growth in rock in distilled water (pH = 5.7) and in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOHaq, pH = 12), comparing the results to those in air. We also investigated the effect of the pH in an aqueous environment. We used andesite and granite for all our tests. We determined the relationship between the crack velocity and the stress intensity factor using the double-torsion test under conditions of controlled temperature. We showed that crack velocities in water were higher than those in air, in agreement with other research results indicating that crack velocity increases in water. When we compared our results for NaOHaq with those for water, however, we found that the crack velocity at the same stress intensity factor did not change even though the pH of the surrounding environment was different. This result does not agree with the accepted understanding that hydroxide ions accelerate subcritical crack growth in rocks. We concluded that the pH at the crack tip influences subcritical crack growth, and not the bulk pH, which has little effect.

  • To evaluate the $CO_2$ storage capacity for the reservoir rock, the laboratory scale technique to measure the amount of $scCO_2$, replacing pore water of the reservior rock after the $CO_2$ injection was developed in this study. Laboratory experiments were performed to measure the $scCO_2$ displacement efficiency of the conglomerate and the sandstone in Janggi basin, which are classified as available $CO_2$ storage rocks in Korea. The high pressurized stainless steel cell containing two different walls was designed and undisturbed rock cores acquired from the deep drilling site around Janggi basin were used for the experiments. From the lab experiments, the average $scCO_2$ displacement efficiency of the conglomerate and the sandstone in Janggi basin was measured at 31.2% and 14.4%, respectively, which can be used to evaluate the feasibility of the Janggi basin as a $scCO_2$ storage site in Korea. Assuming that the effective radius of the $CO_2$ storage formations is 250 m and the average thickness of the conglomerate and the sandstone formation under 800 m in depth is 50 m each (from data of the drilling profile and the geophysical survey), the $scCO_2$ storage capacity of the reservoir rocks around the probable $scCO_2$ injection site in Janggi basin was calculated at 264,592 metric ton, demonstrating that the conglomerate and the sandstone formations in Janggi basin have a great potential for use as a pilot scale test site for the $CO_2$ storage in Korea.
